Blackmagic recently recently a camera app that is totally free and app-solutely amazing. I’m not usually someone who gets very excited about phone apps, but if you have an iPhone, this is a total game changer that brings Blackmagic’s cinema camera user experience to your phone and opens up a ton of options with fully manual controls.

@@Greg-McIver sadly there's nothing even close to this for Android. Filmic Pro, the most popular old pro app for iPhone, does have a version for android, but it doesn't work on all phones, costs money, and lacks a ton of features. Probably the best option on android currently is Sony's Xperia 1 series of phones with their custom cinema pro and video pro apps, but they aren't this integrated. If one is after 100% free and their phone supports the camera 2 api then Open Camera offers a ton of features, and there is even a version with gyroscopic recording ; however, it's all hit or miss. Lastly there is motion cam which to my knowledge is one of the only apps that allows android users to shoot RAW video, but it requires a beefy phone with tons of storage.

It's really a great app. I just tried it on my iPhone 12 Pro and used the clean HDMI out into my ATEM mini. Works seamlessly. And lets me adjust and match the picture quite exactly to the other camera inputs. Deinstalled other camera apps immediatly :)

I installed this app immediately after I heard about it a couple days ago. Love that it keeps your settings when you leave the app. All it’s missing is LOG or the ability to lower contrast and saturation.

Another great feature is the false color. Having 18% middle grey and 80%/90% white card clearly identifed is super-useful for getting exposure correct in manual mode. I have been a faithful Filmic user but this app blows it away. Thanks for the app review!

This is great, and I'm going to try this app for sure. But I also wanted to point out that the Moment app is also fabulous. I got it to work with Moment's anamorphic lens, but I use it all the time for long shutter times with still photos, to shoot RAW images, and to play with frame rates and such for video.

2:54, and it's quite cropped in this vertical position but with horizontal view, at least on my iPhone 12 it is working like that. I like it so much because it's like having a third, more close-up lens, when physically my iPhone has only 2 lenses.

An other very minor complaint: the left-to-right rule of thirds guides don't appear to conform to the widescreen ratio "safe area" guides. So if you want to place something 1/3 or 2/3rd of the way on the vertical level you need to eyeball it. (the top-to-bottom rule of third guides guides are the same for both the widescreen and the regular viewport, so those are fine)

This is nice, but the Rec app also supports timecode sync. I didn’t see that here unless you jammed it with an audio input

o use the volume button for starting and stopping horizontal shooting, the app only allows you only to shoot with phone with the button on the bottom of the phone. The only rotates one way. With the volume button on the top all the information is upside down. Makes it easier to put you finger in the way. (May be because BM is from Australia?)

Android has MotionCam Pro thats mainly for RAW DNG image sequence, but also has ProRes 10/12BIT (4.4.4) with LOG and various noise reductions that are native. Android also has "OpenCam" for even more compressed 10/12BIT LOG options. Both apps have bitrate and bit-depth options. Basically, comparing iPhone to Andriod is like comparing a cinema camera to a hybrid video camera.

I don't have a Ninja, but there are Lightning to HDMI adapters and I know it works with an ATEM, so I don't see why it wouldn't also work with an ATOMOS.

It would have been really awesome, if the ATEM mini would be able to communicate with the app, just like with a Blackmagic camera. I wonder if there is a technical limitation.

Best thing? The iPhone 15 Pro is coming with some decent USB-C 3 speeds + ProRes direct recording towards an SSD, so all of this is really exciting! 🤩 Been on Android for 17 years, time to give Apple a try. 😁

Hi Tom, one of the comments on this video, says you can keep the settings after closing the app. Comments elsewhere, others say you have to reset the settings each time. I also read that Zebras and Peaking still show on the recording. Many thanks. Terry davis

Hey Terry! On my iPhone 14 Pro, the settings have stayed put after restarting both the app and the phone, and I haven't had zebras or focus peaking show on any recordings (thankfully- that sounds super annoying haha).

Just added to my phone as DOP of 20 years owns a RED ---ive had the first 3 BM cameras(first Ursa Mini ) they made but not a fan of BMbased on my experiences however this app is insane for the in a pinch my iphone is a C camera

The enable vertical video option in settings is off, I recorded in landscape mode but my thumbnails in my media tab are vertical. Why? I love the option to be able to record in landscape while holding the phone vertically, but why does it crop?

Tried with 13 pro max, apples lightning to hdmi and atem mini iso. It’s viewable and audio. No zoom or focus adjustment with atem switcher software. Happy but sad for no camera control.

Dude I've been Android my whole life and film vids for my channel on a Blackmagic Pocket cinema camera and edit in resolve... BUT with iPhone's now forced to USB-C (finally), having 4k60FPS ProRes video record directly to an external SSD on the Pro units thanks to a the A17 Pro chips USB Controller, it's getting real tempting. With Blackmagic's announcement of this app stating it'll use their colour science so you can more easily match with their cameras when grading in resolve, far out! I want to know if it will also record straight to SSD like apple has said the native app can, seeing the phone icon in the middle bottom screen of your demo (e.g. 1:12 ) makes me think they'll add suport for external media so you can select where the file goes. Otherwise there wouldn't be a need to highlight recording is going onto internal phone storage, if it could never do otherwise. Really exciting stuff for creators that utilise full manual control and want a seamless workflow between matching grades on multi cam shots.

I didn’t order a 15, so I won’t know for sure, but it’d really be terrific if they had SSD functionality. I’m thinking part of the reason why it’s Apple-only to start is to tap in to some native functionality like that 🤞

This is great stuff. But if you are in Android you can record 4K footage straight to SSD as well. I've been doing this for quite some time with my Samsung S22 and S23 Ultra. Sending all my footage straight to a T7 1TB SSD card. I'm surprised a lot of people were unaware.

Great free app! I’m hoping it stays that way. I’m deleting other camera apps as I believe the native camera app - and it’s access to unique features like Cinematic mode and the Black Camera app for granular control are all I need. Did I mention it’s clean intuitive UI? Yeah, that too.

I am using 15 pro max + this app, when I am shooting Apple Log in 4k 60fps, I always get the frame drop alert (all Apple Log Codec alert the frame drop, but H.264/265 won't), and it will stop recording after a minute or longer, and I found out the when shooting with 120mm, it will alert from the very beginning but the main 24mm lens won't(sometimes). Is something happening the same with your iPhone 15 Pro? I have tested the record to an external hard drive ( Samsung T7 2TB), and shooting with a 120mm lens is still showing the alert, is it only my iPhone? I am not sure if it's a hardware(120 mm lens) issue? or a software issue？

I haven’t used it for a few years, but for some reason I just never really got into it. Not sure why. I was blown away by how fluid and intuitive the Blackmagic app is right away.

It can definitely eat up space (same as when using the regular camera with high settings), so I guess that’s the intended purpose for the cloud subscription.

Ha, it looks like there's a bug where the auto ISO options disappears after you do it manually. Rack focus can be done either manually or with tape to focus 👍

@@tombuck You enable by going into exposure compensation and turning on auto there. We can't do ISO/shutter auto independently due to Apple API limitation at the moment.

@@jbtube73 imported the clip to resolve and it said ProRes in the inspector. It’s just that my 128gb iPhone had room for 8 mins of ProRes 422hq recording.. maybe I need to delete some other stuff.

@@tombuck Yeah this is how I usually know it’s time to upgrade. The IOS stops upgrading, which is followed a little while later be apps that won’t upgrade. I went to X from an iPhone 5. Friends say I’m cheap. I prefer the phrase, fiscally conservative. ☺️

From what I can tell there isn't a true auto shutter setting yet. It does automatically change to the best setting for a given frame rate, but then it stays there.

Right now it doesn't seem like it- when you launch Continuity it overrides the BM app and just shows the normal "Camera in Use" screen. It doesn't look like any of the Camera App settings apply to the Continuity Cam image.
