Back in 2008 I put up a picture tutorial for making a Biscornu on an old blog (I'll link it below) and thought it was about time I worked up a video tutorial for the channel. I've been really into my cross stitch since the UK went into Lockdown in 2020, you may have noticed, and was itching to make another.
If you've been stitching for a while then you may have seen the word Biscornu before, or even seen them made up on various Social media platforms. It is a french word and according to Google, is an adjective meaning; skewed, misshapen, quirky, irregular and bizarre. I know it as an octagonal stuffed ornamental pincushion.
They are generally created by offsetting two squares of stitching and pulling the center in tight, however there are also patterns for 15 sided Biscornus for the more adventurous stitcher. The pattern I have used is 'Mini Snowflakes' from @TheUrbanStitches on Instagram and can be found on Etsy here: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/85130...
I've used Red Zweigart 14Ct Aida and Blanc DMC thread.
Materials needed:
2 squares of stitching
Needle and thread
Toy stuffing
2 buttons/beads
Scissors
Optional extras:
Wire wool,
Seed beads
As mentioned in the video, these work a little smoother when the squares are of an even amount of stitches as it's one less stitch to complete.

I hope you enjoy making along with me and I look forward to seeing your finished makes. Please feel free to tag me over on Instagram @TheHouseOfLangford and @Overillsews or head over to my Facebook page 'The House of Langford' and group 'House of Langford's Wear it, Share it'.

Once you make one you'll find yourself making more lol. It's been too long since I made one. The 15 sided biscornu I mention in the description was made in 2011 and took a little while to do lol

Thankyou for your comments. I didn't list it specifically as I know people have different preferences for fabric to cross stitch onto. I usually work on evenweave but find aida is a little more rigid and holds up better to being stitched together in this way.

Great tutorial! Your instructions are clear, and your camera work is perfect, so clear and easy to see where you’re stitching. I am understanding that your squares are an odd number of stitches, and that is the reason you are going through the center stitch 2x while turning each corner? Thank you so much!
@TheHouseOfLangford
@TheHouseOfLangford 2 года назад
Thankyou so much for your lovely comments. Yes tht is correct due to the odd number of stitches. If your squares are an equal number then you won't need to do this. Enjoy making x

At the very very beginning the pin cushion you show is coral in color. I would love to purchase Aida cloth in that color but I’ve never seen it sold. Where did you get it? Thank you for a creative tutorial! ❤

Hi there, thank you for watching, I'm afraid the biscornu shown at the very start is the one I made during the tutorial and the fabric is red. I may have filmed the intro later in the day and the lighting isn't brilliant I'm afraid making it look a different colour. Apologies

Thanks for a great tutorial! What do you do when you run out of thread during the sewing process? How do you end and begin again?
@TheHouseOfLangford
@TheHouseOfLangford 2 года назад
I tie the thread off by stitching through the previous/next stitch and then tuck the end of the thread inside. To start again I use a loop start with my thread and stitch back into the stitches just complete before moving on. Hope this helps x

What type of material did you use? Looks stiffer than regular Aida cloth

Hi there, it is zweigart aida unwashed so the starch is still present in the fabric.
