Turning an Old Camper frame into a TINY HOUSE ON WHEELS

We are going tiny for a little while! My dad and I built the entire thing and Jamie and I have been living in it for over a week now. I have plenty of footage of the build and I will absolutely do a tour video!
I started with a salvaged (but in great shape) RV camper frame that I got off of Facebook marketplace for $1,500. No solid plan, just some rough ideas and we were able to get it done!
In this video, my dad and I frame and insulate the subfloor which will serve as the base for our tiny house on wheels. We used 2x4s 24" on center to save weight and to give us more height to work with.
Thanks for watching!

Awesome I have a 28×8 wood framed TH with 2 axels and I'm afraid it my be too heavy. How much those you TH weigh on your double axel. How many lugs on each tire?

Did you have to save VIN for frame to register?

Can you put a small barn on the frame for a home?
@shanester8712

I know this is an older video. But since camper frame outriggers are not spaced with any rhythm or reason when it comes to conventional framing. Did you just frame 8 ft sections and just put blocking between joist to attach to outriggers?

Awesome !! Thanks for posting . I’m doing the same thing to a old camper . What did you use for the bottom of the floor that is sitting on the frame ?? How did you connect the floor to the frame ? Did you lag bolt it at all?
@LazyLabAcres
@LazyLabAcres 3 года назад
2x4s and 3/4 ply and yes it is lag bolted to the frame

Love the idea! We got a really old travel trailer that will need SERIOUS remodeling and fixing. Our initial idea was to restore it. But I've always loved tiny homes as well. Question: do problems arise when the title of the "vehicle" says it was a travel trailer and now is a tiny house. Just wanting to ask, just so I know what direction to take with our travel trailer.
@LazyLabAcres
@LazyLabAcres 3 года назад
The laws surrounding tiny houses on wheels are extremely gray right now. I would advise you call the highway patrol for whichever state you may be in and ask them for guidance on the trailer aspect of it (they might not know either though). Another option might be to talk to a company that moves mobile homes to move the tiny house if you want to avoid some of the extra registration steps. They would carry all of the proper DOT permits and such to move it. If you plan on traveling with the tiny house, then checking in on all of the registration laws would be the way to go.

I would have drilled a few doorknob holes you can plug back up but have accessable for sny future leaks so water can drain out. We had a leak we couldnt gind but it filled the floor under the sheetsood snd insulation was drenched snd not knowing for i fo t know how long it was leaking( it was a puncture in the toof from a branch snd was following framing to the floor,with no rvidence it was happening , until the floor got squishy in one spot , when we opened it up, it eas full of water. So i did a few of those holes to drain it. Still had to replace insulation but now could use styrofoam i stead of fiber. But still wouldnt want water not to be snle to drain. Also put screening on bottom of holes. To prevent mice getting it. But we yested it the next rain and it worked great, then we fixed the gash in the roof. Luckily, it didnt soak the roif or eall insulation, it was just following the wood framing , sp the ceiling and walls didnt get wrecked too. I dont know why they arent built to accommodate and unexpected roof, seal or side damage, which happens slot when people dont clear a drive through or some such low clearance. May look like not damage, but it often opens up sealed seams of roof and wall.

Love this build. Outstanding job. I am getting ready to do the same thing. Just out of curiosity any idea what your overall weight was. On my trailer I have 2 tandem axles that is rated for 10K lbs. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When we enforce frame it makes it stand up to all extra weight , but,,but,,,, big BUT those dinky little RV Axel's are not made to handle 20 000 pounds or whatever it weights full load ?? Sure drive slow it might make it a few miles to final home set up spot , but I would not trust those Axel's for very long or at very high speed driving. These RV frames are so weak and when your reinforced it now all this weight is bearing down hard on those weak Axel's . I'm sure once it's in final place you can just level it with supports and all good. But those weak dinky Axel's and little dinky wheel bearings will not last long with all this extra weight. I love it. RV should be built strong like this , this is like a. Home , built solid.

what was that material you put on the bottom of the floor frame? i noticed you didnt paint it. are you not concerned about how that material will hold up in the elements, moisture humidity and such long term? im asking because im building one and havent made up my mind what to put on the bottom for this very reason. thanks

I guess a “camper” means something different than I’m familiar, but isn’t the frame for a towable trailer? Campers go on the back of trucks.

Hey brother, good stuff. Why the luan on the bottom? Also, don't you think you should have done a vapor barrier underneath the subfloor? You could have probably Tyvek taped the 2x4's overlapping the foam board. I'm not being critical, just thinking out loud. Stay safe brother.
@LazyLabAcres
@LazyLabAcres 3 года назад
Vapor barrier is never a bad idea, we just didn't think it was necessary since it stays very dry under there. Plywood underlayment was just to keep the rigid insulation in place. Thanks for watching & commenting!
