For wild wolves you're right because wild wolf packs are typically the parents and their pups in a nuclear family situation where the parents are dominant and the pups are submissive but there's still overwhelming evidence for the alpha omega hierarchy in captive wolves. There's over 20 years observation and study of this phenomenon. Also, even in the situation you provided, it makes genuine tactical sense to allow the weakest, slowest people to set the pace of a long march and have the strongest members either coming up from the rear to protect from ambushes or among the group to provide immediate assistance and and command during a fight. Dogs are more than capable of understanding the outright advantage of basic tactics because that's what lets them survive. In a wild pack a parent would lead, the pups would be in the center and another parent would be in the back or among the pups incase something happens and that just makes primal sense.
