Its crinkly not because it needs more oils it is because it is not worked enough. Cow hide it thick and tough breaking the fibers is very labor intensive
You have no idea how many projects you unlocked for me! Im lucky enough to work in a petshop that uses more organic products so i have untreated collagen availible Ohh by the way, if you use vegetable oil while tanning it will get a little less rough at the end. At least it works with fish leather
Make it out of real deer hide. Probably could get some free from Salem prime cuts. Would be super interesting. Tanning and such. Just an idea 💡. Loved this video and the beard growing one myself.
Didn't they used to use urine in olden days during the tanning process....nowadays we flush it away but back then it was a useful commodity. Bit of a stink that could raise a few eyebrows with neighbours & family members. Not sure how it would be received by youtube viewers!!
Mhh lots of things are wrong. 1) please study a little more about tanning. However your idea could work. 2) try to characterise what you have. From what I know, at least in the past, dog bones where made from trims of limed splits. So, no grain, and if (I'm not sure about this) if are still in limed state they are saturated from Calcium. This will prevent any fatliquor to penetrate the fibers. 3) Next time try to proceed in this way: 1 fully rehidratate the bones. Use warm water and some soap. Take plenty of time. 2 try to understand if it is still saturated by Calcium (measure pH etc). After this you can have a better idea on how to proceed.
