Stewards are humans and humans make mistakes, what's the surprise? Any touch on wheels at that speed is potentialy causing a crash.

@Atalante Alter You would think that, and that’s clearly everyone’s understanding, but that’s not what’s written in the rule book, the F1 sporting regulations (Issue 11) for 2021, which has different language for the first start and any subsequent restarts. Section 38 governs the race start procedure and this talks about what should happen if cars enter the pits on the formation lap, including lining up in order, which is why Russell was told give the places back, but I don’t think was actually relevant here. Because further down the sporting regs are two sections on standing race restarts. One on what should happen if they decide to have a standing start after a safety car period, and another on the procedures after a red flag period. In both sections, 43.1 and 51.11 , it states that if cars were on the track at the time of the red flag or safety car coming out (which they all were) then they “must return to the grid, take up their grid positions…” for the restart. No mention of being allowed to come into the pits except if you were already there previously.

@@Racengineer2 I mean most of the retirements were the result of one cascading mistake; if you closely look at Strolls onboard, it looks like the carnage in front was not visible clearly for him, and he approached the corner without keeping that in consideration while Ocon saw bottas crash right in front of him and slowed down extra; throwing strolls braking completely off as he did not correct for the accident in front at all lol

I haven't seen anyone else comment about this, and for me it was the best move of the Alonso's defense show. The way he cut the acceleration advantage of Hamilton at that moment was just brilliant, and to me, denotes how experienced and amazing Alonso is. Genius.

Nothing amazing, he just took the racing line normally and if the other car isn't already alongside there is nowhere else to go. Alonso not causing HAM to crash when he turned into HAM at high speed on the same lap is far from brilliant.

Everyone can make mistake and of course that action is not going to play in theyr favour, i don't see why we should ask for different penalty, on the other side change the engine can really be a game change and it is correct that you have to pay something for change it

They really need to make rule change for engine penalties. If someone crashes on their own or there is an issue due to reliability, then a 10 place penalty is fine. Having to replace an engine, because someone else made you crash, then no penalty should be applied. Same goes for damage to the rest of the car, caused by someone else, shouldn't be under the cost cap.

Red bull should hire mazepin to spin them all.

90% is WAAAY too much. It's 50/50 imo. Vettel was decidedly quicker in that Aston, and Ocon didn't make a single mistake. Likewise, had Alonso let Hamilton by even just 2 laps earlier, Hamilton likely would have won the race. It's a team effort, and each driver played his role to perfection.

Well, he's coming from way back. And from there, the carnage wasn't visible for him. Thus the extreme deceleration of those in front of him caught him off guard. He expected them to slow down, yes, but not that much. And as he realized, it was too late. He tried to find some space on the inside, but there wasn't enough grip to pull that off.

You don't understand. The danger was not the speed, it was that Alonso suddenly moved to the right at that speed. Had the cars touched, you would probably have seen a car flying or something. The incident with Max is different because both cars barely touched each other, and it was in a corner, therefore at a much lower speed.
