I am so glad that I finally built up the nerve to try this idea for removable fabric wallpaper. It adds so much charm and coziness to our room already and it's not even finished. I have done this twice to my dining room. The starch works so well and does zero damage to wall. If you want to cover old wallpaper it works great. I use cotton "duck" cloth. Spray bottle with starch on wall, on back of cloth, apply to wall and smooth. Use pushpins to hold wet fabric on. Do not prewash fabric to keep crisp new fabric look and feel. Do be aware fabric will shrink as it dries so be generous around edges. Mine has stayed flawlessly for years. Pulls off super easy. Wipe down walls with water after removal.

It looks awesome Hilary. I’ve used the same technique to cover the glass on my laundry room door with lace. The liquid starch is a bit messy but drys completely and you can’t tell at all how it’s been applied. The result looks charming as well as gives a bit of privacy to a door that opens directly to my neighbors back lawn. I’m able to wipe them down with a cloth if at all dirty, If I feel they need to be washed, I then simply peel them off and after gently laundering I reapply with the same process. I’ve actually done this on other glass projects and windows for a number of years. It’s very economical and adds so much charm to what could have been an awkward decorative challenge. I can’t wait to see your room finished. It makes me want to do a focal wall in my bedroom and perhaps even to the dining area of my home. ❤

The kids in our church made a mural in the community/classroom space this way. They used strips of fabric to make different shapes and it’s so beautiful. I look forward to seeing the final result on this project when you get there!

For the sharp blade to cut the fabric along the woodwork, maybe a rotary cutter would work. They're used to cut fabric for quilting and the blade rolls, so it shouldn't be able to "pull" or "catch" the fabric. It looks beautiful!

You are a DIY and home improvement machine! I truly think there may be nothing you cannot do. I have a super creative friend in Portugal who bought an old abandoned farm. She's recreating it with such style and vision and all with second hand materials. I joke with her about knitting a car from the spare parts and equipment lying around. Turned out so pretty. I'm so happy I found your video. I just did a similar treatment in my dining room with board and batten wall to 6ft and the top two feet I did fabric because wallpaper would've been too expensive. So I picked a pretty fabric with birds similar to the wallpaper I liked. This treatment is less permanent and didn't break the bank.

When my middle daughter graduated from college, she moved home for a time. We redecorated her room to be more adult and one wall was done with fabric and starch. That was in 2012 and the wall still looks great.

As always, you and Dan did a great job! Not sure why there are so many comments about checks being difficult to line up, since you have already completed over 90% of it and it looks very well aligned to me. I vote for a floral fabric on your lamp shades. And I think you should pull a color from your duvet cover and matching drapes to paint the lingerie chest. I think it will look so much better a different color. Looking forward to seeing the completed room (I hope you finally find some crown moulding that you like). Blessings!❤

What a TROOPER Hilary! That is ,as you mentioned a scary project. Dan is great he never seems to disagree with your decorating sense, and seems completely supportive. I think it’s fabulous. When my son was little and I was a young ambitious woman like you, fabric wall paper was all the rage. I decided I was going to do a guest half bathroom. I purchased soft floral fabric and it was easy and I even did the ceiling. It really looked incredible and it was fun. I was renting and when I left I just took it down, and used a mop( no swiffer back then)to clean the walls, then washcloth to clean a 2nd time. You would have never known The walls looked fresh afterward. I think it’s a good idea to paint the small dresser. Excellent work ! Oh heavens, your a brave couple! I remember my parents doing something similar in the mid 1960’s using burlap and paint--LOTS of paint. I wasn’t sure my parents would survive this project but they did and it looked so neat!

Oooh my gosh! I did this same thing back in the 80’s!! I did exactly like you have! It took me a long while to finally get the project underway and I only did ONE wall! It went much faster than I imagined. I used a sponge to put the paste / starch up to adhere the fabric. It appears as though you are doing a great job!!!! A much larger project than I would have undertaken!! Congratulations!! The fabric I chose was floral, and it was a challenge matching the print.

I once knew a lady that had a beautiful Tudor home. She used fabric as a large molding around her rooms, also covered refrigs,tables, doors on cabinet. Of course all different fabrics patterns. It was gorgeous, all very nouveau style. Beautiful.

My Grandma used to do this with her cabinets to put flowers and what not on them and Lace on the Windows/Door Windows, and she'd change them out for holidays/seasons.

Good work! It reminds me of grass cloth panels where the idea isn't to match each panel but to let each one stand on its own. It's beautiful! Fabric and wallpaper has become really expensive in Ontario so it makes me very nervous to attempt anything on my own but you did a great job 👍

Now I will say when I saw the technique years ago they put the fabric into the starch and wrung it out and applied it to the wall. Yours turned out beautiful, I think I will try it. I'm only using it in very small spaces.

That French Provincial lingerie dresser.... I had that whole set with the canopy bed when I was a little girl in the 70's. I love it!!! The top Finial my friend Wendy and I would take off and pretend it was a microphone, we were pretending to be Olivia Newton-John. Oh the memories! Everything is looking beautiful!

Agreeing! Hillary, this video made me anxious too. I had to skip to the end to see if it turned out! To be fair, Hubby and I spent 10 hours last Saturday wallpapering our kitchen so it was probably some PTSD. 🙂 We used 3 rolls and had to order one more. Ours is a soft green gingham and I love it. I think your bedroom will be like a jewel box like Jennifer L. Scott describes in one of her videos. 😍

What about those rotary cutting tools for cutting I would definitely put a straightedge against whatever I was cutting that it would make it so much easier in those things are sharp I do a lot of leather and they are awesome

Whoa! Huge, huge project. Way more than I would undertake. Maybe an accent wall but an entire room would be so overwhelming, I wouldn't be able to tackle it. Wondering why you went with fabric and not just wallpaper. Wallpaper would be easier and so many options for color and design, close to the fabric you selected. I agree that the chest is too yellow now and will look good painted, it's such a nice piece and fits perfectly. Anxious to see the finished room, all your projects turn out beautifully.

Love the.molding Hilary...you're brave to take on that project...my parents owned a 3 decker apt home and when they got new tenants they would always re paper the bedrooms because it was an old building and walls were not even. Can't wait to see end results.

Military wives use to do it. I never had the money for it. Only problem is you have to watch the dark colors for bleeding on the wall. Also, when you move out that wall has to pass military moveout inspection. So, all the starch has to be off. It is tedious removing it but hot water and lots of rubbing takes it off. Depends on the paint under neath too. Lasted some of my friends for the couple of years they would be in a place. Has a big impact on the room to make it look yours. Vacuum the walls to remove dust. Re starch it if it comes loose. Had a friend who did her whole kitchen in it, even making a border out of another pattern but matching. Looked fabulous. When she moved out could not tell it was on the wall. Looked like wallpaper. She used steam iron to remove it and spray bottle of vinegar water.

Such a brave endeavour. Where I’m from the fabric would have cost a fortune 😕, and my concern would be the dried starch on fabric attracting more dust. Looking forward to the end results. Reminds me of my grandmas house that I loved.

My mom did this for an accent wall in my bedroom in the 1970's. It was a rental and it came right off with no problem when we moved.

I’ve done a ton of wallpapering over the years. Checks are not a good choice for walls or ceilings that are not plumb. It shows up every defect, such as wavy lines. Good luck to you 👍

You have made such a easy to watch video of your fabric wallpaper. Thanks for that. I have done this before in a previous home but to cover my washer and dryer that did not match, it worked well. Now in my present home I want to try this technique on three windows over my Jacuzzi tub in my master bathroom. Currently there are old metal mini blinds on the windows. I could not find any liquid starch in my area, but I did find some spray starch. I am hoping the fabric will adhere to the glass with the spray starch and stay there. Wish me luck!

Hilary we put up small yellow & white check wallpaper in our kitchen years ago. Checks are the most difficult to work with and seams show in wallpaper also. Once you put your furniture, curtains and wall decor back. Your seams won't show as easy. I did one large wall with fabric then but that was all. BTW, floral's are pretty on lampshades in front of your check fabric wall. LOL 😂 I am one to give you advice. Your home is so pretty!

Looks great so far! When it comes time to use a sharp knife to cut the fabric you need a big metal ruler to put against the fabric, that ruler will keep the fabric taut so you don't pull the fabric away from the wall and corners as you cut and also serves to give you a straight cut.

I have been doing this for years. Instead of starch, i use pva glue watered down. Even though ive become quite good at it, i would never attempt a chequered fabric. You are amazing for using that pattern, and doing it so well.

@@gailwilliams8515 Basically, it spreads better and gets into the fabric really well. It made my fabric stick better, and as it dries clear it doesn't really matter how much you use, or if you want to do several coats. I've used from thin fabrics to upholstery fabrics, it makes no difference. It washes off the walls, out of the fabic with no problems so you can reuse if you'd like.

I'm so intrigued by this. I've never seen actual fabric like that put on the walls. Years ago I dated a guy that his house had fabric wallpaper. The fabric was attached to vinyl type stuff that had glue like old fashioned wall paper. I'll be so interested in seeing the final project.
