This video is a brief introduction to turf surface cultivation tools, with residential users in mind. This does not show the turf machines used but rather the the accessory reels that would be inserted into the machines themselves. Naturally, this is what matters most. These tools form part of the inventory needed to complete some cultural practices, predominantly for the surface portion of the processes. And, they are focus around thatch control. Core aeration is also considered a thatch control process but is not included in this video. The items show In this video are:
Pin-type scarifying reel
Blade-type scarifying reel
Verticut reel
Blade-type grooming reel
Spring-tine grooming or scarifying reel(depicted)
Nylon sweeper or turf brush or turf grooming brush

I’ve been trying to purchase a verticutter but cannot find a machine in the United States. Only a cartridge for Allett brand mowers but I don’t own that mower. Anyone know where I can procure a verticutter machine?

I think that Protea machines has moved into Canada but I’m not sure if the US yet. Might be worth finding that distributor and see what’s possible. I’ll try get their contact details as well

I planned to get the vids done much sooner but haven’t come up with the budget to do it yet. Hopefully soon. The Aussies Lawn has a unit with the scarifier blade so you can also check out his content

This is so useful thank you. There is too much confusion over scarifying which is often annual or bi annual and renovation based and verticutting which if done regularly will avoid the need for scarifying and maintain lawn health and looks throughtout the season. Well done

Howzit, and thanks for watching! I planned to purchase all the attachments but haven’t come up with the moola yet. So in future, I will have videos made on each of the different reels for the SVG500. The pin-type is usually used on cricket pitches and bowling greens for specific tasks. It can be incredibly aggressive as well as super gentle if it’s used to just tease the surface of very fine turf. I’m talking sub 6mm. For most residential applications, you pretty much never need more than the scarifier, verticut or grooming reels. The grooming reel will be used most often, and the other two less often and for certain applications. I must say, I don’t know anyone who’s tested the pin-type on RU-vid before but I’ll chat to Protea and see if they have some content I could use.

I must say, but what you’ll use first and most often. For me it’s the blade-type grooming reel and the verticut. If your thatch is mostly in order then you only need to maintain. The scarifiers are for problems and really dense thatch situations
