I've been HUGELY influenced by Billy Joel ever since I was a kid. This is a tribute to a living legend... The one and only Mr. Billy Joel. I sang and recorded as an homage to Billy's signature style. No edits. No autotune. Everything you hear was recorded in one continuous take.

RU-vid has been my only "TV" for over 10 years. I've never liked, disliked, or subscribed, because I consider all that to be a tracking device. I do pay for Premium, so everyone gets paid. I just can't stand ads. That said, I've just liked and subscribed here for the first time. Billy Joel has done a ton of great stuff, and is the living legend as you say. But you just made me cry. I played both of you back and forth. When I heard him do this last week my immediate thought was eh, it's OK, and good to have some new from him. Somehow, you've just one upped him without becoming him; you retained yourself. That is nearly impossible to do in a cover. It's time for you to produce a bunch of new stuff from your own soul. I'm sending you the spiritual gumption to get to it. Make it good, and don't compromise. You're not the next Robby Fontana.....you're the only one.

Wow! That was so extremely kind of you to say! Thank you so much!! Yes I am working on a new album of original material… thank you again!! I’m so glad you were moved by my performance… 🙏✨

Not kind of me to say, but right for me to say. I'm not sure yet if it's your performance that moves me, or simply you. I'll grant that I can detect an ever so slight bit of hesitation in that performance, but not only does it make it yours, it gets tighter each time you practice. It's always a practice. I'm 60, and I've listened to everything. Few have grabbed me as you have. I've even listened to some old thick 78's that were in an old house we moved into when I was a kid. I also have 2 unique melodies I laid down 25 years ago that I haven't heard anywhere from any time, I'd be honored to share with you to see if you could turn them into a useful thing. I don't know who you are or why this looks like a startup, but it's easy to see you and figure you'll be moving multitudes. @@robbyfontana

I noticed a tremendous difference in emotional energy between the 'album' version of this song and the live performances by Billy and others. I think it comes down to the pitch correction on the studio version, it takes a lot of the emotion out of the singers voice. Not to take anything away from Robby (who is fantastic here) or what you said about him, but I'd suggest maybe checking out Billy's live version of the song and see if it makes you feel something more.

Yeah, I checked that before I heard Robby. I found it rather dry, and Billy seemed to push it for the crowd. Didn't work for me. @@wvman2374

Emotional energy. Interesting that you make the reference. Are we talking about the energy input by the performer? Or the energy taken by the listener? Billy's AI induced video is spectacular; complete with all the emotional energy he ever exuded. It's a masterpiece. Live at the Grammy's, it felt like he pushed it too hard...perhaps he was nervous in such a venue. I've listened to all the covers, and I still say Robby does it best, including Billy. I'd make a few changes, have him hold a few notes 1 second longer to make perfect time. I told him on day one that I want this to blow up, I want it to get a million views. It has continued to increase by 100 a day, and I don't doubt that my hope and prayer has to do with it. If you listen to it again, turn the volume up to max, then turn it down to the proper for you. @@wvman2374

I would have preferred Billy's version to be more like this, with just the piano and clear vocals. I'm hoping to see a live version and perhaps a stripped down version if there is an album forthcoming.

Very well done! I imagine this is how it would have sounded in Billys prime. Also, if you look at his MSG performance, he doesn't do the arpeggios either.

Great work, Great performance. Too bad for the lack of arpeggio in the chorus. Central part less heartfelt but very good.. Top.
@thefourthwatch6337
@thefourthwatch6337 7 месяцев назад
I beg to differ. Please, Please let me differ! I think Joel only did that because it's his signature style, and this interpretation better fits the message and core of the composition. I realize that he added the arpeggio to bring a sense of uplifting to an otherwise barely holding out hope lyrics, but it's a bit too fluttery given the seriousness of the underlying sentiment. This guy really put his own soul into this, and it's astounding how quickly he developed it; you would almost think he was waiting for it.

I'm so sorry I suggested you maybe held something back or hesitated at all. As I play it again and again, with full volume.....it's just so crisp and clear, but the way you tell the story just makes me ball. There's something about you.

Hahah… no worries at all! I did hold back… I live in an apartment and I was trying not to annoy the neighbors!!! I would have had to have gone full volume on the choruses to really hit those notes but I was afraid someone might call the cops! Hahahahhaha Such is life in a tiny home studio in an apartment. 😂😂 Email me anything you like… can’t guarantee I’ll do anything with it though: Robby@robbyfontana.com And again, thank you for your kindness and your thoughtfulness to post such sincere feedback. I am inspired to do better and much, much more. 🙏

@robbyfontana
@robbyfontana 7 месяцев назад
It’s a challenging song! But no I’m not playing it in 4/4… I’m playing it in 6/8… with the accents on 1 and 4… which might make it seem like it’s in 4/4. Hope that helps!
