Thank God for people like you. Not only am I not mechanically inclined, but I don't even know the terms, yet I'm trying to install a motor on a bicycle. Also, thank God for Google photo search, or I'd have no idea what this piece was. 😆

27mm left hand thread puller. thread it in deep as you can or threads will rip out.

*1-Shot slinger* we have not had that problem. You do want to thread it on untill it bottoms out on the threads, then back it off half a turn. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. We appreciate the feedback sir!

And how do you put it back on is the question? Is it as simple as just sliding it back on?

Yep! Just put the flywheel back on in the correct position and torque the nut to the proper value.
