In this video, I show how to make a snowman decoration using a skew chisel. turning beads with a skew is a great way to get more familiar and comfortable with this efficient tool. The snowman consists of three beads making for a great exercise and skill builder that will result in items that can be easily sold or gifted. This is an exercise to increase my skills with the tool.
For the best CA finish possible use Starbond CA Adhesives!

Man I am glad you left your mistakes in the video. I am trying to master the skew myself, but it’s so frustrating when you go for the “one last cut” and SNAG! 😂😂

Nice way to make a snowman. Catches happen all the time with me. Hope to get better with more practice. I'm glad you didn't edit out the catches.Thanks

I make these little guys then split them in two. Now you have two snowmen. I hot glue pin type clasp to the back paint/ decorate to your liking. Gals love them as lapel pins on their coats mine are smaller about 1/2 to 5/8 dia maybe 2 to 21/2 long

Like the hat shape and grain. Best I’ve seen have you tried a snow man with one ball for body one ball for head with your style hat it would be a winner

Hi Darryl, Great Snowman. Thanks for showing the catches and the fact they can be removed as well, so it's not the end of the world when catches happen. Cheers, Huw

On the road to mastering the skew, there are many catches 😀😂🤣😁. This just might become a t-shirt

Very clever hat band decoration. I believe one of the fun things about woodworking is the chance to continually push our comfort zones. Glad to see you do that with the skew and so encourage others. (I also need to improve my skills with the skew.) Great video. Thanks for sharing.

New to turning and did several of these last weekend. Will be doing more this weekend and wanted to try using a skew but chickened out. Thanks for the explanation and the confidence knowing if I bark it up good, I'm not alone!

@@DreadKnotWoodshop So this was a couple months ago. The wife loved the snowmen and pimped me out making literally dozens of them this year to give as gifts. I'm about snowman'ed out by now. I did try several with the skew just to spice things up. Minimal catches and I've learned a lot!

Fantastic job. Just what i needed. Last night’s attempt using the detail spindle gouges left too large of a gap between sections and I knew I had to try the skew. So this demo was perfect for me. And, kudos on the catches, those were good ones. Thanks for leaving them in. I appreciate the honesty!!

Rubbing a piece of cocobolo or ebony or any kind of oily wood against the hat would also leave a mark on the wood for the decoration. I’ve never used purpleheart lumber to see what color it leaves behind, maybe I’ll test it out. I learned this trick watching Johannes Michelsen when he turned his wooden hats.

Awesome job! Been waiting for this one since you posted the snowmen on IG, and it was worth the wait! Now I just have to work up the guts to try it out myself and overcome my own fear of the skew. The good news is I have a few months before next Xmas so hopefully I can get a few of them to a point where they look like yours does before then. :)

I just attempted my first snowman and used my skew. I did really good but had enough catches that it looked more like a turd in a top hat instead of snowman. Good job

As someone who has yet to pick up a tool for making shavings, I appreciate that you explain as you go along. It's fun to watch others' creations, but even more so when more understanding is the result. What is it about your use of the skew that caused the kick-back/cut-out? Is there a different position that would prevent this from happening? The hat looks great in spalted maple!
@DreadKnotWoodshop
@DreadKnotWoodshop 4 года назад
The difficulty appears to lie in cutting with a small portion of the bevel while avoiding the introduction of either the heel or toe of the skew. It's far more difficult to do than it sounds 😁

Thanks for this! I also am a new turner and have tried a few snowmen but haven’t tried a CA glue finish. Is that just rubbed in with a lint free paper towel?
