This helped me a whole lot with the character I've been working on. I hadn't considered just how much you could do with that hair tab, and now not only does my boy have some fancy ears and a tail, but I made some goggles and a neat scarf too. Thanks so much for this tutorial, it really expanded my horizons with the kind of stuff that can be made in vroid.

This helped me a lot to figure out how to fix my character neckerchief/scarf made with the hair tool so it would stay fixed on the shoulders rather than clipping around with the head movement. Thank you for your tutorials!

"How to attach a tail to the butt?", a fundamental question way more important than it sounds like! xD . But just like hair can be anything, does that mean that this plugin allow hair groups to re-attach anywhere? For exemple when making wings? That opens quite alot of possibilities

Teeth is something you can't edit too much. You can turn on the vampire fangs or monster teeth using the blend shapes within unity (you can see that in my blendshape video)

if you want to go crazy with editing you can import it the model into blender and do the edits there, but If you do that you have to manually re-do all the spring bones and blendshapes in unity.

When I open my prefabs I don't have the "joints". I've tried every combination in the tool to assign the tail, but receiving "No 'SkinnedMeshRenderer' attached" to my object I place in the top of the BWT. Any tips?

i got the same. for the skinnedmeshrenderer, you have to click on each part of the hair, then go to compnonent > mesh > skinnedmeshrenderer (just click it and it attaches it). that sorts out the first issue. i haven't figured out how to find the joints though!

If you're struggling because it is only hair 001 and nothing else under hairs in Unity, VROID, Camera/Exporter -> Export On export info, go to Material Reduction and Uncheck Combine Hair Mesh. Export as normal after that.

i got a pop up saying "There is no 'SkinnedMeshRenderer' attached to the "HairJoint-7fd24a9f-091c-422d-90bb-2869f9667c3a" game object"

I clicked component and find skinned mesh render there for the hair joint. On the right side I filled up the parts with the word 'none' then tried to use bone weight transfer then it worked. I hope it will work with you as well. Goodluck!

most blendshape you can do out of vroid is turn them off and on. If you want movement you can take it to unity. I have a 5 part series on a 2 in one model and it shows wings getting blendshapes.

Followed this tutorial and another tutorial, but I'm getting an error saying "the root transform should have default translation, rotation, and scale", been looking online and can't find a solution

Can I ask what the other tutorial is? I know when I used the updated VRM importer for unity I received error messages, so I stick to the one from the blendshape video

@@jeremygreene9826 from the site: Starting from v0.56, Root (topmost parent) object with non-default values for translation, rotation, and scale is not allowed to export. In previous versions we found it would cause errors sometimes if Root’s transform is not Default. Instead, we recommend moving this object in the Hierarchy to be Root’s child.

Hi, i dont know how to export the model from unity xD it says "Require animator.avatar." is some video i can see to fix it? nevermind i found the solution: download the lastest version of UnityVrm, in my case it was UniVRM-0.61.1_7c03.

Before exporting, deselect "Combine Hair Mesh". Argama does this at 19:22, though it's labeled differently since the video is old.

Is there any way to kinda smooth out that diamond shape more? I've run into issues when trying to make fox tails and fluffy cat tails where at certain angles, that diamond hair shape is super apparent, even with smoothing out the taper of the hair as you did. If there isn't anything to be done about it, that's fine, I'm just curious, more than anything.

What part of the assets folder do you import the physics plug-in to? Does it go in the packages folder or just the general assets one? I’m asking because, the first time I put the VRM importer into Unity, I put it in the wrong folder so it wouldn’t work😅

so Im trying to put the locations and such in the list but I'm getting this error "MissingComponentException: There is no 'SkinnedMeshRenderer' attached to the "J_Sec_Hair1_15" game object, but a script is trying to access it."

Did every single step, still couldnt get this to work properly. The root of where the tail starts is still connected to the head, even though the rest of the tail isnt. Ive gone through everything I can trying to figure out wtf to do and I just cant figure it out

When this happen it means 1) the hair wasn't exported to NOT be joined [meaning it was joined] 2) the hair bone set wasn't moved into the new location 3) The rebone tool wasn't used on the hair bone set. 4) the rebone tool wasn't used on the strand itself.

I did one by making 3 hairs in Freehand mode on the model's back, adjusting them, texturing them, and then, I added the fins.

yes you can. Be sure when exporting you aren't combining the hair meshes when exporting

if its okay i would like advice on something Ive downloaded all that you said in the tutorial , got it to load correctly but i cant. turn the head to check the way you do is there something more I'm missing ? I'm currently working on my bunny tail to get it to stay in place , i still am learning how to make my own tail as well which is an even bigger process because its a tail like vaporeons and i have no idea where or what else i need to do i cant get the prefab thing to show up. but when i opened it it made me make save a prefab on its own. so I am not quite sure what I'm missing or if i missed steps or something i keep seeming to just be stuck getting to the next steps

You need to hit the play button in the middle, and then select scene (should auto to game). Then you select the head in the hierarchy, and you can move it with the rotation tool in the top left corner.

@@ArgamaWitch i did that , I switched back to the scene section but I couldn't right click on my self to open up the prefab you mention I opened it by finding it to the right of the program where it said to open prefab but I don't think that was the correct way I also started out haveing everything I need to move the hairbones , such but. i realized I had no bones in my tail at all so I redid it and put bones back in but then I couldn't find the rest of what I needed to put everything together. but I was also getting random errors that I couldn't quite figured out but I did follow it exactly. ima try again one more time in full and see what happens again.

The tail still reacts to the head movement. Is there a way to attach it to the butt? I'm looking everywhere but still can't figure it out

Yes, you need to use that plug in I use in there (link in the comments) in unity to get it to attach to the butt.

What version of unity are you using? I dont have a tool option. Im using unity 2018.40. And bone weight wont get onto my unity software

she is using 2019.4.2 in the video. I had your same problem with 2018.1.6 initially trying to ''Import asset'' and selecting from the folder and i resolved dragging and dropping manually the Unity package file. hope it work to you too for importing the tool

Should the unity part still work? I only see one hair group under the group 'Hairs' which is everything, head hair and tail 21:55

it wont work if they are combined, you need to make sure when exporting the hair mesh isnt combined

My ears are on a different Freehand Group from my hair but when I go to the Textures there's only one group showing and won't let me shade in the ears without coloring in the hair?

correct, you will need to make a new material for the ears so you can shade them

If the tail is made from hair, it should have colliders in it

Do you know if once your done, if there is a way to import it back into vroid, if not, are there any ways to continue editing the model, and how to import it into a tracker, or do I have to go complete the model, go to unity, and that’s it. Thanks!

Not possible, you can't open VRMs in vroid, only .vroid files. Youd have to make sure you are done with the model in vroid before attaching the tail in unity. You can do edits in unity, but pretty much its a one way street.

I can't get this to work properly and some things are very different from the tutorial now, which surprised me since this video isn't really old. All I do, step by step: - Import the UniVRM-0.73.0_af50.unitypackage plugin inside Unity. (I was using the last stable version before, UniVRM-0.66.0_39d5, with no success either.) - Click the button called VRM0 and click "Import", and import my character which is just a nude male model with the tail and nothing else. - Drag the character from the Assets list to the Hierarchy list on the left. - Since there is no "Open prefab asset" option like you show, instead I click Prefab -> Open Asset in Context. (There's another option called "Open Asset in Isolation" and many others, like Unpack). - Import the "BoneWeightTransfer.unitypackage" Inside unity, then click "Tools" -> BoneWeightTransfer. (I also tried importing both plugins before adding the character in Unity, no difference.) - Add "HairJoint(big random name)" in the first slot, Head in the second slot, Hips in the third slot. Click the button to start the plugin. - Get the error "MissingComponentException: There is no 'SkinnedMeshRenderer' attached to the "HairJoint-27e4fbf9-c5e0-4be5-8c7b-02aea77c0d31" game object, but a script is trying to access it.". - Click the "HairJoint(big random name)", and in the right panel with the infos I click Add Component -> Mesh -> Skinned Mesh Renderer. - I then click the Mesh area and change it to the one that looks like the tail. - Get the error "Bones do not match bindpose." and can't find any way to fix it. Try to run the plugin again, get the same error. - Add the Hair001 to the slot anyway and try to run the plugin, this time it says "Success" in the console. - Export and the result is a tail that spins like crazy when I move the head up/down from side view, it seems like the very base of it is properly attached to the hips, but then the next part gets attached to the head again. If anyone watching this video now was able to do it, please share which versions of everything you're using. I tried all the stables and all the "latests" versions of everything with no success for now. =(

i might be using the wrong version of unity, but it all worked until about 21:53, i only have one hair, "Hair001", (not using this tutorial for tails exactly but it still seems to be a help) how do i fix this? I selected the "change hair crosssection" button when exporting i think so that might be related Edit: Crossection isnt related, what do i do D:

when you export the model you need to make sure "combine hair mesh" isn't selected

Silly question: How are you getting mirror control points to work? It only does one at a time for me. Also I appreciate the video even if I'm late. Its helping me alot to go through these.

@@ArgamaWitch Thanks. I guess it was a issue with a older version. Getting the latest version solved it. Originally I tried to use mirror but it wouldn't work specifically for control point editing. My vroid was like 4 months old though so my bad. I appreciate the videos and responses to small questions in comments c:

hello argma :3 your tutorial was very helpfull. however on the bone changing part in unity it seams that your first pass on to move the hairJoint is not needed because it does not contain the bone itself, it's the hair## that has the reference of the bone needed. aslong has you have moved the joint to the hips then use the tool on the hair## it will work :3 notice that you did get an error on the hairjoint because the tool cannot access it it does not know what to do with it. thank you again for the tutorial keep up the work :3

I do both because sometimes if I dont, there have been issues, but its not always the case. So just in case I do both.

Hey Argama! Thanks for the tutorials, they've helped me a lot in making my model. I just have one problem; when i go to look at the individual hairs in unity, for whatever reason, it's counting it all as one hair rather than giving me each individual hair. Idk what to do about it and was hoping you could help me.

when exporting your model you need to uncheck combine hair group. You can see it at 19:23

@@ArgamaWitch I figured it out. There is another box in the covert for Vrchat box that allows you to uncheck for combining meshes. That seemed to solve my issue.

if you added the tail so it doesnt have gaps, the only thing I have to ask is if you reattached it properly in Unity because it shouldn't float away if you did

I'm having trouble exporting my vrm after fixing her tail, wings, and accessories to not move with her head. I'm using Unity 2019.4.27f1 and UniVRM 0.53.0. When I go to export my model it says "Require animator.avatar".

I can't get the tail bones / animation right. When I'm watching this video I see you click onto 2 different layers with different settings for the tail. I tried both settings but can't get a tail to stay attached / close to the back. Any advice? :3

I assume you are in the unity part? Once in unity after you open your prefab, move the tail bones to the hip layer, be sure to transfer your bones with the transfer too. Then do the transfer of each strand of hair too for the tail

Amazing looking avatar, but oh my god, 100k triangles and no material reduction. I am gonna guess the number is inflated by that hat, which is not included in the final mesh. Still, low-spec players in VRChat will hate you if they don't have the avatar filter on. Having multiple materials is really bad as instead of the GPU rendering a mesh just once, it has to render it multiple times, which is why I recommend to use as few materials as possible. I also noticed not going into mesh simplification and ticking off on removing transparent parts. What this does is that it removes parts of the mesh that is made invisible by the texture as it still has to be rendered. Taking the time to remove the parts of the body texture that will not be visible will trim of a decent amount of triangles depending on how much of the body is made invisible. My current avatar is about 12k triangles, though I did export it without material reduction as I then imported the model into Blender, used CATS plugin to fix the model and then used CATS material combiner to combine everything into a single material using a 4096x4096 texture atlas. After setting up shading and the material within Unity, my textures and shading maps came in on about 5mb (medium quality with crunch compression at 100%) ranging from 512x512 to 4096x4096 depending on their use. Minor perceivable loss in quality as it is mostly flat shaded. Sometimes... I really do wish VRChat had some stricter limits on PC to encourage people to optimize their avatars.

This is not a VRChat avatar, and there are limitations on importing Avatars. You can reduce andnoptize for VRchat, but as I'm using this for vtuber tracking, I dont really need to worry about it loading in for other people.
