The presence of thatch on the lawn can be related to several factors, including
mowing with a robotic mower ;
mulching;
a soil that is poor in micro-organisms;
sandy or heavy soil;
certain grass species that produce more lignin than others;
pesticides that limit the presence of earthworms, which usually help in the decomposition process;
over-use of fertiliser: this can lead to acidification of the soil, or an increase in the amount of lignin;
over-watering.
My advice for successful dethatching:
treat selectively 2 weeks before (beware of phyto products banned for individuals since 1 January 2019).
Give preference to manual removal of undesirable annual poa, quackgrass, etc. ( cause of the many visible holes in my lawn )
cut off the watering the day before (the lawn must be dry but the soil slightly damp),
mow the lawn shorter, at about 25 mm,
mark the sprinklers and solenoid valves with markers,
collect the waste after dethatching, the soil must remain clean.
De-thatching consists of removing the "thatch" in order to thicken the grass and encourage its growth and density.
Thatch is an accumulation of more or less decomposed organic matter on the surface.
This organic layer is made up of leaves, stems and roots of decomposing grass.
The objectives of dethatching:
-To increase the amount of oxygen, water, fertiliser and lime available
-Eliminate a large percentage of diseased plants and undesirable grasses (annual bluegrass, foxtail, crabgrass, etc.),
-to give the lawn vigour, which will become denser (tillering) and develop its roots,
-combat diseases and mosses
The frequency can be from one to two dethatching operations per year depending on the grass species and the soil. This should be done in spring and autumn.
A little tip for collecting waste: use the rotary mower as a "hoover".
