Another tip: adding a bit of noise often helps removing/reducing banding
@vyrusvisuals
@vyrusvisuals Год назад
Exactly, been doing that only. Dither is also good, but some time we create gradients using brush tools so noise works best there.
@nico-3188

@@vyrusvisuals agreed, but this works mostly when you are in 16bit mode.

As an audio engineer, I'm dithering the master output because of mp3 releases and mp3 files are 16-bit maximum. But if I choose a 24-bit FLAC file as an output option, I don't have to apply dithering the right away. This dithering is similar to it because both of them apply noise and make them seamless in lower quality formats.
@antoinepersonnel6509
@antoinepersonnel6509 Год назад
it's kinda the same because they are both "DAC" of some sorts, one convert visual color informations to binary files that represent the chosen color, the other convert analog generated soundwaves to binary files that contain the sound, and this digital file format can't be precise to the exxxxxxxxxxxxtra 0.0000001 decimal if you don't give it enough space to be :), hence stepping effect like banding in colors or aliasing for sound as it's commonly called.

ikr? Sad that mp3 codec "lame" do not save all of dithering frequencies (Lame don't save 20k+ Hz), so you should convert to mp3 thru iTunes software. But iTunes codec sometimes messes with the phase of track. Lame codec doing it less. A double-edged sword innit

Unless, this is just a comment in general. I really like your teaching style. It is straightforward and linear. You always explain what you are doing and why. Some of the lessons are so full of information it can really go by fast, but you never fail to deliver the what, why and how. Thanks!

Worth noting for anyone that finds they can never get rid of banding it could be that their monitor is actually the issue. Monitors with a low dynamic range can't handle gradients very well. You can find monitor tests online to check this, or send your design to another device to see if the banding is present. Increasing image size to 300 DPI and adding a layer of grain will also help.
@anskcm7462
@anskcm7462 Год назад
This is my way of avoiding the bands.. After making the gradient, I'll just converted into smart object then goto camera raw filter. Reduce noise from noise option. Then add some noise from effect option.

@AnnLiesArtist
@AnnLiesArtist Год назад
If you're blurring an existing smart object and are having issues with banding it always helps to add a Scatter layer filter on top of your gaussian blur, that will add a similar dithering effect and will work on any image inside the smart object!

@AnnLiesArtist Год назад
Nah I don’t care about clout, just have a weird edge-case I use it for and a shit memory It’s called Spatter, my bad. It’s under Filter>Filter Gallery>Brush Strokes>Spatter.
@AnnLiesArtist
@AnnLiesArtist Год назад
Your Filter Gallery might be greyed out. If so it’s probably because your document isn’t 8 Bits/Channel. You can change this in Image>Mode. For some reason adobe’s filter gallery effects won’t work in any other amount o bits.

I always used to provide edited images with replaced spotlight backdrops... some customers complained more than others, I guess in proportion to the quality of their screen... anyway, now I always use gaussian noise on top, that way I have a LOT more control over how it looks. Also that noise makes for a far more pleasing overall image than the dither.
