I cut down my own trees and process my own wood from the 300ish acres set I have that was passed down from my family to me and then I make all sorts of tables, chairs, desks, cabinets, jewelry & boxes. You name it, I make it and I wouldn't ever in a million years charge somebody $1,200 for this even if I could find somebody that is dumb enough to pay that much. It looks like a real amateur job (which, of course, it IS...), but I have a lot more work to do on that bathroom's walls, plumbing, so, maybe I'll go back at it, again, later. The laborer is supplying his skill, time, tools, gas etc....the client is supplying a "yes i like that idea" and the agreed money to back it up. That's how a capitalistic system works. If people think someone is charging too much well they don't get paid and the business shuts down, or they make necessary changes to offer things at a more affordable price point.....regardless handmade and bespoke ANYTHING will demand a premium, not just woodworking. I absolutely love your work and the fact that you calculated all the time and identified your labor rate. Too many DIY and creator videos miss this. It’s important to know. One thing you didn’t mention is any equipment or space needed to do your work, so even if a random homeowner wanted to make this themselves it would cost more, and that’s assuming an equal level of skill/know-how. Superb content and work keep it up!

Great project! I have made double and king size beds out of scaffolding boards and the 3” square spacers from between packs of timber at my local timber yard (they were free!). Cost me about £100 - £120 UK. All three so far have been “stolen” from me by my sons so I still need to make two for us.

Nice! In case you were wondering the wood you’re working with is hickory. Also i’m not sure that you check the moisture content of the word before assembling it. When you picked it up from the person you bought it off of she said there was I believe fertilizer on it? Most likely a bunch of moisture has been soaked into the wood and can lead to issues over time shrinkage. There are many pin meters that you can get. Also, your wood moisture wants to be around 5 to 8% moisture Contant for any sort of furniture, or in my case, flooring. Hope this helps your business.

Start with a good quality table saw. You can make every different kind of cut with it. Then go to second hand stores or garage sales and pick up tools that ol granddad used once and still good to go. Start smallish projects like making flower planters, dog houses or whatever. Think of making 5 - 10 of whatever you make. By the tenth time you make the same design the project will take 1/10 the time you did for the first piece. Repetition is your best friend. After that project profits can pay for any new tool you want. Easy peasy. Have fun with it.

quick tip on how you can remove those "broken head" nails out. -when enough of the of the nail is sticking out, like when you punched it out before running it through the planer -use some wire cutter pliers to gently pinch the nail. make sure the smooth side or the pliers are facing the wood. -leave enough clearance between the board and pliers so that you can squeeze your hammer or nail pry bar between them -you will need to apply just enough force on the pliers to keep them from slipping and to not cut through the nail. -now just pry the nail out, you're essentially using the pliers as new "nail head". hope you can interpret and implement this!!!!
@davidsnyder3799
@davidsnyder3799 2 года назад
This is one of the tips I that I wanted to be sure made its way into the comments. "End cutters", aka bullnose cutters, or nippers are also great alternatives to the "side cutters". End cutters have a nose that can serve as a fulcrum to roll away from the nail and draw it out. An old putty knife can be placed under the nose to minimize denting the wood. Don't use a good putty knife (or your 12" taping knife) for this task. Another tip is to use a pin-punch instead of a nailset. A pin-punch will have the same diameter of shaft for an inch or more of its total length. This avoids making a hole any larger than necessary, while driving the nail deeper than the reach of the nailset. With a set of pin-punches, the perfect size punch can be selected to provide enough strength and force for the task. It can usually be slightly smaller than the diameter of the nail. Follow the path of the nail with the pin-punch as it pushes the nail through.

if you have a nail that breaks into the wood and you can't get it off, get a plug cutting bit and cut a plug where the nail is stuck, the nail will come off with the plug, then simply plug the hole back with a dowel from a scrap piece. also when you use pallet wood for projects, get yourself a pin pointing metal detector and scan your wood for Embedded nails before you cut them on a table saw, planer or jointer, trust me it is worth it.

Safety note: never, never, never cut through a nail like that if you are hooked up to an extraction system. The sawdust becomes aerosolized and turns the collector into a very powerful bomb. You should take care even if you’re cutting without an extraction system. Make sure the shop is clean and there is no buildup of dust in the air. Sparks + sawdust = death. The top turned out great and I’m genuinely pleased you were able to get a good price for your work. But I think you underestimated the cost: tools, shop space, vehicle payment, electricity, insurance, gas, etc. There are a million and one hidden costs!

A "Copy Cat". I'm 37 and I've had access to a my own cabinet shops since the age of about seven or eight and that's when I started carpentries because my dad is a Master Carpenter though I don't like to refer to myself as such. I've been making tables chairs desks cabinets other little trinkets out of pallet wood since I was a little kid. I started doing river tables before RU-vid even became a thing. But here's the kicker. Other people and I mean many other people did all of those things way before I did. I'm not the first or the second or even the thousandths. What this guy is doing is not special or unique in any way. This guy also seems to be kind of an idiot. He gets lucky that he doesn't screw his builds up because he doesn't seem to have the ability to see problems in real time or anticipate them like most remedial carpenters can do. I was dumbfounded over the fact that he couldn't even build his own base or legs for the table instead bought a cheap set from Amazon to install them himself and then on top of that didn't even have the perceptive ability to watch where the f*** he was walking and ended up breaking them. I personally if this was my build would have fabricated and welded my own design of legs out of whatever particular metal that I chose to use within my shop and even then I likely wouldn't charge more than $450 for this table. That could change a little bit depending upon the design of the base and dependent upon the particular metal I use and how many welds that I have to do so it's a possibility you could maybe see $525 as a tag but certainly no more than that. I do not take advantage of my customers It's how I was raised and it is part of my moral foundation that I will never waver on because I hate hypocrites and so even if I found an individual willing to pay $1,000 or 12 or 1500 or whatever, I wouldn't accept it.

A tip for keeping the slab flat at glue up. Your table saw will never be exactly 90 degrees and if you rip both halves the same way up, the say 3/4 degree error will compound to 1 and a half degrees resulting in a non flat finished slab. So, instead, every other board (or the second of two) over and the discrepancy will then cancel out. Flat glue up, presto.

Absolutely beautiful desk. Just a question out of curiosity. Why did you only glue the parts together and not used a pin to hole construction? Thx for the video!

You coulda cut the cracked part of the table off and reglue it would be much simpler and probably looks better, then also recess the width of the steel plate on the legs into the bottom of the table where it is fastened 👍🏽

There's no way a table like that is worth even $100, let alone $1200.

I don't doubt someone paid $1200 for it and good on the woodworker for being able to get that price. However, I don't think my conscience would ever let me charge someone that amount of money for such a desk. Obviously, I make a poor businessman.

@@rickborrettjr6810 in a few months when the natural expansion of 2 types of wood bends it at best, cracks it at worse. it will be worth nothing

A pair of end cutters does a great job of pulling stubborn nails. Controlled pressure on the cutter grabs the nail really well, and the curved jaw rolls around to make a smooth pull.

Now I wanna see you take 4 or 5 pallets and make a music studio desk out of it. Then it will DEFINITELY be worth more than $1,200 not to mention theres a much bigger market for these types of desks and surprisingly not alot of competition.

It depends on his hourly rate. When I do side jobs I charge $80/per man hour, $120 if it is after 1700. This guy had over 11 hours of work into this project, so if he charges a similar rate that I would charge then he only made $100 or so.

I fully appreciate your skills, craftsmanship, and ability to sell your projects, though the issue I take is with the cost breakdown: overhead was not accounted for. Overhead should consider the cost of the sandpaper, the cost of electricity used in the project, cost of paper cups used in the epoxy and glue-up, as well as any tool maintenance. Those costs could potentially lower your hourly profit by $10-$20 an hour.
@tibor29
@tibor29 2 года назад
lol no way. All the costs you mentioned are completely negligible Sandpaper? Maybe $10. Electricity? Probably literally around $0.50. Paper cups? $2. Tool maintenance? This one is hard to estimate, definitely pretty insignificant as well though. He included all the major costs in the breakdown, everything else is peanuts not worth talking about.

Loved the video, the idea, the effort; but I recommend putting things together onsite (1. It will fit better on your car, 2. Better chances of not hitting the walls.) Keep up the the great work! I learned a lot from your video.
