Turns Out Imposter Syndrome Isn’t Chronic, Who Knew

Join me for a hike? I head up Nether Beck, which is a perfect stream with a series of waterfalls and pools in the valley of Wasdale in the Western Lake District, and talk about imposter syndrome.
This is actually my second video on the subject: my second ever video broached how to hypothetically get past imposter syndrome (here: • Imposter Syndrome ) while, now out of my PhD, I have first-hand experience.
Can I also say? I actually really, really enjoyed the filming, editing, and uploading process of this whole thing. Oftentimes it's a worry and struggle; the lighting's rubbish, I'm fuzzy knowing what to say, I'm making a million takes. Please let me know if you'd like me to make another video like this - I certainly would, but might depend on sound quality!

Previous video: • Cover Reveal for Pluto...
Another mental health video: • The Addiction to Overw...
Random video! • I Submitted My Thesis.

Music is called 'Billy and the Cloneasaurus' by You Break You Buy - thanks for permission to use and for being catchy!

My name is Lucy Kissick, I have a PhD in planetary science from the University of Oxford, I'm now a research scientist at a national laboratory, and my god, any day now I'll have to take the Christmas tree down. I'm so sad :( I mean, it's artificial, so the exact same thing is coming out next year, but still.

One thing that has always helped me is working with someone junior to you (if it is possible in your work/study). You will be surprised at how much of an impact working with someone who wants to get to where you are right now has on the feeling of being an imposter. When you are someone's role model or in someone's positive light, you can avoid feeling down and like you haven't achieved anything based on talent.

Two more advices: share your feelings with peers that you trust and read about mental health in post-graduation.

So lucky to have that on your doorstep!! It’s beautiful up there. On imposter syndrome, at one point I just realised, everyone is kinda struggling and doubting themselves. They’re just really good at hiding it.

Been watching since I went back to school in my early 30s, and saw ur first vid on impostor syndrome. Now I'm applying for grad school and never stopped feeling this way. Bachelor's, to work, and while applying, the whole way through. Thanks. I know I doing well but it's always there.

Happy to see you, dr Kissick. All the best and lots of success in New Year. I also submitted my PhD before Christmas. Keep the fingers crossed. Hopefully this syndrome stuff won't be a big issue for me. I am still fighting OCD each day. ;)

Thank you for sharing this! I am finishing my PhD and while I know that I am passionate at my work, I feel so useless. I do not know if what you describe is the casewith me and if other students feel that way but I hope that at some point things will get better 😕! For all of us!!

Imposter syndrome vs Dunning Kruger effect is always a good one to understand(dealing with the very difficult people in the workplace whom believe they’re brilliant but they ain’t 🙄 Dunning Krugers in the workplace can be a nightmare, particularly if they’re the boss or the team leader 🤦🏻‍♂️)😉 👍. Stunning scenery and great video Lucy,

Let's be honest here, one of the lessons I have learned in the past few months is that I am not in full (if any) control of my psyche. There are deep rooted beliefs and conditionings that influence how I react to events and my emotional response to them. Finishing the Phd with some good publications is the very thing that will challenge my insecurities. I would prove to myself that I overcame something I thought was insurmountable. Even if I do not do so well, which is a plausible outcome, I would know that I gave my best shot. That I am a published scientist. That I can give my best shot, and cope well with any outcome. I also wish I could cure myself out of impostor syndrome through meditation and self-love, but that is rather hard.
