Tom, thanks for this explanation. After 50 years I finally understand Ronny Meyer’s effortless power on the slice backhand with your “lag example.” He simply lagged on every backhand and the “arm and racquet in a straight line” let him control the racquet face on every shot. Your explanation is brilliant. Thank you so much.

Well done Tom! Slice backhand is my favorite shot and your instruction is spot on.

Thanks Tom. Just wanted to say that your serving tip you gave (to the guy trying to go pro who was bringing his right leg forward) has been monumental for me. I'm way more consistent and balanced keeping the right leg back like pitcher.

Superb, thanks. Sometimes I like to associate my name with Tom Allsopp. Whenever I can, anyway. All of what you say here seems so natural to me; makes sense; I can slice defensively and offensively, drop shot it, and hit deep and hard topspin with 1-handed backhand. My backhand is my weapon. I know exactly where everything is (as you say) and have all kinds of nuances that I can throw in, in order to do this or that - yet for all of that - it still remains what is seemingly a very SIMPLE stroke. However, and conversely, why on earth is my forehand so comparatively complex? All these moving parts and so on. It's okay and a decent weapon but I don't feel nearly as confident with it and never have. Sometimes I shadow swing back and forth between them hoping that I will discover a secret simplicity in the forehand that I'm currently missing. End of rant/question. Truly an exceptional channel. Be well!

The forehand is easy! The two handed backhand makes my head hurt haha

@@TomAllsopp May well be that you have a natural 1-handed backhand! Don't fight it! :)

Hi Tom, could you speak about what part of the ball you're looking to hit? Also any advice on the contact point? Thanks for your work!

Thanks Tom. I just can’t get rid of that flipping of the racket to the right side which you mention at the end of the video. I knew it was a problem because no good player/pro does that. Any tips to fix it?

IMO lock it down with some pressure through the hand and wrist, and lower the swing speed. Impart power by leaning into the shot, not by swinging the racket fast. Also the off hand on the takeback can provide some stability and not allow the flipping to happen.

Please elaborate on using the back muscles to make the slice a weapon. Thanks

Well I didn’t mention that but take the racket back far enough you’ll stretch your back muscles

So the racket head is slightly behind hand at contact to make you pull the racket through contact ?
@TomAllsopp
@TomAllsopp Год назад
No, that sounds like an Eastern grip. And there’s no pulling.

Great stuff. I have faced Tom's slice backhand and can vouch that it is a weapon!

Drop Shot: Because smashing the ball straight into the net is just too mainstream. Let's aim for new lows, people! 🤷‍♂️🎾

All your strokes are too loosey goosey ...its good club players to play relaxed ...but clearly its missing the key element of explosiveness in pro strokes

Great lesson.🎾 With regard to the wrist action. On the backswing, the wrist will be radially deviated towards the thumb (i.e. the wrist will be in a radially deviated position). At contact, the wrist will be in a roughly *neutral* position or slightly radially deviated towards the pinky (i.e. the wrist will be in a slightly ulnar deviated position). But do *NOT* release the wrist to a maximal ulnar deviated position (towards the pinky). Tom talks about this at 08:28 and keeping the buttcap onto the heel of the hand, which will restrict too much ulnar deviation and act like a *brake* . This buttcap cue will ensure that when you finish, your wrist will be in a roughly neutral to slightly deviated towards the pinky position and not in a maximally ulnar deviated position.
