Although this video has one of the most longest and complicated names in the world (!), I guarantee it's a lot simpler to make than to say!
With that in mind, I've approached the teaching of the block assuming that you have a fair understanding of how Foundation Paper-Piecing works. If you're new to the technique, perhaps have a look at this video first • TUTORIAL: Foundation P... and then come back to this one.
So like I say in the video, this is my own pattern, naively made in 2013. So after a few requests and suggestions to make this block, here it is for you to explore, fold, pin, stitch and rip apart!!
GET THE PATTERN: goo.gl/osCW3s
The list of tools I used...
- Brother Innovis 200QE sewing machine
- Brother 1/4" sewing foot
- Gutermann polyester thread
- Fiskars Rotary Blade and Cutting Mat
- Sew Easy Rulers
- UHU Glue Stick
- Triumph Craft Scissors
- Birch Non-Melt Flower Head Quilting Pins
- Clover Thread Snips goo.gl/5JlHVE
- Clover Serrated Tracing Wheel goo.gl/kS3aoi
- Clover Finger Presser goo.gl/IOXilY
- A tonne of scrap fabric strips

My children and I have sat here on different days watching some of your tutorials, and this one is fantastic! I've made one block already as a "tester", and now all 4 of my little ones want me to make them little lap quilts with this pattern... two of them have already chosen their fabrics hehe. Thank you very much for yet another wonderfully informative tutorial!!

This is a great tutorial. I bought a kit because the finished product was so pretty. I had no clue what paper piecing was. The kit was obviously for more skilled sewers as the instructions stated" stitch in numerical order" Following this tutorial I was able to complete my project. yea!!

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I am wanting to paper piece a Union Jack using Tula Pink's Elizabeth line and this video helped me tremendously. I love the idea of using the tracing wheel to outline the seams so the paper comes off easily. One other suggestion I have from doing strip piecing is to set your stitch length to 2 or less. It will perforate the paper which will peel off a little more easily.
@AmandaRolfe
@AmandaRolfe 7 лет назад
Yes, shortening the stitch length is always something I forget to mention! I agree, it does makes peeling the paper away a lot easier. :)

Your fabric selections are always like candy! Could you make a video talking about how you select fabrics? You just have a really unique sense of color and pattern. I keep wondering if you stick with the same brand, or have a tendency toward modern or florals, some little trick that makes your combinations sparkle so.
@AmandaRolfe
@AmandaRolfe 9 лет назад
knitinknit Thanks so much! My trick to choosing fabrics is to just simply pick out a main fabric and match other fabrics with similar colours. I like it particularly when prints clash i.e. Florals and Spots or a bold Floral with a Geometric print. And then I'll throw in a solid colour if I feel things are getting a bit too out of hand! Generally, I tend to gravitate towards bold geometric type prints, spots and stripes. Sometimes I like a good little novelty print depending on the subject and quality. I do also love a good old fashion floral! Liberty floral fabrics are my favourite!! :D But that's a really great suggestion for a future video I could do! Thanks! It's on the list!

Does anyone know if there is a formula to increase the PDF by to enlarge the block to a "standard" size? When I measure the block w/o manipulating the PDF it measures 5 7/8" x 5 3/4" finished - and the selvages are between 3/16" to a hair shy of 1/4"? - help please?
