Turning Out Cows & Turning Out Chickens!

It's time to turn out some chickens and some cows! It's that time of the flock where we transition the baby chickens from the front half of the house to the entire house. We usually do this around day 7 or day 8 of a flock. Sometimes it depends on the vaccination program of the chickens and sometimes it just depends on the weather.
We also have a pasture that has been sitting empty for a few months now. The ryegrass is really starting to grow. We decided to move some cattle pairs to this pasture to let them enjoy that nice, fresh grass. Had a little surprise when we saw 27 turkeys while were checking the pasture fence.

I worked on a large pheasant farm operation and my boss was huge on “bio security”. He had different boots that he would wear from the layers to young/growing flock. We also had to dip the bottoms of our shoes in a chemical before entering each building. After each flock went through a building we power washed all the equipment and flushed them with a cleaning agent. I’m not sure what you do but we always had good success with a low death rate and I believe it’s because he took the “bio security” seriously.

We have a lot of those same protocols in place as well. They do greatly help prevent brining in outside challenges.

Man I know exactly where they are our farm used to be right beside there that Eric purchased back in early 2000’s there were not any turkeys back in the 90’s around there in the late 90’s we raised 8 Wild Turkeys polks in a covered cage for a few months until old enough to turn out I think I’d have to say it was a success now I just need to find a small plot around there to hunt them lol

Wow, thats pretty cool. We have been seeing them the last few years here. That's the most we've ever seen though. I'd say you probably had a hand in getting those birds in that area.

I am interested in the next videos especially getting in the chicken business I’ve always been told by the old farmers in my area when I got in the chickens “it’s a interested business to be in” lol

@@southerndirt9589 Awesome! One piece of advice if you don’t already understand depreciation make sure you do before you close. One of the biggest mistakes I see farmers make is borrowing money on a farm for 15 years and depreciating it in 7 years. You’ll get nailed on taxes after those first 7 years.

Where did y’all get that migration fences? I hate mine! Shelves👎🏻
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 4 месяца назад
They came from Sephnos. They are working on a new V Shaped migration fence. Some of the holes in it were a little too big and a few baby chickens were getting through. They are redesigning it to eliminate that from happening. I have been very happy with these fences I have now though

I raise 120,000 each flock and Eric raises 120,000 each flock. Lots of birds. We usually raise about 6-7 flocks each year.

Great video fellers, I'm not sure which is more time consuming having a poultry farm or a dairy
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 4 месяца назад
I’ve never worked on a dairy farm but I would imagine it’s a little more time consuming. Unless our downtime is really low we at least get a break!

How do y’all deal with the rats. Just poison???
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 4 месяца назад
Yes, the company sends someone out before we get chickens and they put out rat bait. We also put out additional ourselves. You have to stay on top of the rats and mice or they can quickly get out of hand.

Does your integrator not care that you guys record and upload video content of the birds?
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 4 месяца назад
I didn't really ask. For a long time we didn't upload anything with birds in it. I looked through my contract though and it doesn't say that we can't.
@Rancho_W
@Rancho_W 4 месяца назад
@FarmerHunt I've followed you guys for a while now and I've always wondered. I'd like to upload content on how we grow the birds, but there's to many people that don't understand and think that we do is such a horrible thing. I'd be afraid to get my contract canceled if the videos got to much attention from those types of people.
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 4 месяца назад
We are selective with what we will post. I think you are correct in a lot of people don't really understand how their chickens are raised. That's part of the reason we decided to start doing some chicken videos. Look through your contract and see if there is anything in it about pictures and videos. For the longest time I thought our contract had something in it until I took the time to read through it.

How have you guys been dealing with bird flu is it leaving you alone or is it in the area?
@FarmerHunt
@FarmerHunt 4 месяца назад
Luckily bird flu hasn't been an issue for us here lately. There have been some cases far away over the years but nothing too close. For the most part, I think it mostly affects the layers and the hens and not as much the broilers.

@@stephencochran5879 Do you ever feel like they put off too much heat? Eric was actually looking at upgrading to some tube heaters but a couple people said they give off so much heat that the chickens tend to stay on the walls in smaller houses
@stephencochran5879
@stephencochran5879 4 месяца назад
I don't think so. If you see they are getting to hot in one zone just lower your temp. I grow 9 to 10 pound birds so I don't have as many in my houses. I got friends with the same size houses with the tube heaters and they don't have any trouble
