TURBOFURNACE: IDOL OF MOTOR

TURBOFURNACE fires again for the first time since 2018. All it took was buying a machine shop and two-and-a-half hard years of relentless, painful obsession.
Next steps: cut the umbilical cord to shore power and take it on tour; make it into a trike and drive it around.
Hail MOTOR.
Notes:
- We are injecting garden hose water into the top of the burn chamber with a 120 degree, 1/4" NPT misting nozzle.
- Despite the water injection, turbine inlet temperatures are still excessive.
- Yes, I'm wearing socks and loafers. I didn't expect it to work, and sadly didn't dress for the occasion.
- Yes, it's mild steel, not stainless. It's a prototype, deal with it.
- Safety third?

The same mistake everyone makes, don’t try to throttle it by a pre-intake throttle body, all you are doing is creating a huge vacuum which will suck oil through the seals. Instead use an external waste gate to throttle by providing bypass air, you will keep temps down, lean it out and actually have something that’s self responsive and provides a natural negative feedback
@brucebaxter6923

Or restrict the exhaust.
@ttv8ra23
@ttv8ra23 2 года назад
Great theory. Could you vent it between the compressor side of the turbo and the combustion chamber? Would that be effective? Would just be a lot easier to setup than a wastegate between the chamber and turbo. I suppose a wastegate could be used then a compressed air source and a regulator to control how much pressure the wastegate sees to get it to open when you want. Mmmmm so many ideas. I’m trying to do as much research as I can as I intend to build one very similar with a larger turbo and heavier wall furnace and cyclone. I have a heat exchanger to cool the the lubricating oil. I want one that I can start up and run a couple of times a month when having beers with friends. A novelty thing that is somewhat reliable.
@brucebaxter6923
@brucebaxter6923 2 года назад
@@ttv8ra23 Waste gate keeps feeding air into the fire. Blowoff valve venting keeps the speed down but the exhaust temps go up. Blowoff valve dumping in before the exhaust wheel both slows the speed, limits the pressure and cools the exhaust. Main problem is solids into the exhaust wheel.

@@brucebaxter6923 thanks for the reply. I’m pretty set on a wastegate between the combustion chamber/cyclone and the turbo. Will definitely run a cyclone like these guys. Will keep it alive for a lot longer. I’ll build it all a bit heavier though. 6mm wall thickness atleast.

@@ttv8ra23 I think your going to need a massive waste gate. Check the channel Bobby Mcboost, he has a few videos building something similar, he basically had a T3 flange sized waste gate and it wasn't big enough to throttle the massive turbo he was using.

You are doing things that none of the other channels are and they are highlighted in this video. Love the behind the scenes progression of your development and the energy of the team. Keep going! There is definitely a future to what you are doing. Get some patents rolling for your designs. Can I send you a pm to discuss some ideas in private? Thanks! Because our throttle body is in front of our turbo, we can control the boost pressure with that, so we don't plan on adding blow off valve at this time. Next steps are getting it so we don't need garden hose or electricity to start or run it.

Been watching for a few months now and love the projects. would i be dumb to suggest you pre heat the water, and befor you say "then it won't have a cooling affect"(so the turbo doseint melt/damaged) if you heated the water by the system like raping a copper pipe around the chamber/or filter you use the other-wise wasted heet and make it easier to tern into steam, so its more efishint when running.
@bvanderveen
@bvanderveen 3 года назад
I think you have a pretty good idea! I had considered actually making a full water jacket but was worried the cooling might be too much, but seeing how much excess heat we have, I'm reconsidering it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just found this video. It’s answered a lot of my questions that I put on your other video thank you. Still one though. What are you controlling with the 1/2 valve in your left hand? Are you feeding water into the combustion chamber to create steam? Adding to the energy created and cooling at the same time?

@hackbyte
@hackbyte 2 года назад
Maybe, you need a afterburner stage? for short; seeing flames outside the main combustion chamber is always a sign of lost energy ... it might look pretty, but it will just puff out into open air... So .. from the fire box/container on .. maybe consider to feed the hot air for some inces along .. then mix air from a tiny fraction from the compressed air side in and maybe using a spark plug make sure that all the gasses with the tiny part of fresh air gets combusted too .. further expanding your exhaust gasses.... Then let them flow along and back into the turbo.... Which will now get cleaner and depending on the way from the fire box, even cooler air to work with..... Just an idea..... hf ;)
@survantjames
@survantjames 2 года назад
Correct you are. The exhaust gasses are definitely rich. A lot of possible mitigations have been discussed.
@chasbader
@chasbader 2 года назад
The problem with wood (or coal) is that combustion is a 2 stage process. Early there is pyrolization of the wood to various hydrocarbons which create the smoke which you see. After all the hydrocarbons are gone you are left with almost pure carbon (coke/charcoal)... The smoke from this will be clear regardless of combustion efficiency. This is why the smoke clears up near the end. The way around this can be found in the Solo stove or the smaller Huhu which I recently purchased for $21 and absolutely love. Preheated excess secondary combustion air is the solution. Gotta design the combustion chamber to effect this. Also, 2 air control valves- one for primary and one for secondary would nail it for sure.

It’s the fact that we are running the throttle body valve at 10% open that’s limiting the boost. This is to limit the EGTs to a sane level. A future model will have other means of limiting EGTs and allowing higher pressures.
@ttv8ra23
@ttv8ra23 2 года назад
@@survantjames ah limiting egts with the throttle is a great idea. Could the same thing be achieved with a throttle body T’d into the charge pipe. Ok, so, what are you guys trying to accomplish here? Why do you feel you needed the cyclone? You need steam power to make this really have some power. Then hook up a generator. This is a good idea. Now, be aware of your worst nightmare.......FEMALE ENGINEERS. They think different than men do. Men miss the obvious, where women take advantage of it. A group of female engineers will build a better one, faster. I am a retired machine shop owner that had female machinests . They did a better job than the men. Eventually I had two guys, and five women in the shop. So, look out.....🤠
