Turns out $400 for a "broken" Atari Jaguar is a fantastic deal - Retro Console Restoration

Looks like the "behind the scenes" video format is here to stay with another unscripted and minimally edited repair project. This week it's a faulty Atari Jaguar that I bought from eBay, and I paid a handsome penny for it even though it was listed "for parts".
I've never seen an Atari Jaguar in person before, and knew close to nothing about it growing up. It does indeed have a bizarre controller but otherwise looks like a normal cartridge based system for the era. I managed to get this one working and it turns out the $400 I paid for it was an awesome deal due to the rest of the game carts bundle (system was $355 + $25 shipping and I bought an aftermarket A/V cable for $20).
It's always eye opening to me when I find systems that require very little attention to get them working. Granted the seller of this system knew it was worth something even "for parts" so it wasn't exactly destined for the trash, but nonetheless its an awesome bundle that I'm ACTUALLY going to game on and enjoy. This one is going under the TV, not on the shelf.

Thanks for the flashback. I worked on the case design for that console back in the 90s. I didn’t have anything to do with the electronics but I did a little case redesign and some of the graphics. Did you know there was a blue version planned for the east coast and the dark gray was for the west coast and the power button was supposed to be a small round post. Atari’s Jaguar director made almost every mistake you could make while developing this console. It was like they wanted it to fail.

@AerFixus
@AerFixus 2 года назад
@@deadsi Reverse voltage is really bad for most devices. It doesn't matter if it's meant for one way or the other, there is a good chance you will damage your device if you send it the wrong polarity of electricity. A well designed device includes protection against it, but to save costs, the extra parts required to add protection can be left out when designing the product. The Atari Jaguar is one of those devices without the required circuitry to protect from the wrong polarity of power.

Old computers, too. Back in 2005 or so I sold all of my Amiga hardware (5 Amiga 1200's, 3 Amiga 4000's, 4 PowerPC cards, 3 060 Accelerators..). The PPC cards for my Amiga 1200's sold for about €270 each. The only one on Ebay now is at €3,500. An Amiga 1200 itself was selling for around €40 on Ebay now the average is €600-€700. If I had kept it all for 15 years, I'd be looking at €30-40k easily. I suppose the lesson is, never sell anything. Store it in a box somewhere.

Typing whilst watching talking to the video ‘you need to plug a game in before powering up’ otherwise it won’t light up, glad you figured it out quickly. I own two Jags, one boxed , a working boxed Jag CD and almost all gams, all boxed, 95% are new/mint. Great little system, far more capable than most of the games suggest, killed off too soon as so many games were in development. Of course, it also couldn’t compete with the PlayStation 1.

Something funny about the notorious Jaguar CD system. I have owned about a dozen of em. Whenever one didnt work it was always the same problem. The spindle was pushed down and jammed and wouldnt spin. all it takes is a sharp knife and in a matter of seconds gently pry the spindle upwards slightly usually you see slight up movement and slight pop sound. you now have a perfectly working jaguar cd again. ive fixed several like this

They are rare, but sometimes you can find a super deal on eBay! Once I bought a parts only lot of consoles for super cheap because there wasn't a lot of info and it was a bit of a gamble. It was a NES, SNES, N64, PS2, PS3 and original Xbox. When I got them, I started testing them, and not only did every one of the consoles work, but the PS3 was a backwards compatible model, and the Xbox had been modded and had hundreds of games loaded on it. It was insane. Only thing I could figure is, it was some parent who cleaned out their attic and didn't want to take the time to test them. I still have several of those consoles. They were all in excellent condition!
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 2 года назад
That's an awesome haul. When you get lots like that theres a high chance it was a single owner. I've also noticed sports games are usually bundled by resellers because they are cheap. A single owner is more likely to bundle a valuable collection with their console if they are getting rid of it. You only need to luck out once, and from the looks of it you already have.

I know someone else has already pointed this out to you probably but if I remember right the Jaguar had a system in place that it wouldn’t power on unless you had a cartridge inserted…. But like I said above “If I remember right”….. 👍🏻

I bought a boxed and mint one of these 20 years ago from a Computer Exchanges in London somewhere for £30. the guy in front of me in the queue bought a spectrum +2 for £250. That should give an indication of how undesirable these things were, barely 5 years after launch they couldn't even give them away. As an Atari fanboy with STs and Lynxes I knew it was a great price though and would be worth something one day. Its only recently the values have soared really. Actually had fun playing Theme Park on it, it was such a simple game but even then the console couldn't handle it, it basically ground down to a halt when you got really successful and there were too many customers! lol. There was really nothing good about it at all. Loved the soundtrack to tempest 2000 though. Always wanted to get the toilet seat CD attachment for it but apparently 90% of those for sale are junk now.

There's a load of add on's for that console. Only ever seen one in person with original box etc. My sister is trying to sell one, randomly

I was like "Please put a cartridge in it first! Don't go down the unnecessary rabbit hole" LOL. I assumed AVP was the expensive game. I swear it used to be around $100 at one point but maybe I'm misremembering? Do you have any idea why the system was designed to where it needs a cartridge inserted in order for it to turn on?
@BorderlineOCD
@BorderlineOCD 2 года назад
No idea why it was designed that way but apparently it can be easily modified to turn on without a cart by bridging two pins on the cart connector. It was a popular mod with folks whom developed for the system. Just some random info I found while researching why it wasn't turning on.

I had no idea the consoles were going for that kind of money these days. I paid $50 for mine brand new from Telegames. Seems like yesterday but I guess it was 20 years ago now. I literally have maybe two hours of use on it and that's it. I only ever had the Cybermorph game it came with which was really boring.

That is about what the console would sale for without the original box. In their mind the console didn't work so $400.00 was still a good payday in their mind? You did get a great deal with a working Atari Jaguar and got a lot of games with this purchase!🙂

I worked for a video game store while In high school and we had one Jaguar that sat on the shelf for over 2 years. No one wanted it and no one bought any of the games. Meanwhile we were selling PS1, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Sega Saturn like hot cakes.

May have already been mentioned/asked, but do modern TVs accept or translate analog signals? I mean, the RF output is analog?
@BorderlineOCD

If you have an analog tuner in your HDTV then yes. My TV is an older model which has a bunch of component, s-video and composite inputs in addition to the familiar HDMI.

Damn, I hate when people use clothing, towels, and sheets as packing material. It's like Russian Roulette for bed bugs lol. Great video! Jag has always one of those systems where the cost outweighs the enjoyment of ownership, but with the resale of those carts it's a no brainer (as long as it all works).
