Turning my $60 dresser into an entire mortgage payment! A full MCM restoration

My Roman Empire 🥹 or my first edition Charizard? This piece was my first ever mid century modern restoration, completed in 2022, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. Now i am a collector of Brasilia pieces 🤣 so you can say I’m regretting selling the piece!
Here’s how i did it 👇🏼
+ used Klean strip to chemically strip off the old paint
+ sanded off any remaining finish with 180 grit using my @surfprepsanding 3x4 electric ray
+ hand sanded the arches with 220 grit
+ used Mohawk medium brown wiping stain
+ applied a few coats of mohawk EZ vinyl sealer
+ applied Mohawk raw umber glaze
+ sealed with ever coats of semi gloss lacquer!
This bad boy sold for $1,400! I’m soooo happy with how it turned out and I regret selling it everyday hahaha.

I have seen some of your videos and I have a question. After sanding the wood, should I put anything before the pre catalysed lacquer (spray)? I need to restore some wood cabinets in my kitchen and I wanted help! Here they do terrible jobs. Keep up with the good work ❤ from Portugal

It’s not Brasilia , it’s a Brazilian cherries wood

Actually, in the advertisement for the piece, the manufacturer Broyhill, gave a style name of "Brasilia" to the dresser. "Brasilia" doesn't refer to what kind of wood was used. It clearly says that the piece was made of Walnut. 😊

You Google it, most every piece has a brand marking somewhere on it. We own a consignment shop so we have to figure it out.

If you know mid-century furniture these pieces are easy to spot! There is a lot of mid-century furniture out there, but certain lines, designers, manufacturers are pretty popular. Broyhill Brasilia is one of more well known lines and very pricey!

You can't imagine how swamped the good restorers are. My best friend worked in a workshop of restorers, they had orders for 3 months. A lot of people know and value the pieces of furniture they have or buy.

You literally rescued this!!! I can’t even tell you how much it frustrates me to see people deface incredible pieces by slapping cheap paint on gorgeous solid wood making the piece look like some cheap trash from home goods. You brought it back to its original glory😅and the way you went out of your way to replace the missing original hardware satisfied my soul.

I’d just like to add that people should consider how much cost and work goes into un- painting a piece before they willy nilly slap a messy coat of ugly coloured paint on a beautiful piece of wood anything.

This is one of the few restorations that I REALLY LIKE. So many times people take things like this and paint them gray or white, and you did the complete opposite, hooray! When they paint is heartbreaking to me, as I love the look of natural wood. You did an AMAZING job.

The thyroid handles again! There’s a guy on IG who did the same dresser that was painted blue. The handles are the exact shape and size of a thyroid gland!

They are actually designed after the oficial residence of the president of Brazil. It’s called “Palácio da Alvorada” and the handles are just a specific snippet of the main columns of the building.

🤣I have to laugh at this comment because it’s exactly what I keep saying. Painting over wood is just criminal. Then she wonders why it didn’t go with her decor???When a colleague of mine remarked that she was concerned that her husband was enjoying his wine too often, I responded by saying..”if my spouse insisted that I paint all the solid natural oak trims, baseboard and beautiful staircase in my house white, I’d hit the bottle too!!!!

This is why I say you have to really research whatever furniture you purchase and just take the time to know what it is that you have too many people buy or find old furniture and just slept some paint on it instead of restoring it. Fashion is funny. We become familiar with something, it becomes part of the furniture (sorry, had to do that!). Then we see something that gets our attention and out goes the familiar. We forget how much we loved it in the first place and its unique beauty. Then along cones someone and brings that old piece back to life and we once again see its beauty. I know people who treat people like that. Treasure beauty and never allow yourself to forget what make you fall in love in the first place.

This is exactly what so many want. Color paints and updates are pretty but most people just want a piece of time and memories to add. Something classic when it comes to furniture because trends never last but furniture can last for hundreds of years when cared for.
