Wonderful video Denis...I was playing along with you and also felt I wanted to reach that F# in the first bar with the left hand! What would be the reason? Thank you for your amazing explanations about technique and musicality. I feel I've learned more here in your channel than anywhere else. THANKS A LOT

This is a very beautiful prelude. A good preparation to approach Etude op 25 no 7, learning to sing with the left hand. Similar difficulties. One should study Chopin preludes as you have explained it in this video. The musical and technical aspects are almost as the same level as his etudes in a simplified manner. Thank you for your precise insights on this piece. FYI I have finished memorizing the Etude op 8 no 12 from Scriabin and started to shaping it. But I’m still waiting for your video on that piece since I consider your guidance extremely helpful to bring a piece to a more professional level.

Feel honored thanks; but unfortunately no chance it can happen earlier than mid spring for a bunch of reasons.

Hey in case you’re around, I have just found a master thesis on the topic, didn’t go too far yet, but the start looks quite promising, have a look: ukzn-dspace.ukzn.ac.za/bitstream/handle/10413/8880/Combrink_Albert_Christiaan_1992.pdf?sequence=1&isAllowed=y

Good evening Denis I would like to know if your set of lessons on Chopin preludes includes any advice on fingering to use please? I would like to learn number 13, and I can't find any tutorial on this subject Thanks you

You can find pretty good fingering suggestions by comparing different editions: Ekier, Henle, Paderewski… Many of them are accessible at imslp.org

It shouldn't be wet or maudlin. Arrau said about Beethoven that p should be healthy. The same is true of this piece (even though itx chopin not Beethoven)

In my opinion, it may. Although I would use less negative words such as morbid, intimate, and muffled. First of all, Beethoven and Chopin are way too different in their aesthetics. Secondly, whatever you choose to believe about how to play them is basically a transcription to a modern instrument, which has just a very different sound and acoustic properties, and vastly different mechanics. Thirdly, Beethoven doesn’t have many long pedals or sotto voce indications, while in Chopin's works you may find plenty of such indications, and pedal for the duration of the whole bar. Of course, such pedaling was meant for historic instruments, but nevertheless, it shows a favorable attitude. For example, in romantic music (Schumann, Chopin, Liszt), it’s allowed to pedal through rests, while in Beethoven (except specific spots in late works), pedaling through rests is largely a taboo. It’s just a small example about the difference in Aesthetics between classical and romantic styles. Regarding characters, Beethoven depicted the epic path of Humanity in Cosmos, while Chopin concentrated on pain and intimate feelings of a man. Stylistically, they should sound as different as possible, in my opinion.
