Turning Olivewood 00g Plugs On A Wood Lathe

I lost one of my plugs and figured rather than buy a new pair I should just turn my own. I used some Olivewood serving trays that I bought at HomeSense and make a pair of 00g plugs. They turned on the lathe rather easily and ended up sanding out really nice.
If I could change one thing about them for next time, I'd choose a better area of the wood with some more figure / wood grain.

I bought a smaller tool rest for my smaller, single barrel pens that I make and it was the best decision I ever made. I love mine!
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 6 лет назад
I'll probably wait until I get a new lathe, that all depends on how many orders I get for these though... If I have to make a few pairs every week then the new tool rest is going to be a must have!

Thanks! Not for everyone but I see turners making small spindles all the time and I'm not quite at that level yet so this was some practice for that... I'll get there someday!

The one time that I wore wooden plugs, they were porous enough to get stuck in my ears. It was not fun getting them out. How are yours doing? Have you considered using a CA finish and polishing them up?
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 6 лет назад
Thanks for the questions. Mine are doing great, haven't had any issues so far 🤞! I stay with a natural finish on them since adding a CA finish would then present something that would cause, for lack of a better term, "lobe cheese". With the natural finish they stay clean and only need to be taken out and rinsed off occasionally.
@williamthornhill609
@williamthornhill609 6 лет назад
Lobe cheese is definitely a problem. I suppose I just got my hands on something that shouldn't have been used to make plugs with.

Very cool project. Question though: do you have to use a specific finish to avoid any kind of infection or anything?
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 6 лет назад
You need to be careful on the type of wood used for the plugs, some woods will not agree with some people. As for the finish I've purchased plugs with no finish, plugs with acrylic or varathane finish.... Neither one caused any issues. I personally use a beeswax and mineral oil finish. It penetrates, seals and protects the wood from moisture issues.
@mamabearssheshedtracykeato6941
Fantastic job! I love the new studs. Have you ever tried to wear the double flares? Those types of accidents are less likely to happen with those particular styles. I am curious as to what you put on the wood after completing them?
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 6 лет назад
Thanks Tracy! 👍 I had some silicone and some steel double flares but they were too narrow, I have thick ear lobes... I am looking at turning some though, I like the look of them. As for the finish it a mix of beeswax and mineral oil.

What kind of adhesive do you use to keep the sandpaper on the wood
@sleavesleather
@sleavesleather 7 месяцев назад
Hey Bryan! I just watched the video again as it’s been a long time since I uploaded, I’m not sure what part of the video your comment is referencing. The only sanding portion I could see was the final sanding of each piece and that was just me holding various grits by hand while the lathe was spinning. If you could provide me with a little more context I might have a different response…
@ericofadel
@ericofadel 5 лет назад
Hey, Knot, what kind of paste have you used to buff it? Also, to which grit have you reached before buffing?

It was an Easy Wood Tools carbide tip, there’s a few different versions out there depending on your budget. Just search “Easy wood tools” on Google and you should find various tools like this.
