Turning A Walnut Honey Dipper On A Midi Lathe - Book Builds Episode 1

Turning a Walnut honey dipper is a fairly simple process and can be done on all sizes of lathes - even a midi lathe like mine.
This is the first episode in my Book Build series where I find projects from wood working books from the early 2000's or older and recreate them - with some minor, or possibly major, alterations to the plans.
This week I had to go with a project on the lathe as my bandsaw is still broken and my drill press is nearly dead!
The video covers my process for measurements, layout, turning and finishing the honey dipper.

You do great work. I like that you take them to market...physically. Like I mentioned before..that is one thing I've left out for over 2 years now...or almost 2 years. I have to get my items in the truck and do the weekends. It's tough as you know.

Interesting approach to making a honey dipper. Who would have thought it could be so visually interesting. Still loving your editing. Another great video Mike.

Thanks Javi! I don't eat enough honey. I should really be swapping it out of my diet in place of sugar!

Thanks Robert! They're my go to piece when I want to turn something but only have scrap stock left and don't feel like turning a pen with it.

That was awesome! Nice little project. Sorry about your band saw. Many blessings to you and your Channel!

Thank you Tracy! No worries on the bandsaw, it'll be back up and running again soon. I'm hoping to add a table saw to the shop soon as well so that I can work on more than just lathe / bandsaw related projects!

Neat little project. Nice way to spend a few hours.

Thanks Jim - in a few hours you should be able to push out a dozen of these. I think my normal production time for cut, turn and finish is 15 minutes per dipper now.

Thanks Dana! Complete career path change over the past 2 years... Shut my web / graphic design company down at the start of last year! I still do it part time for a local sign shop but no more Hyphen or Freelance work. Glad to see you found me again! 👍👍

what woods do you recommend for the honey dippers?
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 6 лет назад
Thanks! They're a fun little project and sell quick at markets around here - honey is very popular right now. I used Walnut for this one - but have turned various dippers in Maple, Ambrosia maple, Apple, and Pecan. The harder the wood the better. I seal them with a "wood butter" I make - 4 parts butcher block mineral oil, 1 part beeswax.
@OJWoodworkingCrafts
@OJWoodworkingCrafts 6 лет назад
wow that's really cool, so I'm guessing the grooves help to pick up the honey?

Mike I love how you shoot your videos, what camera do you use?
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 6 лет назад
Thanks James. I use 2 different cameras - my main is a Canon T5i and my secondary is my Google Pixel2 phone. I'm starting the use the Pixel2 a little more and am working at creating some tracks for it around the shop so that I can get some moving shots in 4k and then use pan and zoom a little more during some of my editing. I'm looking at possibly creating a few videos with a little less "editing" over the next little while - need to save some time as I currently shoot for about 4 or 5 hours to get all of my shots and then 5 or 6 hours to edit. I'd like to get this down to 2 hours to shoot and 2 - 3 hours to edit, at least until I have a greater following and my channel is maybe paying me back a little to make up for the time away from making product!
@mamabearssheshedtracykeato6941
That's a really cool project. A fun one to boot... Does resin interact with honey? I've always wondered if you could make a honey dipper from resin.
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 5 лет назад
Thanks Tracy! Resin shouldn't react with the honey in any way. Once cured pretty much any resin is "food safe". I've been considering making some honey dippers from hybrid blanks... maybe an upcoming video!?
