Great explanations! I find I can solve most puzzles with this technique and the pairs, along with the pairs patterns that I’ve kind of gotten in my head with experience. I have Tourette’s Syndrome and puzzles help me ground myself and decrease my tics after a long day 😊

You take the time to fully explain, which is excellent. I am puzzled (excuse the term) why you worked out the list of possible values for the row, but then as you worked on each cell you considered ALL values including the ones you had already eliminated as possibilities?
Thanks for the effort and explaining different techniques to solve sudoku puzzles. I have a question though. In the first step you have identified missing numbers in our example row, why you did not use that list of 5 numbers to find small numbers (possibilities) but rather tried all 1-9 numbers?
Hi Adrin good question. I am a teacher and thus provide a step by step approach for the player whiois learning a technique for the first time. Experienced players need not have to do this.
@@SudokuGuy I admit it thru me off too. When you were approaching it from a line of 9 numbers and writing the missing ones to the side and then jumped to analyzing the individual square, it was confusing. I think approaching the individual square first is primary to solving the larger puzzle. I can look at the first square and start with the first missing number and look up/down and across the connecting rows to see if it is in another corresponding square. If so, then it can't fit in that row it has to go into a different row within that block. I just keep working that angle and you will see where the blocks exists and eliminates it from that row then know where the missing number belongs. I sometimes just scan the squares down and across to see if I can see matching numbers that show me where to place the final missing number. Like"2" is in square 2 row 3; and then "2" is in square 1 row 1 so that has to mean "2' has to go into square 3 in "row 2". Course you have to check the down rows too because you might have more than one empty spot in the same square/row and have to do the same process of elimination to plug it into the right empty spot. You can get to where you can scan for this in no time eliminating a lot of numbers and move on to the harder ones but have gotten a lot of the easier ones out of the way already and you are also playing against the clock too, well online anyway.

I like to write the numbers outside so I save myself some time in not going through the entire process of all nine numbers. For example, you marked 2,3,5,7,8. While working that row, those are the only numbers I am concerned about. This also helps prevent you from putting the wrong number in like that pesky 9 that slipped in on you. Your videos are very helpful! Thank you.
I truly don't see how the outside the box method was helpful since he had to also write my numbers inside the box... and then arbitrarily place numbers in other parts of the puzzle (such as the Number 5). I'm confused. 😳

Hi Robin, solving a Sodoku is really more about working out all the places where a number can't be placed, and when all those places have been eliminated, there's only one place left. Thank you for all your tutorials, I learn a little bit more from each one.

Just a hint, if you consider the outside numbers (2,3,5,7,8), you do not need to check all possible numbers (1-9) for blank cells in the rows. Because 1 4 6 9 are already not possible
I love your enthusiasm, and this is a great tutorial. Although, 10:24 You didn't have to fill in that previous 8 to come to this conclusion, it was already impossible for the 8 to be placed anywhere else, just thought I'd point that out, as I did notice that pretty fast.
Maybe you didn't watch the whole video before posting this comment. He said multiple times that "for the sake of argument" he will put in a few extra numbers to demonstrate this technique. It was never meant to be solvable from the beginning.
Thank-you Mike77. I tried to do this puzzle b4 watching the vid, and noticed within a few minutes that 4,5,8 in column 1 and row 6 make the Box 5 unsolvable. As for saying, suppose I put a 5 here and suppose I put a 3 there... some people are going to miss-interpret that as a technique. No SUDOKU instructor should ever use an unsolvable puzzle unless it is for the specific purpose of teaching people how to recognize that the puzzle is unsolvable.
I agree Mike. I'm guessing the problem is the 1 and 4 in block 2 column 6 because there needs to be a 4 in row 4 block 5 I discovered it was invalid when I tried to do the puzzle before watching the Lesson :(

Hello, thank you for your video! I wanted to ask, after you put in the 8 and then you have the number 7 appear once. So as you need at least once in the row shouldn’t it mean we could eliminate second rows first columns number into a 7?
Unfortunately, the puzzle shown here has no solutions. That is to say, it is self-contradictory right from the start. Using my technique, I encountered a contradiction after just 6 moves (although I didn't notice until about the 12th move). This is the order in which I started the solve (here, in each triple of digits, the 1st indicates the digit to be written, the 2nd indicates the row number (1 to 9 from top to bottom), and the 3rd indicates the column number (1 to 9 from left to right): 646, 842, 823, 834, 232, 552. At this point, there is no place for a 4 in box 4. As it happens, the same contradiction could have arisen after just two moves: 842, 552. Indeed, with a little extra reasoning, the contradiction can be revealed before writing in anything. None of this invalidates your technique, but it's a bit unfortunate.
Hello, Im a bit confused about the 5. Because before you put the 5 in the cell left corner there were more possibiltys in the collom above and under. In the collum you put the 5 there was 3 possibilitys. Can you give me a better explanation. My english is not my mother langaudgde. Thanks in advance.

This technique has been so helpful for me, before this I had never been able to solve medium puzzles without taking a number as "a hunch" and then along the way that hunch would have/have not messed up the puzzle for me.. I can now have confidence in solving a medium/hard puzzle using this trick easily, thanks so much sudoku guy! :))

It makes no sense first writing all the numbers down that can be filled out in that row and next not using it. Each time you check all numbers from 1 to 9 while you actually only have to check the numbers that are still missing: the ones you wrote down at the right of the row. By not limiting you to these numbers you almost made an error (the nine, remember) and you needed more time than necessary.

Thank you mate, I have a real headscratcher, I solved as long as I can and have filled out all the potential numbers in every single cell. Can't understand how it is possible to solve. I do not know every advanced techniques so I think it must be some advanced technique that is needed to know to be able to solve it!

Just a point. If you go through and select out the numbers that are left to put into the row, when you go through the boxes you only need to check for those numbers.
You are right. For experienced players but not for beginners. I'm a teacher. Certainly you can use this approach, however it may become messy if your grid is small.

Great tutorial, lots of patience... What I was missing was using the row marks and simply searching for those 5 numbersin each cell (instead of going 1-9 all the time). Since you put it down already, recognizing the missing digits, you might have used it, as well.
My boyfriend got me a sudoku book to do, and I have never done one before, and with this technique, I solved my first one within 20 minutes! Thank you for this video 👏🏻

there was a triple 235 on the row leaving the 7 and 8 in the top left box also in this example you did not need to write in the small numbers as the 78 could only be in the top left box from observing they are already in top right and in the row entering the top middle

Hi. Once your video gets to 9 minutes, and you’ve put all the little numbers in that row, in the last 3 cells you have just 3 little numbers: 35, 235 and 235 (do you call that a 3 by 3?). So, could you not work along the rest of that row and rub out any little 2, 3 or 5s that appear in the other cells? This would mean you could rub out the little 3 in the first cell of 37, which means you could convert it into a big 7? Then in the next cell with 278, you could rub out the 2, and now the 7, and that must become a big 8? I hope I have read that right!
I don't think that's a 3x3. No need either. C2 is the only slot for an 8, that leaves A2 as the only slot for a 7. That get's you the connected pair in H2/I2 (23) which leaved 5 as the only option for E2. This stuff looks really basic to me (though I will try the "outside" system for some of the hard stuff I'm stuck at, just to see if it helps). I have so far managed every Sudoku I tackled, unless it requires X-Wing and harder stuff. I have just not been able to wrap my head around those.
Right on. Well done. You are right. As I have said in other videos "there is more than one way to solve" In this case I'm doing a simple procedure. assuming that a novice player does not see the 3X3. Thanks for pointing this out.

i tried to solve the sudoku that you showed us in this video and I discovered that it is unsolvable. because if you checked the 2nd block to the left, we will see that the only place for 4 and 5 are in the same slot. i want to know did you make this puzzle only to teach us this tactic or do you think that you did a mistake when wrote this puzzle on the board??? btw thanks for this tactic it was useful.

Your explain approaches that are very understandable. I thought I was simply great at solving sudoku puzzles. My determination led me to spend a lot of time solving “ hard” puzzles. But I came across a very hard puzzle that had me spending far too much time trying to solve the puzzle. After five days I realized that I was not able to place a number. I gave up my pride and found you on RU-vid.. You were explaining an approach. to a very hard puzzle. Thanks to your ability explaining very understanding ways to solve tough puzzles, I went back to my very hard puzzle and finally solve the puzzle. Thank you very much for your time and effort developing truly understanding solutions for the really tough puzzles, You should feel good offering meaningful solutions to the really tough sudoku puzzles.

Hello sir! That was a cute yippie, I also followed your technique, but separate them by row 1 row 2 and row 3 and then left, middle and right. Most of the time it works when Iam stuck with my puzzle, 90%, but sometimes not. Nevertheless, thank you so much for your guidance. I am going through your videos to gain more insights. I have been playing sudoku for almost 10 years, it is amazing to see different techniques being applied to this puzzle. Sudoku is a beautiful puzzle waiting to be cracked. Perfect exercise for the brain❤

The first time a picked up the a Sudoku game book, it was obvious it is based on the process of elimination involving numbers 1-9 each block and then across and down 3 blocks for a total of 9 blocks. I started out doing exactly what he was showing us taking each line and notating the missing numbers, but I so dropped that part. First thing I do is scan and find all the numbers I can and fill them in which I can do in my head. When you start doing the more difficult ones, you will need to note which numbers can go into a square as you go along you will fill in some numbers and eliminate others. At some point you find a number can go in more than one square and you just have to take a chance and guess and hope it's right or you can't get the last number to work. then it's hard to undo if you don't make notes you can back track on. I see formula's that are used to make these puzzles because some numbers missing are missing in more than one square like 2 and four appear to be missing in more than one square so which square does it go in? I like to beat my time too. I enjoy numbers so it's fun for me.

Your first point is spot on, if you’re solving without notations you’re either very clever or your puzzle isn’t actually very difficult. Practicing Sudoku and improving at Sudoku is about learning to recognize patterns/cases and improving at recognizing patterns/cases. Expert level puzzles are specifically designed to make those patterns appear less frequently, specifically designed to make them more difficult to recognize, and specifically designed to make them less effective when you do recognize them. If a person could solve a true expert level puzzle without any notations (without it taking them hours to do so) I would consider them a Sudoku master. A Sudoku master is unlikely to be looking up Sudoku tutorials on RU-vid.

Also, After you figure out there is only one 8 spot. filling that in, does that reveal any other single instances of the missing numbers? in this case 7 now only has one possible location.

Another reason one might be able to solve a puzzle w/o the smaller #'s is they have a very strong memory. I find it's most beneficial if I can narrow it down to 2 possibilities (I think my mind gets clouded if there are too many marks other than my "final" guesses), if I have to use 3+ usually I can't solve it without mistakes or cheating by looking at a narrow part of the key or digital check. I only count it against me if I guessed wrong, same w/ a computerized game. I then keep track by # of wrong guesses vs # of original blank squares, I'm doing fairly well if I'm @ over 90%. When I can consistently get through puzzles w/o guessing I'm ready to move up in difficulty. A way of guessing more reliably is using statistics, but I'm too lazy to write all that down & I can't remember it. Doing it from memory is similar in difficulty to counting cards in Blackjack IMO.
Hello Lewis. yes you are right. To remember all possibilities is a challenge. If you look at amy earlier videos I suggest you only put 2 small numbers in a cell if only 2 numbers can go there. Putting all possible numbers in each cell takes time and is messy. It is not until I get to advanced puzzles (tutorial 79 and above) that I suggest you put all small possible numbers in and empty cell, When this is the case then I have many tutorials from 79 and up showing what to do to solve when you have many little numbers in cells. e.g. locked little numbers. You will find these tutorials by going to my channel page.
