In this video, I show how I practice the first half of this piece, with special emphasis on phrasing and how to play the long slur half-way through with ease. I'm also applying the Alexander Technique to everything I do.

This is such a great video! I've stopped playing at 19. I'm now 23 and I would like to get playing again, I can't wait to be able to play this again :)

There’s a song sparrow who lives not far from me here in Cincinnati (also!), but she hasn’t been coming around lately-maybe because she doesn’t need to hear me trying to revive the C Major Fugue! I wonder if your bird likes to hear you playing outside, definitely not interested in leaving you. Just as a favor, you could record and post this fugue on RU-vid! BTW, love your Chaconne-stands as your unique version among the great recordings of this magnificent work.

I don't have any plans to re-learn the fugue any time soon, but I'll definitely upload it to YT if I ever do! (Just don't hold your breath! ;)

@@JenniferRoigFrancoli Thank you so much for answering, Jennifer. I’m pretty familiar with Ciaconna by now with all the recordings made, and also I’ve played this, though not at your level! I first heard this music when I was 13 in 1956, in a cello [!] arrangement by Laszlo Varga, principal cellist of the NY Phil, who played this as an encore to the Dvorak Concerto in Chautauqua, NY. I actually met Laszlo in Sarasota, Florida, much later in life, a couple years before he died. He told me that when he announced the encore, the entire orchestra sighed, realizing that it would be another 15 min until their cigarette break! BTW, I especially liked how you played a simple short passage (at about 7:20). It’s probably just me, but this part seems like the heart or soul of the entire piece, something like the Pastoral Symphony in The Messiah. You might like Hélène Grimaud’s rendition of Busoni’s version (with the pastoral passage at about 8:45 and wisps of this melody returning slightly later in the left hand): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dOHiI_5yycU.html

At the very beginning, do you prefer starting in first position open D or third position, 2nd finger D on G string? Please explain why. Thanks.

She starts with 2 but ive seen players start with 3 and later playing b with 1

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it, Maria! No, I'm sorry - I don't have all the fingerings in my part. I use the Bach facsimile, and do most things in 1st position.

Instead of going through all that effort to do that big famous slur, why not break the slur up into two bows?

Hi Sean, thanks for watching my video! There's a quick and easy answer to this question: because that's how Bach, who was a fantastic violinist who played his own compositions, wrote it. :) Also, it's a good challenge!

I started it one month ago. After two weeks on the starting 10 bars, I recorded and found my play was so poor-lacking of tempo (like pile individual sound together, not flowing in a river) and no strong-weak change. Then I followed your performance many times (just for these bars), I found it is better. But it is still not to the feeling of dance hall centuries ago or church style. It is a long long way to go for a hobby player. It is a big gap between a professional violinist and armature one. Seems the bowing and fingering so simple and no high level skill is required ( not like Carmen Fantasy). Judge my records by myself or family member: like a child just starts playing. Even though I have played all etudes of RCM 8. This Allemande looks like the music of Tudor (TV series) in dancing halls, or Blood Wedding in Game of Thrones.
