You have a phone with 12GB ram, your test is meaningless because even with the option on, you'll never use virtual ram until you fill the 12 gb RAM up first.

@michaelkeudel8770

@dolphin1346 how much physical ram is in the phone, what version OS your run, how much storage space is available on the internal rom space. Those factors will determine if virtual ram will benefit you or not. I turned mine off, didn't notice any difference except extra free phone space.

Either you all live in the past... As in very VERY long ago. Or you don't know how UNIX works. Or you are too bored to check the use of the swap file in your Android phone. 2 days since last reboot, and my swap file has 3GB used and my 12GB RAM S23 Ultra has 6 GB of RAM in use. You are so living in the past, you haven't even checked how much of your page file Windows 10 uses. Read up before posting
@michaelkeudel8770
@michaelkeudel8770 Год назад
@costasachilleos6387 swap is slow, internal memory isn't, if your RAM is underutilized and going to swap BEFORE its full, it's useless. And writing to your flash memory needlessly wears it out.

I got better battery life with it off. Also I think the better test is how many apps your phone can keep running without restarting the app state instead of video rendering which will depend more on the cpu/gpu than the ram.

I think Samsung has reason to include this option, and it's on by default too. I think they're smart enough and has done researching before giving us that option. I have Z fold 4, i leave it to default, and i don't have any issue, no lag, everything running smoothly, so i found no reason to turn it off and i have enough storage to store my documents, files. So, the best practice is leave it to default, unless you are running out of storage

Been testing this on the s23u, 12GB variant. Only difference I can feel with it off, it's slower in loading my modes and routines after a restart. Overall performance and feel, navigation, multitasking, video editing, no difference at all, same exact results. Battery, no difference. Ram benchmark is inconsistent but had multipe runs over the day. On average, the sequencial read speed is higher with ram plus off, but random read speed is lower, the rest are more or less equal, no matter if it's on or off. Personally I just keep it on at 8GB, as it came by default.

Depends on whether someone is using their phone primarily for gaming or not. If their phone is more than 2 years old and is running slowly prior to it being on, or perhaps if their memory and or storage is maxed/a LOT free. I'm still using a S10+ and the 128Gb internal and external storage are both at 96% occupancy, it's been used very heavily and a lot of things run slowly and the battery is starting to take much longer to charge and dies near 40% faster than a new one would.

Well, without boring you all with numbers i was curious and tried with my new z flip 4 (888+ gen1) it has 8GB RAM/128GB storage. Based on cdpt rough tests without 4GB RamPlus the performance are more than double compared with the tests with RamPlus enabled but...not replicable. I mean that when i switched to ramplus back again to no plus and did the same tests the results was totally different! Speaking about Geekbench 5 that is a more exaustive test suite the results are pretty similar in both conditions even if ..whoever knows GB5 knows that even it gives different results every time :-) So what i deducted from this? 1) it is obvious that without the virtual memory the rough memory ops. are faster in ram than in ram+virtual ram but in the reality the meanings of RamPlus is intended for who don't care to close apps even once a day just to recover one of the 20/30 apps running in background. People with 8Gb Ram or more could avoid enable this feature because i don't think it will speed up the overall everyday use. More probable it will a little bit decrease the performance but nothing of hugely noticeable. Then, in the end, for me is a useless feature.

I thought the wear and tear issue for SSDs was already fixed if not improved?Plus its not very often your phone will be forced to use virtual ram unless you're lazy and find closing apps too much of a burden or you run applications that require more memory and CPU power than your phone is capable of sustaining for long periods. As per my own experience, I've only noticed reduced performance in memory intensive sessions like gaming when internal storage is above 100gb/128gb. Note that I have 6GB physical RAM and a RAM PLUS of 6GB. On or off I can't tell the difference in performance and battery life unless the storage is above 100gb/128gb

Interesting video & findings. My observation is that Linux has tendency to use available RAM. However, it seems that current memory utilisation display Apps are not showing true picture. Why I reach this conclusion? If you observe with or without RAM Plus Option when you check your RAM utilisation, it's well below available RAM of 12 GB but test results are indicating that with RAM Plus enabled tasks are performed faster. My logic is that with current SoCs there might be enough processing power and when you throw read write tasks it is leveraging RAM Plus feature to complete it faster. Is there any way to check RAM utilisation during this task (not before or after but real-time)? Because before & after memory utilisation is well below. But during read/ write or render is it leveraging that RAM plus/ swap to complete task faster? P.S. I still prefer to take performance hit by disabling RAM Plus to protect long term storage health.

This works for 6gb ram below till 8gb, it makes your phone faster helping the actual ram with the virtual ram... theres no need to argue with, samsungs manufacturers and techs did not just put that in there if that will harm the phone.. a decades of improvements

It is automatically adjusted depending upon how much is free on your actual memory, I would leave it that way, only run 2GB over 70% internal max usage. If you change the value yourself, you're going to slow down your phone. It doesn't affect the battery but 5%, but it does slow your phone if you use it for an additional 8Gb! If you already have 6+ internal memory, I would turn it off, dont even use it at 2GB in that case! There are only a handful of phones that are over 12GB that aren't pure shit chips! ANYTHING PAST THIS IS JUST RECOMMENDATION... One Plus 9/Nord, Z+, any Galaxy 22+ and higher series, most 2022 5G's, ROG 5 Ultimate, X7 Max (again 5G phones, but not all) and MAYBE the IQ00 9 T/P! There are iPhones and Nokia's, but not really on the scale of Galaxy/Moto/ASUS/ROG quality.. Yes there are others, but these are the basic mass production with high quality 12+ RAM! I mean come on, 90-120fps without breaking a sweat at 4K (and higher)? You won't need more than 12GB for years to come, just as your PC doesn't NEED more that 16, though 32-64GB is nice to brag about and you can be a slacker and keep a dozen high end running in the background (though you really shouldn't), but it's like leaving all of the drivers a few years out of date after awhile!
@jr_Linux
@jr_Linux Год назад
Lets also remember it depends on how many apps you keep open at once and how long your using your phone and stuff. People are mostly ignorant when it comes to tech. The reason people run 32gb on pc is alot of people that stream which takes alot and takes having multiple applications open at once not even including how much ram windows itself hogs

I doubt virtual ram would run at the same frequency as the actual physical ram the CPU is probably having a bottle neck anf the virtual ram can't run at the same frequency ( you could compair this to having one stick 16gb 3600mhz ram in your computer and adding an 8gb 2666 mhz ram stick in your computer yes you have more ram but now it runs slower this most likely is not the case just the best example I could think of on why the "performance" is not better with virtual ram)
