Sound artist Matt Yocum (Pet Sematary, The Cloverfield Paradox) joins us for another exclusive dialogue editing tutorial, this time focusing on the signal processing chain, plug-in layout, and noise reduction techniques. Matt demonstrates his workflow on a clip from How to Deter a Robber, using tools like iZotope RX, Waves WNS, and more.
It is important to note however, that there are dozens of different processes and workflows, and you do not have to use the same exact plug-ins as the ones utilized in this tutorial to accomplish the same result. It is far more important to understand how plug-ins work and what they DO, to apply them in your own editing work.

A little tip, if you don't like waves plugins, you can substitute WNS for Bertom Audio Denoiser Classic which is free and works the exact same way. They also have a pro version which lets you set the threshold of each band separately. Great tools and you won't have to worry about waves update policy.

Another brilliant video from Matt! Thanks very much for making this. I was wondering about your plugin chain in the last video and you answered every question I had. Your explanation of your process and thoughts through it have helped me understand and improve my own workflow so I’m very thankful. Lovely stuff.

Nothing beats Matt...Future tutorials I would love to see would be you sound designing for a fantasy or sci fi sequence and in another tutorial seeing how you approach taking all of these individual sound effect elements and pan them around to match location on screen.

Great Tutorial. I've been looking foward to more stuff from you. I was wondering if you have tried Clarity VX pro from Waves? Their new noise reduction Plug-in. If so, what are your thoughts and do you see yourself including in your workflow? Looking forward to your next tutorial.

What's your approach to bus processing of dialogue? Do you generally compress / limit dialogue in the bus, especially when working on TV / streaming content?

I love how you explain it, super interesting! One question: When it is necessary to remove reverb from the room, in what order of the plugin chain would you insert "De-reverb" or any of the plugins that are dedicated to it? THANKS!!

Hey Matt. Would you say Gullfoss can do the same thing as you did with Soothe 2? I own Gullfoss, but I don't see a reason why to get Soothe 2 as well, as I think ir can also do what you did in this video. Thanks!

I do all of my mixing in Avid Media Composer. I use iZotope RX already. Do the plug ins you use here work within Media Composer or are they strictly for Pro Tools? Thanks!
@Myocum93
@Myocum93 2 года назад
Hey Arnie, I believe Media Composer supports any AAX plugin! You should be able to use any of the ones I showed since Pro Tools is also only capable of using AAX plugins

Do you insert limiter on dialogue chain to achieve different loudness standard?
@adelaudio
@adelaudio 2 года назад
in post, the limiters are on the bus, not on individual tracks. keep in mind you do have 500-1000 tracks on a standard movie. 2000-3000 easily on a big budget action movie.
@keisoundhk
@keisoundhk 2 года назад
@@adelaudio I understand that. So refer to my question, will you insert limiter on dialogue bus to achieve different loudness standard
@Myocum93
@Myocum93 2 года назад
@@keisoundhk hey there! I put a limiter on each stem but only set to -.01True Peak on film because there’s no loudness spec. For streaming or broadcast I set it at -2dBFS true peak. Notice my limiters in each case are only set to catch the very top of the peaks and keep them under, not to increase or decrease the overall level of the dialogue. That just takes time and practice using volume. If you find you’re globally over or below you can just globally move a master trim up or down to compensate for example if you want to keep the relative volume of the dialogue the same.
@keisoundhk
@keisoundhk 2 года назад
@@Myocum93thanks! Wondering if anyone put a limiter on master fader if mixing 5.1/7.1 movie?
@Myocum93
@Myocum93 2 года назад
@@keisoundhk yes. Same thing on all stems. DX, FX, and MX each have their own limiters regardless of output channel width
