I had a group of Jakes around me all morning once. They would just hang out and answer to everything. They finally left and figured I'd just try a fighting purr because I figured I had nothing to lose. I was curious to see if it really worked and how birds would react. Well I did the fighting purr on a mouth call and they literally came running. The lead jake came within 4 yards of me and gobbled. That was a great experience. I didn't shoot the jakes but learned a lot.

Had a very similar experience... It was a Jake as well... Came to the fighting purr... I got very aggressive on a mouth call... I shot him at 30 yards near my decoys... Prior to the fighting purr, I could tell he was leaving... I called and shut up... waited awhile and gave a soft yelp... he came running in...

Last season I had a group of birds hung up about 100 yards away and just out of sight. I heard them purring aggressively and carrying on and running around, but they did not care one bit about all my yelps, purrs, and clucks. So after listening to them bicker for about 15 minutes after flydown I hit a fighting purr on my mouth all and they walked straight up to 15 yards. I found out they were all jakes so I let them walk away, but it was a great learning experience for me.

About 5 Springs back in New York- this Gobbler walked away from my Sweet Hen Yelps and walked down a Rocky High Line. He got a 1/4 mile away and,I pulled out a Traditional Slate Pot and hit it with the sounds of 2 Gobblers fighting. He came back that 1/4 mile quick. I was hiding behind a huge boulder. He was Gobbling no more then 15 yards on the other side and,I continued the Fighting Purrs. I just stepped out and showed myself. He stopped Gobbling and stood still- no putts. Easy shot! Shouldered the Shotgun and he stayed right there.

I have used the fighting purr the last couple of seasons with good results, but as Matt said there is a time to use them and a time not to. If I am hearing more than one gobbler, that's when I tend to use it, because I am assuming there is a dominate tom in that group. You will find if you do use this call at times, wary lone jakes coming in silently. Make sure you yelp after a the fighting call, it tends to really fire up a tom if he is dominate.

I still have my original knight and hale glass fighting purr calls from the late 80s. My most memorable hunt was when I had a turkey at 8:30 am answering me from across a small farm field. Gobbling at everything. Came through the tree edge out of sight and wound not come any closer. I sat there for 45 minutes and ate my sandwich being silent. At 10 minutes before noon which was quitting time here in pa. I gave him the fighting purr. 2 minutes later I saw his blue and white head coming up the logging road and got him at 25 yds. 11.5 main beard and 4 smaller ones. But spurs were only 7/8. He’s on my wall still. This was around 1990. Had pretty good success with them then but not so much anymore for some reason.

That's right. Same thing with Cutting. Not as effective on the heavily hunted public. Fighting Purrs + cutting still work. I think the increasing numbers of Mountain Bikers on Public starting at Dawn has something to do with it.

Hey Matt, I heard you say that you use to be in Missouri. Did you move back to Virginia? I'm a homegrown Virginian (Va. Beach) and knew your are from the south west area of Virginia. Thanks for all the lessons I definitely appreciate you sharing. Good luck this season. Mike.

@@maxstambaugh yes, that was a not a good fighting purr, and I have yet to hear that call sound good. I’m not trying to be disrespectful in any way, just being honest, and maybe it is a good sounding call, but haven’t heard it yet. Sorry

@ericbaker2023
@ericbaker2023 2 года назад
@@maxstambaugh Custom calls from Pat Strawser, High Class calls, David Holloran, Cody, Primos, etc.. But you’re missing my point; I don’t know if this call is good or not, maybe it is, but I’d need to hear the right person run it. Again, I’m not trying to be disrespectful (someone will accuse me of that soon), my only point is I haven’t heard anything on this channel that would convince me to buy that call.
