Imagine if they had a campaign mode where you start of with a starter plane of your choice and you hade to fly cargo and passengers to get money to buy planes fuel repairs etc. All the planes had real prices.
I think he forgot to set video to go live on the right day... :P While it's nice that tutorial is there when game goes live, but it's pointless to watch it if you can't follow...
@@JenniferinIllinois I only played XPlane and played fsx 2 days ago to check it out and had a moment where I got overjoyed seeing 1 kind of irrelevant landmark being represented in the sim accurately by default. Literally FSX gave me a taste of the joy we will all get when we even just see autogen cities ^^
Yes. If the gpu is not running at 100% i allways increase my graphic settings because then is something wrong. Better gpu is at 100% as cpu. If nothing is at 100% then is the game broken.
No one really needs to look at temps, the GPU will throttle back at high temps. Now that is not ideal but it will show in clock speed or FPS, not temperature. An older GPU that doesn't throttle back will simply turn off long before it overheats. Any hardware degrades faster at higher temps but this is nothing to worry about unless you run it 24/7, the biggest problems associated with high temperature are throttling and fan noise. It will also increase the CPU temp since the CPU is often located above the GPU, but most games are GPU-bound anyway.
All the research I have done confirms this. 100% usage is totally normal, and as it should be. If it's not pinned at 99% (Nvidia), the game is not optimised properly.
i think he said he doesn't want it running at 100% because you will get frame drops where as 90% makes you less likely to run into issues with the extra headspace
@@greenneck5396 As long as you are well above the maximum fps (refresh rate) and your frametime is good, you wont see any frame drops. But yeah if you right on the maximum, it might be wise to have some headroom. Games should include a proper benchmark so you can get it right even in the most taxing situations.

I have work the next 4 days in a row, then tuesday game is released, ill get home, put the game on to download on my new pc, then wake up to a new generation. Im excited.
You know its an incredibly complex game when the entire first 38 minute episode is not about learning to fly lmao. Great vid, cleared a lot of stuff up for me
me: Okay, seems pretty good. 60 FPS...40 FPS...30 FPS...What is his GPU...a 2060 maybe... looks it up, hoping my 1060 3gb will do something like medium with 30 FPS... sees, that he has a 2080 TI OC
Welcome to MSFS.. :P this is the barebone sim, wait till you get some AI traffic packs, and high end sceneries installed.. get used to living with +- 20 FPS.
That's why 4k is currently out of the question without dropping render scale. He's effectively running 2 Full HD screens at the same time. If you have a single 1920x1080 panel, then you'll likely can run the same settings on a 2060 / 2060 Super. With a 1060, you'll be in medium territory, but as with other games detail tweaking can get you a fair bit of improvement in the areas that matter more for you. Especially other kind of vehicles, traffic and shadows are expensive to render and easily overlooked.
Would be nice to have some insight on what must have been discussed on the beta/alpha forum about what is responsible for what. Meaning, which settings are GPU and which are CPU. FSX's downfall was it was primarily dependent on CPU (unless you used DX10 mode which never worked). P3d made major headway throughout their great efforts in both making it 64bit and giving more to the GPU. I don't sim much anymore (currently) but am an organization junkie so took massive amounts of notes over the years. These are my notes from P3d. I only post them to give an example of what I wish you beta privileged simmers would share. With the latest full NDA lift it would even be nice to have read only access to the beta forums. Anywho, here are my notes from P3d. I'm hoping this new platform gives even more to the GPU where it belongs. Leaving the CPU for what it should be doing. All of my notes are my notes, thus written by me and confirmed by me unless otherwise noted in parentheses. GPU heavy features: - Shadows - Dynamic Reflections - SSAA - Dynamic Lighting - 3D Water (water set to ultra) - New 3D rain/snow effects (set weather to storm theme to test). GPU Bound: Anything to do with shadows (cast, receive, distance, quality) gets handled exclusively by the GPU. The same with anti-aliasing and screen resolution. And also dynamic lighting and dynamic reflections. CPU Bound: Settings are water reflections, water detail level, texture resolutions (clouds, airports etc.), autogen density and drawing distance, scenery complexity, ai density, cloud draw distance.
@@Napoleonic_S its 1080p ultrawide 3840x1080 if you look at his resolution. I'm sure if you dial it to a more native 16:9 ratio you'll get a much smoother experience... also, I assume that since he's on a preview build in this video (weird, i know, especially because his previous video was the final build) that it's much better on the final build. I've seen plenty of other videos (quill18) he says he's able to run everything on ultra and get good fps...
@@ShivamPatel-et4kk oh I didn't see that, that's super ultrawide aspect ratio btw but that still have way less pixels than my ultrawide 3440x1440 res display and even less than 16:9 UHD. That's scary prospect lol although older gamers and flight simmers have always known that most games in the genre didn't run well on contemporary hardware of their time.
Napoleonic S but his GPU is also not that hot. Peaking at like 60 Celsius. This means that his GPU is not running at it’s full capacity. It’s normal for your GPU to run at full capacity when doing something that’s hardware intensive. He said that only 60% of his GPU is being used so nvidia will have to release a new driver update to optimize their GPUs to run at 100% when using FS2020. Not to mention, he has a 1080p ultra wide monitor.
@@derickvo317 And then even now it was maxing out at 95-100% when he put it to ultra/higher settings..And so what if gpu is only running at 60-65 celsius? That just means gpus got good cooling, and it does as it's water-cooled. My air cooled triple fan never goes over 65 in any game so far, and I max everything out. There could be room for improvement with updated drivers tho, as with any new game when it comes out, and there probably will be one.
Such blank statements are terrible. Depending on the situation it's totally fine to not have 100% GPU usage, and it doesn't always means there's a bottleneck. For example having vsync on (as shown in the Video) might result in less than 100% usage while still maintaining the optimal frame rate.
Thank you so much for taking the time to go thru the settings and playing around with the graphic settings and looking at their results, not to many reviewers do that.
Victor Hugo nvidia hasn’t released a driver update to optimize their gpus for this sim yet. He mentioned that his GPU usage was 60% while with optimized drivers, it would be running at 100% which will give about 60-70% more frames for him.
In Horizon Zero Dawn a reviewer had a problem with fps and GPU usage because not all the PCIe lanes were being used, Squirrel might wanna check if it's running at 16x or 8x. His setup is exceeding optimal system requirements. Otherwise we will have to wait for a driver update because this is not normal, he's running a wide angle 2k resolution (3840*1080). Imagine how this would run on the HP Reverb G2 VR set which has two 2160x2160 screens
The fauna markers point out animals in the sim. (Giraffes, elephants, etc, which are modeled in certain areas of the world.) I don't know how common these are globally. But there are regions where they've included bears, flamingos, giraffes and elephants (and perhaps other wildlife). I'm hoping they'll add more - like whales, sharks, dolphins, etc. Some random deer on a remote landing strip would be pretty cool too, as long as you can shoo them off the runway with a low pass! Lol.
@@infiniteflite6222 Regardless of any possible future optimisation , there is no substitute for raw power. Time to plan or build that monster PC you've always dreamed of :D
Check his build specs and keep in mind he was pushing the limits of his PC and GPU for demonstration purposes, and having to dial back some settings to find his sweet spot. He was also demonstrating how to tweak the settings for individual PC's. Not everyone is going to have the same settings and so, he was demonstrating what settings to play around with.
The Fauna poi thingy is for animals (duh ;P). It will point out herds of giraffes or elephants, etc. But those are like really rare atm (unfortunately)… ObisidanAnt did a vid about this^^
This is so jerky and stuttery. Most of the time . This isn’t right. I hope this is improved on future updates . Very disappointing. It takes away from the realism
firstly thanks for the video, it was awesome and helpful. i think you missed a trick or 2 with the graphics settings though, i think you will claw a good amount of FPS back by reducing the render scaling down to 80 percent maybe 90 if it starts looking soft but go with 80 and then hopefully if nvidia do good by us and drop a driver update around the release for this game with direct support we will be able to press alt f3 and that will bring up the nvidia freestyle filter options, going into that you will be able to apply the sharpening filter which is actually a good quality sharpening tool and then adjust this to what looks pleasing to you, it will help offset the softer look you end up with by reducing the scaling and get it looking pretty good but you will gain a good chunk of FPS back doing this with hopefully minimal impact on your visual experience. also i noticed you said about it not being a good idea to have the gpu running at 100 percent. this is actually the very best outcome and is ''ideal'' for gaming, if your gpu is less than 100 percent it almost always means it is waiting for frames to be delivered from the cpu or ram or your settings are too low and your hitting your monitors frame limit/vsync cut off, you want the gpu to deliver the frames as soon as possible, 97 to 100 percent is where you want to be with the gpu, it will do absolutely no harm at all provided your cooling is on point. if your trying to keep the gpu at 90 percent for fear of stress to the component your just leaving frames on the table and probably should have got the next gpu down. my 2080ti overclocks quite well, i can gain 9fps on average between stock and overclocking so if your hovering somewhere between 50fps and 60fps it might be worth applying an overclock to drag you even closer to that sweet spot of 60 but that is ofcourse on whoever reads this, do your research dont just push sliders for fun. thanks for the video, hopefully my comment is helpful rather than critical.
Really appreciate that - I have a 2080 Super card. What recommendations would you have? I am a bit obsessed with visual quality but obviously don't want stuttering!
@@enrik2184 If the cpu isn't powerful enough it will under-utilize the gpu, too much heat in the case, or even too low a resolution will cause the cpu to bottleneck the gpu

Would be cool if these tutorials start going into more depth with ILS flying, maybe introduce charts and how to use them with this sim. When I played fsx very casually I couldn't get my head around ILS flying very well :(
Hey Squirrel - I've spent many hours watching and re-watching these MSFS tutorial videos while practicing - they have been invaluable. The quality of instruction is superb. Subbed and liked! I hope you keep this channel going!
Seems quite cpu heavy. Will be interesting to see how clock speed and thread count affect it. I heard it’s currently dx11 so I’ll be interested in seeing what dx12 does if they implement it.
Thanks for that. This will save us lot of time when we have FS at last. *Very kind of you!* From 8:56 (cache), I got a question not about cache itself, but where you can install FS. I have 2 SSDs: a 512 GB C: for the OS, and a 2 TB D: for my sims. *Will I be able to install on D:, that means NOT in C:\Program Files ?* Also, in the new FS, can we adjust the number of FPS, like in FSX or not?
These tutorials are EXTREMELY helpful (for me, at least) and I look forward to having you continue producing them, even after MSFS 2020 is well circulated and understood. Thank you for the time and patience it takes to make them... Lee Graves
1) Know how much space you have on all of your storage devices 2) Set the path to where you want to rolling cache on (if you use a dedicated SSD for FS2020 for example) 3) Put it as high as you want while leaving at least 20-40% remaining capacity (so the game can be updated, also SSD performance degrade when there are getting close to full. So never completely fill it up) For a frame of reference, Microsoft stated that the total world data is 2 Petabytes (2 million gigabytes). The largest consumer grade SSD currently is around 8 Terabytes (8000 Gigabytes), so if you'd spend a year circling the world at low altitude and in a tight enough pattern for the game to load all the details in, this is how much storage you'd want, if after this you'd never want the game to need to load in stuff from the internet. You will probably be completely fine with under 100GB, especially if you have fast (i.e. gigabit fiber) internet. If your internet is slow and you have rolling cache then the game will not stream in the highest quality assets from the internet on your first flyover of a fixed place, but maybe on your second flyover, since the game might have downloaded the terrain date in the background just after you had passed the area. If your internet is slow and you have no rolling cace, then the game will not stream in the highest quality assets from the internet on any flyover. If your internet is superfast, then the difference between a large cache or none is high quality stuff gets downloaded from the internet nearly as fast as it would be loaded from your SSD. First flyover might still have things popping in a bit later than later flyovers if the objects are stored in the cache.
Thanks for the explanation @@adriankoch964 I have a 250GB SSD dedicated to the rolling cache, with 232GB of usable storage, so I set my Cache at 230GB. I guess I should roll that back a bit? Maybe 200GB? As an aside, after I formatted the SSD, I created a folder and called it FS20 Cache. I guess this is correct as you cant write to the root of the SSD?
@@MrBillUp No idea about writing in the root, but it might be because of the permissions from windows store apps. Definitely leave ample space on the game containing disk for updates! If the game is 100-150gb, you should have ~25-50gb+20% of your total drive capacity left free. Same with the 20% on the cache disk. Aside from that, it should not matter too much. I've reduced my rolling cache to 50gb for now. After checking out a dozen of different cities and also logging around 400NM at lowish alitudes, the game had only downloaded a bit over a gigabyte. Less than expected :)
I'm running with a RX580 8GB at high settings, works fine on my end. About 20 something fps on the ground but in the sky, way more fps. Excellent for a flight sim
I can't play any game below 60fps - its just....nah Also, I set my rolling cache as you did to 500GB and it's been "updating the rolling cache" for over an hour, and tells me not to interrupt it....I don't know if it was supposed to take this long, you didn't mention anything.

Terry Lee I’m new to this stuff and would like to know how to perform preflight checklists as well. I’ve no plans to get my pilots license but I’d like to get as realistic as possible with it all. I’m planning to get a yoke and rudder pedal setup eventually. I had no idea how cool and entertaining this stuff could be.
@@paparuffy406 I actually learned how aerodynamics work from playing Pilot Wings 64 on the N64 back in the 90s. I learned how pulling up could cause the Gyro copter to stall out unless you gave it enough power and putting the nose down would increase speed. But you learn so much more from a real flight simulator like this. And it's great fun!
What GETS ME about all the review videos MFS 2020, P3D, FSX etc is that NOBODY ever talks about performance optimization on the platform they are running the sim on. Why is that? Before you install any of this you should spend a GOOD DAY SLIMMING DOWN YOUR version of Windows 7, 10 etc. Removing of the bloody bloatware that Windows 10 installs on your system for instance, disabling all privacy settings, removing all the GAMES, CORTANA, USELESS APPS, removing all unneeded keys from the registry etc etc etc. Only then can you truely appreciate your SIM. Keep in mind that a tons of CRAP affects FPS including ALL THOSE RIGS THAT ARE RUNNING 9 RGB FANS including fan controller software HAS TO BE TURNED OFF! Antivirus and un needed OPEN PROGRAMS and Taskbar crap STOPPED! Now try running your SIM. When your windows 10 loads in 5 seconds from start to desktop your ready. If your waiting for longer than that you've got more WORK TO DO as far as optimizing your WINDOWS INSTALLS!
Hi Squirrel. As a total newbie to flight sims, I find myself revisiting these videos as they are extremely detailed and informative. As I proceed to attempt to climb my extremely mountainous learning curve in flying this sim, I find some of the things you discuss mean more to me than when I first saw the video. I am so grateful that you have created this tutorial series. Thank you and stay well.
The Data/Rolling Cache Limit (GIB) doesn't work for me. It keeps resetting it to 0 after I enter any number and then says it's too small. I've tried to set it to 100 on a drive that has 175gb free, and I also just entered 500 and it always sets it to 0 and says it's too small.. EDIT: That drive was a 600gb drive with 174gb free. But the highest number I could enter for Rolling Cache Limit was only 90GB... Why? Does it need some extra 'working space' or something?
Ok, I finally figured out that you have to wait for it to allocate the entire space for use. It takes a while. And if you want to change the size, first delete it. Things start acting funny if you just put in another gb number.
Honestly I don't think it will be _THAT_ awful. Yes, it will be a little worse, but I bet you will be able to run in on medium settings at 1080p resolution and get somewhat decent fps.
Having the gpu at 100% load is normal in video games. It means there is a gpu bottleneck meaning that the game won't run higher fps due to gpu. It seams that this game is cpu intensive if you say that your gpu runs 65% and its 40fps 50 fps. Usually games would push your cpu or gpu to its limit(100%) to achieve the highest possible framerate. If you upgrade your cpu you'd see ypur gpu running more at 100%. But long story short try aiming for 100gpu usage as this is completely normal. But I do live these videos.
He was probably CPU bottlenecked on medium. He hardly gained any FPS going from medium to high, and pretty sure he had more stutters on medium. Unfortunately, this video makes several false assumptions.
Even for people who know what they're doing with graphics settings this is incredibly useful in showing what a high end system (with a high-res monitor) can do (and indeed even it can't run full Ultra!). I don't have a 2080Ti for my new 10900K 5.1GHz all core OC system bundle arriving Monday 17th as I am waiting for the 3080ti or 3090 depending on price. Looks like medium for now 🙁. This will be an indispensable series of tutorials to decide on hardware and software settings. Thanks for making these tutorials!

My current PC with the 1070, can play Planet Coaster in 4k 24fps on larger park maps. My ISP is Vodafone NZ. 100mb/sec download and 10mb/sec upload speeds.

A well made and useful video, thank you. However, this is not a tutorial. Brand this as some kind of advanced settings and fine tuning video. It's _obsessed_ with frame rates, and also very particular to your specific hardware. Nothing about actually flying planes or how to play Flight Simulator.
Also, I have no Weather button on that top/center toolbar. When I try to turn that button on in the settings cog, Weather is disabled and grayed out. Is there any way to enable the button to enable the weather?? I would like to tweak my FPS and this feature is essential. PS, Thanks for these Tutorials!!

Data usage is actually quite low. 7.54 gigs since you started playing...? Even if you just mean a few hours today since you got the full release, you're only talking a handful of mpbs on average. If you mean since the very start (?), then that is incredibly low.
Is there a difference between the Steam version and the MS Store one?? And do you need to have the game on an SSD in order to run it fluently without stuttering??
No difference, only if you care about using it on consoles when it comes out. If you get the Microsoft store version, you get to play on console for free too
Thank you so much for this very helpful tutorial. I just installed FS2020 and found it completely overwhelming. I am looking forward to seeing the rest!!
Thanks, very detailed series of video’s! Is it, by the way, possible to backup all settings in case things not work or accidently reset your custom settings?
Hey, how about rather than getting people to look at their FPS right off the bat, how about just ignoring the FPS and using your eyes to see if the frame rate is something that particular user is happy with? FPS obsession leads to people getting antsy if it drops below about 40 when in fact if you didn't know what it was, you would be quite happy with less. I don't look at my FPS in any game, I look at what performance I see with my eyes.
Excellent video, Squirrel! I've installed MSI Afterburner and Riva Tuner Statistics Server. How do I get the FPS displayed in the corner of the screen? Thanks!
what do I have to do to get record the front view without any flight instruments on the screen, or the airplane on the screen. I just want the view outside the front window to be recorded.
I have watched a lot of MSFS 2020 videos but this by far is the very best setup overview video that have seen. Very logical and direct approach. Outstanding! Thank you for taking the time to do this.
