Matt Dye and Adam Keith of Land & Legacy are on Adams home farm in southern Missouri discussing how he plans on turning a clear cut from a logging operation into a bedding area for deer in timber country! On top of the income from the logging, with proper management this area will provide great food and cover for deer, turkey and tons of other wildlife species in the ozark mountains!

I work on the Mississippi river and if you get close to hitting something, a bunch of old timers say "you have to make it look worse before it gets better". Basically just meaning you have to do what you have to do no matter what to get yourself in better shape. I correlate this to habitat. It looks terrible after a burn or logging at first but it's what is needed in order to get it looking better in the future.

I'm dealing with that right now. I just met with my forester. Told him my plans and was only doing this for the wild life as well as the health of the forest. So we're going to be cutting the pulpwood and only taking the less desirable trees. I have 195 acres. But we're going to only do 97 acers of thinning this year. I'm probably messing up but I just can't force myself to do it all at 1 time. I told the forester I'm not trying to get rich. I didn't want my land raped. And every dime I do make will be put right back into the land in other improvements. For the wildlife

I had a long 6 acre sprip area clear cut. Put a 2.5 acre food plot strip up middle. It shocking the regeneration on maple and popular trees. 4 to 6 feet in first year. Deer removed 50 to 60 % over the winter. Time to see what happens in yr 2 :)

Very cool! Those maple and poplar are prolific spouters! You might consider running a fire through it if you plan to keep it in that early successional type habitat.

I am in year one. The deer are hitting it hard. How was your year 2 ?
@travissmith-wz5nc
@travissmith-wz5nc Год назад
@@ricks7432 hard. We also had a drought yr. The deer really pound the re gen and are in and out of the plot all times of the day.

Not yet. We filmed this segment last summer. We are planning to revisit it this year after it has had part of a growing season and potentially a fire ran through it! Stay tuned!
