Turn a Dresser Into a Kitchen Island!

Check out this cool little kitchen island I made from a $15 dresser I found at a thrift store. I built a 2x4 riser base for the casters, took out the bottom drawers and covered the open shelves with scrap wood slats, and built a butcher block style top out of pine 2x6 boards I joined together. I turned out awesome, so check it out!

Upon unboxing, I was immediately upset at how the rails were very noticeably bent. But I kept going, all tools needed to assemble were included ru-vid.comUgkxqtX4Dxs6aecAZEuz6GY5-d81YecKCshn and I had it set up in about 30 minutes. Honestly I love this thing, make sure to read the measurements and measure your space so you know if it'll work for you. I bought this to put inside my closet, underneath where I hang my clothes and it is absolutely perfect! It is VERY sturdy and all drawers glide easily and mine are stuffed, and they are still flush when closed.

Boy, are you married? ♡♡♡ love that your man can build. Where can I get a guy that diy's. I must have one. Love this. I didn't know about the mineral oil. And thanks for the tip on holding the wood in place over night to a metal flat table to not have it bend so much. I did a similar item and didn't know how to fix that. I guess I can try again. Thanks.

I have refurbed all the furniture in my house, my entertainment center was an old rolling tool box, my end table is was an old jr high school locker, my coffee table was an old military footlocker and I'm now building an patio bar cart out of an old stand up jewelry box. I've saved SO MUCH money redoing my own furniture plus had fun doing it. I even saved money on the paint, I went and bought a gallon of Glidden Red Barn paint for like $20 and after doing all the furniture I still have 1/4 of the gallon left. I may use the 2x4 strip idea in the bar cart, that's a pretty cool trick that I never even thought about.

Well done mate, it looks really professional and the finish is excellent too. Thanks for going to the effort of filming and sharing this project. N.

Can I assume it might be possible to make the top wide enough that it overhangs and could also be turned into/used as an island raised kitchen bar style table. Perhaps to have a couple stools along with it?

Love the finished result. I'm curious what size wheels did you use on it? They looked like a good size in proportion to the piece. I'm asking because I had looked at other videos repurposing a dresser for an island and most used these tiny wheels. Looked weird to me.

I watched this video because I've been thinking of doing something similar, only to get to unveiling at the ending and could not figure out why I recognized your background wall. Then it hit me. I built a bed frame last year and almost messaged you about your industrial dresser because it complimented the design so well!

Awesome, I found a 4 ft. wood dresser at my local thrift store for 4 dollars as it was missing two bottom drawers, so it is also going to become my kitchen island. It's already cabinet height so luckily no casters needed. I will take out the drawer hardware, and make shelves from them and add a large butcher block top and thick legs to create an eating/ entertaining area. Can't wait!

Great video Kevin...just would like to have seen how you mounted the "butcher block" to the cabinet...do you have another video that shows a similar process?
@MrDiyDork
@MrDiyDork 7 лет назад
I drilled (4) 1/2" diameter holes in each corner of the dresser's original top, flipped it over on top of the butcher block, and attached it with 1-1/2" long wood screws with big fender washers. In my how to install butcher block countertops video series, I have better visuals of how I installed them. The screw/fender washer combo works like a clamp to hold the butcher block top down to the dresser, but the big 1/2" hole allows it room to move if the wood swells or shrinks.

Awesome job! I've thought about doing something like that before, this maybe the inspiration I need to go find a dresser like that. Just out of curiosity, what would you price something like that?
@MrDiyDork
@MrDiyDork 7 лет назад
I'm not sure what I'm going to price it at yet. I probably put a little too much work into it for an average flip, so I'll have to see if there's any other islands for sale around here and see how much their going for, and probably go a little higher that them. Pricing usually depends on how big of an area you live in, where you sell (craigslist, store, booth, etc), and how much the market is willing to pay, so it really varies.
