One you tube turner that helped me make do wit what you have is the Rebel Turner some of his older turning videos are invaluable. His name is Al Furtado. Good job and good luck on your adventure.
I’m watching your video on the serving platter right now. It’s quite a nifty idea. I may have to try to make one myself. I noticed that you were smoking a cigarette while you were turning the platter. I’m sure you have already heard more times than you care to about the health issues with smoking. That’s not what I’m writing about. Your shop is covered with sawdust, sanding dust, wood chips and other stuff that is extremely flammable when it is in such a very small size. You could easily have a flash fire if a coal from your cigarette gets into the wood dust. I just don’t want to see you burn your shop down.
I do appreciate your concern but I'm gonna be alright. Believe it or not, I spent 10 years as a volunteer fire fighter. What I learned about embers, open flame and combustible materials could fill a room in fine print. What I do know is that the embers on the end of a cigarette are just not hot enough to ignite saw dust. Fact is, you can drop a lit cigarette into a can of gasoline and it would go out. BUT... If you were to thump that same cigarette so that air rushes across the embers, THEN the fresh oxygen being forced onto it can feed those same embers and cause them to heat up exponentially. Then you may have enough heat to ignite another combustible. Open flame carries MUCH more heat than smoldering tobacco. And in the same dusty scenario, just a match or a candle flame could set off the dust in most wood working shops like a bomb!
Oh... Let me know how your platter turns out. I'd love to see it. I'm trying to get my new wood working shop built right now. Just as soon as I get in it I want to get back to videoing and see what else I can turn up.
I will definitely let you know when or if I manage to make a similar platter. Although it might be a while before I can get back to working with my lathe. My lathe is in my garage (without A/C) and it was 110° here today. My apologies if you interpreted any of my comments as being critical. It wasn’t my intention. You had asked for input in your videos and I was simply sharing some of my own experiences.
@@HerbD-fg8dy Oh, no. No offense taken. I appreciate the comments and the advice. It's just that the smoking comment I took as a teachable moment. I got a bad habit of that kind of crap. I understand fully about the AC. We've had high 90's here for the last few weeks with high humidity driving the heat index well into the triple digits. Every day I come in with my clothes soaking wet from sweat. I've got lots of stuff turned but waiting for finishing until the weather dries out or I get my new shop built. I'm thinking I may make a short video showing off some of the stuff I've turned recently. Stay tuned for that!
