The siren recorded in this video is located at Saga Bay Park in Cutler Bay, FL. During the test, the siren broadcasts quiet and distorted voice messages along with two short alerts at 4:10 and 10:11. For an unknown reason the voice messages seemed noticeably shorter this quarter. This siren utilizes the older style rotator likely making this siren a WS-3016 and one of the oldest sirens in the system. The rotator is much louder than the newer units and can be audibly heard throughout the video. I also decided to include two camera angles during the test, feel free to tell me what your opinions are.

@@samschannel531 Here you go. 1. The model is still in production and parts are present. 2. Federal Signal products produce objectively-better voice intelligibility. 3. Federal Signal is a larger company and support networks are likely better as a result. 4. The construction of the Modulator is more hurricane resistant. 5. Many could also argue that the system-wide control products (encoders and the like) provided by Federal Signal are superior.

Gabriel Fairchild, Whelens produce much lower tones, which means the sound can carry farther. The most powerful Whelen model is 4000 watts, while Mods only go up to 3200 watts. Plus, can Federal Signal say that everything but their wire, even their screws, is made in the US?

For those who are wondering what the distorted messages said are as followed: 1st part: "This is only a test, this is shortly active. Plant System, a test". 2nd part: This was a test is active. it will begin shortly. do not seek. plant speak siren was a test (update: I was wrong. It was "this is only a test" & "this was only a test" followed by Spanish and French.

The 3016 that used to be in my neighborhood got replaced by a 4004 somewhere between 2011 and 2016.

The difference between WS and WPS series Whelens is communication. WS sirens are One-Way controllers, meaning they do not communicate back to an encoder. WPS sirens are Two-way, and can talk back to the encoder and give status updates like on/off, battery charge, rotation direction, etc.

I am aware. The rotator box type was just a means of differentiating between the different variants based off the siren head. Keep in mind the siren might have a newer control cabinet (or internal electronics) because FPL, the utility responsible for the system's maintenance, has often mismatched control cabinets and siren heads, especially with these older units.

@@jeremydunn6089 Yes, I was talking about the other controller variants before the ESC-864. It is possible this unit was originally equiped with one, as it is one of the few units that survived hurricane Andrew. Meaning it is original to the system, all the way back to when it was first installed, very likely before the present controller. The old siren head provides further evidence as stated above, other evidence includes the discoloration of cabinet pieces found on other units (meaning components were replaced with newer counterparts).

Why are the voice messages so weird? I think it might be that the siren is picking up interference from something or maybe it’s not reading the DTMF codes properly, but I may be wrong.

it uses DTMF to activate a Live PA Kinda Acting like a Radio, if you know radios they can receive interference. that's what happens here

Thanks! I used a Canon SL2 with a Rode Video Micro for the zoomed out shot and a Canon SX530 HS for the zoomed in shot.

Absolutely not I remember I was asleep and h woke up to the sirens and it freaked me out. I went downstairs and no one was home I was like that’s it I’m gonna die alone…but it was a test lol
