Gorgeous mushrooms! Thank you so much for this. I recently bought a set of Turner because they were more affordable. I just wanted to try something like this and didn’t know much about them so your explanation of the relative qualities has been very handy for me thank you.😅

Glad it was helpful! The Turner brand is my favorite for acrylic gouache. They are affordable and easier to use, in my opinion.

Thanks so much for this super helpful comparison! I have been using Holbein for quite a long time and have been very pleased with them. Seeing the Turner, though, I’d love to give it a try! Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into this video and for sharing your skills and knowledge with us! 💝

Glad it was helpful! If you're used to the Holbein paints, it might take you a moment to adjust your style to the Turner ones. But they are both very nice.

Interesting to note that you use the Sta-Wet palette. I think that accessory makes a helpful contribution to any type of acrylic painting -- and especially acrylic gouache.

I never use any acrylic products without some kind of stay-wet palette anymore. I find that it makes a huge difference and the paint stays nice and fresh for a long time. Depending on the brand of the paint I use, I either use a paper palette or a ceramic palette that I keep on my wet sponge. Some paints get too watery on the paper palette, but they keep just the right amount of moisture on the ceramic palette. It's just a matter of trial and error, but I'm happy with my discovery.

Your mushrooms are beautiful! Thanks so much for the comparision. I ordered the Autumn set of the Holbein Irodori paints and a 24 colour set of the Turner Japanesque paints which I saw on Natasha Newton's channel. The colours look beautiful. Can't wait to try everything out.

I'd love to be able to get my hands on those Irodi sets, they look so pretty. The Japanesque colors are beautiful. I have quite a few and really like them. Just know that they aren't quite like the regular Turner colors. The texture can be a bit different, but once you get used to them, they are very nice. Don't base your experience of the Turner Acryl only on the Japanesque colors, because it's not quite the same, the other colors are easier to use. Have fun!

I thought you had splattered your paper until I realized it was my screen. Lamo, time to clean the paint splatters off! I prefer Turner as well but for more reasons. They are easier to get here, more affordable and the color range is wider here than it is for Holbein. Holbein has a lot of colors but they don't all seem to be available here and the price point is raised by much more than if you got them in Japan. You can order them from Amazon Japan but that isn't very convenient if you only looking to replace some colors. Turner is more affordable so even if I could get Holbein easier the Turner prices allow me to afford more colors. I also love the way the Turners works. It is one of my new favorite mediums. Have you tried any of the Japanesque colors from Turner? They are so nice!

Interesting to see how the two compare. I got some acrylic gouache in a subscription box recently and really enjoyed it. I like how I could keep adding but not disturb the bottom layers. I'll have to see if I can find the turner brand around here as I would prefer them dry faster so you can keep working without having to constantly be drying them. Great mushrooms too!

That's great that you got a set in the box. It looks like you had a great time trying them out. Acrylic gouache is my new favorite medium these days, hehe!

I love acrylic gouache because it has a matte appearance and doesn’t reactivate with water. I keep wanting to try traditional gouache but I feel really intimidated by it!

@@thebirdartistscottage I have a few videos reviewing gouache sets and I got the acrylic Holbein gouache set in a recent art box. Having tried the two, they really are very similar. The acrylic one will not lift what so ever, so nice if you want to do a lot of layering or glaze. But you can do the same with regular gouache if start with thinner layers. One of the reviews I paint a cupcake using this technique and it worked very well!

I have both brands of paint, but I haven't used either one enough to say much about them for sure. I did a little comparison a few weeks ago, but that was more for the differences in color versus the paint itself, although I did notice a few things. Thanks for the video!

It seems like turner has special qualities for blending. A couple other things to consider that I found unusual: the color range has very few single pigments, almost all of them are mixes, even colors like burnt sienna. Only one single pigment blue - ultramarine. Also, there are a lot of fugitive colors so you’ll need to be careful if you care about lightfastness. And even the 3 stars are only rated for fifty years. Even so, I find their working properties quite intriguing.

Good to know. I love working with them, they are so much fun.

Did you make sure you used the same type white in each? I find the acryla white more opaque but there’s titanium vs Chinese white vs a few others. I love the colours of your mushroom stems, ahh.
@Sandrinesgallery
@Sandrinesgallery 2 года назад
I can't remember which whites I used. I do have several and the Acryla has several. I often go for the Titanium as a default, though.

Thanks for taking the time to compare the two and give us your opinion and recommendation. Based on what you said, I am really interested in trying out the Turner Acryl gouache, I had heard great things about them before. I don't like to wait for layers to dry, which is why watercolor is difficult for me to sit down and learn properly. 😅 I have a set of Holbein Acryla gouache and I like them too, but I'm curious about Turner now (which is generally easier to get where I live too, so wouldn't be the worst to prefer those!). Do you also happen to have a recommendation (and maybe affiliate link) for the stay-wet palette you use?
@Sandrinesgallery
@Sandrinesgallery 2 года назад
I'm glad it helped. Here's where you can find one of my palettes: amzn.to/3AGsrJC, the other one hasn't been available for some time. But they are the same brand. It doesn't look like much, but it works very well, at least for me. Also, it's not very big, but again, it's the size I like. If you're looking for something bigger, another great brand: amzn.to/2WhEX3i, or the smaller one of that brand: amzn.to/3kCgAXk

Are you diluting the Turner paints 2:1 as recommended in the instructions?

Not really, I don't pay close attention to the exact amount of water I use. I just mix what feels right at the moment. Sorry for not being more precise.

I have. It's a fun gouache and convenient in the studio. However the gouache in this video is acrylic gouache and doesn't re-wet like regular gouache. Different from the Himi gouache.

I’ve saw an artist keep his acryla gouache in an airtight palette, the kind that are clear 24 wells where each well is about 1/2” x 1” that most people use for keeping regular gouache moist. Have you ever heard of this &/or used this type of palette for acrylic gouache and do you think the acrylic gouache would stay workable long term in this type of pallet? Thank you so much
@Sandrinesgallery
@Sandrinesgallery Год назад
I wouldn't put acryla gouache in an airtight palette, just like I wouldn't do it with acrylic paint. Once it's dry, you can't use it anymore. When I use acrylic gouache, I use a ceramic palette for my mixes and paint out of the tube. If the painting is going to take me more than a day, I put my ceramic palette in a plastic box with a damp sponge or paper towel, just like a stay wet palette. The paint on my ceramic palette stays fresh for several days. But I after a while, it dries out or the quality/texture isn't quite the same anymore.

@@Sandrinesgallery thank you so much for your response!! I was skeptical of the method of putting the acrylic gouache in the stay wet palette, but wanted to double check. Now I know!! Thanks again 😊
