@@irietech4944 If you use a touch-screen monitor, DeX will support that input. If you mean using a phone for touch input, you'd only be able to use the phone as a trackpad/keyboard.
Can you check out some of the Aliexpress's USB to HDMI cable for android through apps like the one you already did. Because some of us cannot buy from amazon or ebay
My wife smashed the display on her s8, so I attached it to my laptops usb c dock and use it in Samsung dex mode. Managed to get all the data from it and use the banking apps to setup the banking apps on her new iPhone.
I have been doing this for 2 years now with each of my old Samsung phones... as I upgrade, I turn the old one into a portable computer using USB-C portable monitor, a folding Bluetooth keyboard and mouse pad... I like to run Kali Nethunter tools and other testing apps. I also run DeX for Windows on my laptop with USB-C to access Kali Nethunter and those same testing tools, but using my laptop's monitor and keyboard mouse pad to control.
Just wait a few more years when mid range phones specs start to match or even outperform sd855. Everything up to Will will be able to be emulated completely.
Definitely... Since an 855 can even run re6 for switch ... I am sure we would be able to play AAA pc games soon and emulate ps3 and x360 finally if the development of smartphones continues...
It was pretty interesting to see multiple apps running at the same time. It sounds like a great idea to go with, even with Phones that aren't blacklisted. I wonder if that same Dock could think of a Wired controller working the same. I'd probably end up with another setup near my main system just because, running a couple apps at once.
Would be awesome if you had a comparison every 6 months or every year, looking back at all your tests and crowning winners in different categories. Probably too much to ask, but just a suggestion.
I love Dex, I loved it more when they had a glitch one update that upped the refresh rate to 120hz. If I had known it was going to be patched out I'd have never updated. Now I'm looking for something else. The experimental desktop of android does 144hz but it doesn't work for me beyond showing up on the screen
devices are blacklisted when they are stolen and the owner calls in to their provider to have the IMEI blocked so that the thief can't sell it as a working phone. so no, it's not awesome. buying them is participating in an underground criminal economy.
@@bradleyfelix3541 Well if you don't pay for something, and don't return it, then that is sort of stealing it as well. Certainly breaking the contract, and then appropriating the device, and not returning it oer terms of the contract, without paying full value as agreed. Most laymen would term that stealing. So essentially lost or stolen devices on the blacklist. Mostly the stolen kind though. Often the lost device is reported lost, and then resold, so fraud really, but we could also call that theft. If they are on the list, then you shouldn't buy them, or encourage others to buy them either.
@@asunavk69 If you use a dock off the bat, combined with a USB mouse and keyboard, you can usse the phone's screen mirroring to work the phone. Screen mirroring is usually an automatic process, same for alternate inputs.
@@jeffg7044 the steam deck isn't just a gaming device, it's going to change personal computing. Massive graphics power in a Linux handheld touchscreen... It's like a Linux phone but a thousand times better. Maybe this doesn't sound important to some people, but for me personally the steam deck is going to replace my cell phone AND my laptop
@@arkworthy8594 it doesn't, but I am looking into mobile lte options. Lte modem, nighthawk m1, usb dongles... We'll see how to goes. If it can at least replace a laptop+tablet I'll be extremely happy because I was considering going the Apple route which would be way more costly
That's what I was thinking. These "blacklisted" phones are likely stolen. I wonder if it might be possible that they would be sold by law enforcement as unreturnable stolen property, or possibly as returned stolen property from the original theft victim, but I wouldn't think that would be very common.
Blacklisted phones are only not paid plan phones, that's why they're only sim locked. Stolen phones won't boot, and if they did, they would be able to use sim cards if unlocked
@@Hipno702 That is still theft. Selling something that you do not actually own is actually stealing. No one gets shanked, but still it is a criminal act.
@@Hipno702 True, not violent robbery, just simple larceny, which is still felony depending on the dollar amount. That can still make you accessory after the fact, or dealing in stolen goods, which are misdemeanors and/or felonies depending on the state. Odds of being arrested for it are very low, but with a hard ass prosecutor you could end up with serious time, and ruin your life. Just because it seems easy doesn't make it not a crime, and it could have serious consequences. Just a thing that should be discouraged, and not promoted.
come on man, i think you´re great and all, but promoting blacklisted phones ? you forgot to mention that they get blacklisted becuase they are lost or stolen, basically you´re telling people to buy stolen goods.
These are stolen, so a really bad idea. Likely a crime. And good way to destroy one's hard work building the channel. Bas idea to begin with. I would take this video down before RU-vid does.
Sounds great except for the buying a blacklisted phone thing. Blacklisted phones are stolen phones or phones people got on a plan and then cancelled the plan without paying the rest of the phone off. They shouldn't be allowed to be sold.
Awesome video and great idea! Two questions: one, is there enough room for a second cooler? Two, have you had any luck finding a way to turn off the phone screen while docked? It bothers me to just have it dim 😆
I think that one cooler is more than enough, I have a Black Shark Funcooler Pro and I always use it to play games on my phone (Mi8), it always make the phone cooler, even when playing heavy games
Samsung has DeX since the S8 and SD 855 is still a great performer in 2021. So if you do value headphone jack a lot and don't care much about the camera, go for the S10 series. Furthermore, the S10 series is eligible for Samsung's three year OS update policy. What it means is that the S10 series will get Android 12 as its final major OS update.
Isn't blacklisted equal to stolen phone? Isn't buying stolen goods a felony in your state? Here in Spain, buying stolen goods is a felony punished from half to 2 years - not in jail if you do not have priors -, that is why I ask.
Possibly blacklisted for being attempted to use at a mobile service company other than the one it was purchased (For example, you buy a phone at AT&T and you try to use it with a TMobile SIM)
@@AlanyG21 No, that is a SIM locked phone. These are stolen, lost, or phones with unpaid balance on the device payment plan, aka sort of stolen as well. Certainly buying these knowingly is likely a crime.
You cannot have a lower temperature reading with a simple fan on a heat sink than ambient air, it would violate the rules of thermodynamics. Infrared temp measurements are notorious for being wrong, use it on a cast iron skillet compared to a stainless steel. The stainless steel will give a low reading. What was the room temp?
16 seconds in and i got very excited as im watching this with my old s10 sitting next to my monitor as i has done since ive had a new phone. Guess what im doing next.
THe S10 is pretty sharp. I am a military/college student on a budget and I returned a 1500 laptop cause I only ever used Word and Soulcalibur 6 on Parsec, and I just bought an adaptor for hmdi, ethernet, and USB and happy with the results
If you think that's awesome, wait until you discover blacklisted cars - super cheap, but they can't be registered and you have to start it with a screwdriver
I have a Note 10, and used Dex while my pc was out of commission. It can handle multiple programs running at the same time, BUT it is not a desk top system, if you try to run multiple heavy programs at the same time, it will hit the system a lot faster than even a cheap pc. Phones just aren't as good at multi tasking. When I say heavy programs, I mean Watching a 4k movie while playing 3d games and using a torrent downloader in the back ground, or something like that. I have burdened my phone before. You just can't push it as hard as a pc. Normal use is fine, and a phone like this would make a great home theater pc for movies.
That is why I still don't believe that smartphones with Desktop Mode is a true PC replacement. Even in the case of Office work, you can't open multiple files of the same format unlike in Windows 10 or macOS.
@@farishanafiah8461 Google Docs works just fine for office work. But of you're into computer aided drafting, android is not a good platform for it. All of the cad programs I've tried are extraordinarily clunky.
Very cool. I think this is what Apple is trying to move toward to with its push to make iOS and macOS the same system. In the next decade you’ll see them move away from laptops and move towards phones and tablets that can dock into screens like this.
If apple wanted to do this, they could do it tomorrow. There is nothing stopping them from allowing an ipad-OS like mode from an iphone except huge amounts of money. I would love it if I could use "Dex" with an iphone, but it's never gonna happen. Likewise, I would love a touchscreen Mac with apple pencil support, also not happening because money
Why is the phone blacklisted? Never heard of this term before. Is that like being locked out of network like iPhones? With iPhones, we just jailbreak them.
I had this idea for a few years now. I even remember suggesting the uploader to make something like this on his video. I'm glad he did. I got the USB to HDMI for my old CRT TV to play some dynasty warriors, but it turn out its better just to play zombie base building game like the walking dead survivor on my light weight discounted LG phone lol. Less hassle. P. S don't use those cheap fan cooler. They won't last. I got some heavy duty mini fan with some sweeper sheet as dust filter. You'll thank me later.
If the usage is with a TV like this video, a ThinkCentre Tiny could be a better buy right now than the Pi 4, depending on what accessories a person may need or have on hand. There are some tiny computers around that only need storage and a power supply, two things that don't come with the Pi 4 either. Yeah, the Pi 4 will use less power, but it also has less power. Both options are good, just adding another option for people who may see this. I'm biased because I just bought a couple of tiny desktops after looking at the Pi 400.
@@johnsmith-gs4qf you need to add up the charger, the hdmi adapter, the case (which needs to be good because they get very hot), the sd card, and possibly other accessories. That doesn’t sound so cheap to me, and you must keep in mind that the pi is way less powerful. Don’t get me wrong, a pi can be amazing but not in this case
I still use my S10 for games as a secondary with my main being an S21 Ultra. I was also confused with the Blacklisted labeling, wasnt what i initially thought it meant.
love the channel I've always been inspired by the idea of dex and today is the day i give in i have been an iPhone user since the start only ever using cheap android phone to begin with then switched but i have found an s8 and Samsung dex device for just under $200 cad and i hope to try it out i also have gear vr and the s8 is the only one compatible for both still i have big hopes and i plan to use it for light vr and games mostly since i already have a quest and gaming pc but i might just end up using it for a tv and making it smart or even for a portable monitor i would be getting the dex pad version then but you could use it for home security, kitchen cook videos, games, basically making it into a smart home controller for everything
the idea would be of a 10" wall mounted monitor and a wall mounted Samsung dex pad, you could use whatever wanted for controller and the phone would be plug and play for taking around the house, calls, etc as well i think it would be a good project and if it were small enough to disguise as a picture frame would be even better
I just read that the minimum requirements for Windows 11 to run is a Snapdragon 850. I've heard the 855 are practically the same as 850 but with 5G built in. I guess you shouldn't have any problem.
I do have a question for you sir. I have been subscribed to you for over a year and videos are beyond helpful. You're the reason why I'm getting into IT. But my question is, will super smash melee run at full speed on this device? I'm asking because I have the device lol I'm huge into retro gaming
Walmart sells a working unlocked S10e for 160$ as cool as buying a blacklisted phone is most people should realistically buy a refurbished unlocked phone for just a little bit more Also the S10e and other phones use the 865.
Maybe even take the phone apart and put a bigger cooler directly on the SOC… can also remove the small screen and place it in a small milled or 3D printed enclosure. I was planning something like that, you can just use a blacklisted phone with a bad screen and a cheap dex adapter.
Probably a Dumb question. Blacklisted means it doesn't work only in usa couriers (at&t version...) Would it work in other countries. if not will it work if i flash a costum ROM, i know dex wont work but s10 for 160$ is great.
Neat concept. Just curious to make this useful - * Does Samsung allow > 1440p monitors.... or > 1080p without their overpriced dock? * Can you limit battery charging to something like 50-70% to protect the battery while being plugged in constantly? They used to not be able to do either of these things, which limited their usefulness.
On my Samsung galaxy tab s6 lite, there is a option to limit the battery to 75%. It has the exact same software other than tablet optimizations, so it should work
I never owned a Samsung but i always root my phone for that battery limit charging feature. From what i see, its a hassle to root newer Samsung devices. Its an important feature but phone manufactures dont care since they want us to replace our phones frequently
im using a 7 dollar ebay dock at 1440p. And Samsung has battery limiting feature at 85% i have permanently turned on unless I am traveling for the day.
You have to be on Android 10!! Because USB Storage is not working on Android 11 anymore. So you can use external drive for Retroarch Roms. And if you need 1440p@120Hz and 4K/60 with HDMI Port you have to use this Dock: "Cable Matters USB C Multiport Adapter USB C Hub HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, USB 2.0, Fast Ethernet, 60W PD in Black - Thunderbolt 3 Port Compatible for MacBook Pro, Dell XPS, HP Spectre x360 and More"
Makes you ask why phone manufacturers haven't established a factory standard USB docking interface. Give an old phone new life as a booger picking, tricycle motors computer. You know, instead of being toxic landfill?
Be careful mate... Garena, Tencent and Mühoyo sometimes ban account who use screen mirroring app or 3rd party controller app because they say it was a violation. Kinda ridiculous for a developer who still let PC emulator gamers plays alongside with mobile players
I don’t want to help thieves profit from their thefts. If I knew for sure, that it was somebody who didn’t pay their bill that would be different, but stolen phones are usually the ones that get blacklisted.
ETA Prime over here like "See the best performance per dollar is definitely the fenced cell phones from Slippy Nate down by the bus station." Jokes aside, excellent vid!
My dad bought blacklisted phone apparently it was stolen and police came to take it... Awkward situation, he needed to explain that he didn't stole it...
I bet this setup at $120 is better performing than media players that cost the same amount but then again you have to pay like $24 for the dock as well
Stolen stuff is usually cheaper, but you really shouldn't knowingly buy stolen phones, as it promotes violent robbery to steal them in the first place.
I've watched a ton of Samsung DeX videos and didn't know it supports touch screen.. That's awesome to know.. Also, I only have the USB-C to hdmi cable instead of the dock to unfortunately the little cooler fan will not work bc to enable DeX mode it needs to be charging so I have to wireless charge.. Only way to use to fan to cool it is to buy a dock that way it'll charge using the usbC input. Might as well buy an actual Samsung DeX pad with a fan already built in...? I guess

Love your videos. Could you make a tutorial on how to run roms from an smb in batocera and reclabox? The guides in the wikis are actually a bit confusing
The S10 is better than most laptops given its SD 855 and 8 GB of ram. The only problem I have is that Chrome doesn't have the bookmarks bar so it's not as convenient as the real desktop systems. Maybe another browser has the bookmarks bar but then my Chromebook wouldn't sync with it.
