You can experiment with the length of both the flexo weave and the latex tubing to achieve results that you want. I hope this video answered some questions you had about these air muscles.

Thanks! This helps SO much. I was looking at hydraulic pistons for movement, but this works so much better, cause it's flexible.

I've build one 15 years ago, to improve this design add some brass tube w/ matching the diameter inside the blue tube, the length of the hose clamp...better clamping. Next use the shielding to attach the muscle, just leave enough after the hose and unbraid it, make 2 strands and knot them together where ever you want to attach the muscle. And there are hose clamps that can be crimped, difficult to find but soooo much cleaner... Btw. mine was built on a 4mm ext PU tube and some rubber tube out of some lab supply and copper shielding striped of a cable...

@@Zebrox_Editz I made that project a long time ago. You have to use an electric pneumatic air pressure valve to incanalate air to the artificial muscle. You can build it with a 24Volt battery package and a button to enable or disable power supply to a monostable electric air valve. For air supply you can use a mini air compressor.

Making the cable shields longer than rubber inside will mean it'll never inflate enough to stretch the muscle. The shielding should be pulled very tight over the rubber to get the most range out of it. All you're doing here is pretty much like inflating a balloon inside a bag. I'd be shocked if this 7 inch muscle even provides a single inch of pull. Are you pulling the rubber inside tight when it's mounted to the arm, and using the elasticity of the rubber as an additional contraction force? That would make sense then to make the shielding this long.

Alternatively, you can use oil to air tight the tube the the bent end. This won't allow air to flow. But make sure you stir tube alot so that it gets air tight there.

It is possible with nylon, which expands and contracts the cold heat ?. which used to be something like cold air and hot air. but with the same comsepto or adding 2 es posible hacerlo con nylon, que se expande con el frio y se contrae con el calor?. cosa que se utilice sea algo como aire frio y aire caliente. pero con el mismo comsepto o sumandose las 2

+Jamesioso Ho , I'm working on an exosuit myself to aid in off grid solo projects that include some heavy lifting. I was wondering if you had an idea on what kinda tubing I could use that'd handle more then 50 pounds at 100 psi. I plan on using a braided carbon sleeve, proportional valves and you're sensors to trigger them are what I've been looking for myself

I ordered kevlar, fiberglass and carbon mesh sleeving. I'll test each one and eventually get a max psi of each one. I assume it doesn't matter what airtight material is inside, it'd just act as a barrier where the sleeve provides strength and shape. Probably need some sort of rubber inside that is consistent and designed for industrial or scientific use, rather than a cheap water balloon or something. Hoping to build a robot hand with these.

That has happened to me before. If you followed what I did, just make sure to tighten the hose clamps all the way down until you can no longer turn it. Also, be sure to use the lighter to melt a ridge around the flexo to prevent slipping.

To be honest, i don't exactly follow all the exact material you mentioned in the video, since i can't find the latex tube, instead i use inner tube from bike. But i tried to tighten it and it actually works! although i still don't quite understand the working principle of it, but it works... Thanks

Make sure you tighten everything down until you can't turn your screw driver. However, make sure you are not restricting airflow from your source.

@Benny16M
@Benny16M 7 лет назад
Thanks for the quick reply! I am doing a similar project, but a whole exo suit, and was thinking of different options for the actuation. I am going to go down a similar path as you for the muscle sensors instead of hard switches to control the joints. These latex muscles may be the option I was looking for, for some smaller connections. Have you figured out a way to make the muscle sensors control in proportion to your natural movements, instead of acting like an off/on switch? Maybe using a potentiometer connected at the elbow joint could help with the control?
