Modern Pixar is one that is questioned by modern society for their quality compared to the glory days, but the truth is it's not all bad.

if it was the film about young boys, no one would said it was cringe. people's reaction to turning red is showing how girls' interests, hobbies and struggles are considered cringie and bad, and boys' are not. i loved it, cause its authentic, made with soul. you can feel how its embarrassing moment were well known and felt by the author. it's not just caricature of young girls made by corporate men in costumes. so it felt real

Absolutely. Also the assumption of "if I can't relate to it, most people can't"... I think it's relatable to many women, it was a wonderful representation of a girl's teenage years. I never considered this cringe.

Well TMNT: Mutant Mayhem is gen z centric movie. They weren't excepted being called cringe by new & old TMNT fans.

I think it would depend on the portrayal. If the film accurately depicted all the things I used to enjoy as a 13y/o boy, it would be super cringe, for all the same reasons as this film. And I don’t think anyone is saying “girls’ interests, hobbies and struggles are… bad,” just because of the cringe. Cringey and bad are not synonymous

Male puberty can definitely be cringy and uncomfortable. Imagine a plot point about dude's first morning wood?

This film excels at portraying what it was like to be at preadolescence. It can get awkward and cringy, but also insanely nostalgic and heartfelt. We need more films like these at an age where preteens are constantly pressured to “grow up”.

This movie is incredibly relatable. It's a hard thing to want to make your parents proud of you, but also wanting to be true to yourself and who you are, regardless if they disapprove. A powerful pill to swallow, but one that needs to be done in order to heal and grow.

No doubt to the Disney hate train that unfortunately was at its strongest that year considering 2 Dreamworks films came out around that time that grabbed more attention due to being released in theaters, The Bad Guys and especially Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. And even the theatrical release of their only film that year Strange World, being a box-office bomb furthered fueled the hatred towards the studio.

I absolutely loved this movie because it was cringy. It showed the struggles, interests, and life of a coming-of-age girl, who felt like she had it perfect with her family and school life before she started growing up. No one in this movie was the hero or the villain, just people with different viewpoints.

@@user-dy1dz1lz9t Doesn't the film show her mom's disapproval at some of the things she does? Doesn't she have to push back? There was a point in the film where she firmly says "I'm changing, Mom." She also has to check in with her mom to see if that's okay.

Thing is, this was probably one of the first Pixar films whose target audience was not "everyone and anyone." This was a love letter to Domee Shi's childhood, which was a very specific time and a very specific place. Naturally, people who are outside the nostalgic target base wouldn't get it as easily as someone like me, who was literally the same age and grew up in the Toronto suburbs at the same time. I will say, for as niche as the audience who appreciated this movie was, it was DEAD ON in representing the early-00s Canadian junior high school culture, the characters, and how young teen girls fixate and act. 13yo girls ARE cringe, and the film portrays that without shame, which is amazing considering how most media these days like to portray young teen girls as baby adults. I'm glad you gave this a fair shot. I feel like a lot of guys didn't.

I was the opposite of Mei, growing up. I'm not from Toronto, but I am an Asian Canadian. I put most of my focus on schoolwork because I felt the need to push myself after I was diagnosed with a learning disability, and both of my parents took the time to help me. Whenever I watch shows or movies, I always prefer the smart characters with a one-track mind.

I grew up in France in the early 2000s, and we had lots of things in common: the tamagoshi craze, the boys bands (tho for us it was more female pop singers, but same vibe), the way kids acted, the colorful fashion... something that I loved but physically pained me is that Mei Lin has THE EXACT SAME drawing style as I when I started to draw. It is really funny to think we had a lot in common despite the cultural differences and an ocean between us :)

Honestly, while I'm incredibly critical of Disney's main studio, I don't think Pixar has fallen off in the same way! Pixar has changed a lot, but outside of lightyear I still love their more recent works. Turning Red, Soul, and Luca are all films I really enjoyed and appreciate. Heck, even if Onward wasn't great, it's a much more enjoyable watch than Wish, Strange World, or Ralph Breaks the Internet

I loved this movie and hate how people keep whining about how stupid and crappy or "InNaPrOpRiAtE" it is. It's genuinely funny and cute, but also touching and as a Canadian I love seeing Canadian representation. Aside from this and Scott Pilgrim, Hollywood only brings up Canada as a joke, and the rest of the time they just use Vancouver or Toronto as a backdrop for "Anywhere, USA" and don't respect Canadians at all.

The messaging and themes are all there and resonate on a deeper level I imagine for most females, but it’s definitely not a film I can connect with personally as an 18 year old guy. It is a solid film tho, just clearly not meant for me or meant for me to enjoy or connect with the same way I do with several other Pixar films.

I absolutely love Turning Red, and there is more ways to relate to Mei than be a middle schooler or a girl....I live for similar issues with my folks growing up, my Mon hated the music we listen to and the bands (been metal dudes me and my brother on a Latin American country), plus me been an artist and wanted to pursuit a career on arts instead of a NORMAL JOB, so many discussions remind me to the ones Mei had with her mom, heck I even nostalgic about that era, despite I hated boy bands back there, but now I even listen to some Backstreet boys songs and Britney Spears with fondest , I have watch turning red countless of times and will continue doing, in my humble opinion EASILY the best film of that era of Pixar.

Turning Red is a great Pixar movie, I should give them props for this, in other words, so much respect, and do you think it would've made more sense if this movie was actually released in 2002, instead of 2022, curse you COVID-19? Anyway, they shouldn’t criticize this movie, Luca, and Ruby Gillman, even though that last one was from DreamWorks, for their similarities, they're all great in their own ways, yet I'm starting to see the irony here between Mei and Ruby.

It's a great cringy 2000s-like film. It would be great to see it in theatres just like how Shrek 2 popped up again. It would be great to see more theatres re-air past movies as a way to really recapture the experience of customers watching old stuff with their friends. It's a great way to bond and strengthen their connections. I might have to grab my large DVD folder and fire up a film on my Xbox. We in the 2020s LOVE old stuff.

I enjoyed the movie first time with my mom, and we even saw the documentary afterwards and how the director had those experiences in her childhood. :) Rewatching it tho, I can kinda get the cringe part being a bit stale (especially underaged children tw3rking is bad and downright creepy. I thought people would’ve learned after the horrendous Powerpuff Girls 2016 reboot controversies) Other than just that reason, there’s clearly plot contrivances that really adds wrenches between the gears, like Mei’s mom could’ve briefly caught some of the red panda merchandise instead of finding out way later in the movie, and the most saddest scene where Mei attacked Tyler (her former bully who’s also a four town guy) was ruined by the scene later on for just comedic purposes. I clearly don’t have a problem with sad moments and comedy being mixed together as long as it’s done a clever and subtle way, and The Emperor’s New Groove did it perfectly, but same thing cannot be said with Mei, her friends and Tyler becoming besties again without a scene between where they apologize. As Cyrus The Great I think described it best in his review of the movie: “It literally mixes so many generic overused tropes all into one horrendous satire!” or whatever. Despite these big flaws tho, I’ll say this is still better than Lightyear, and the Disney animated movies that were huge fails after the masterpiece that was Encanto. IMO
