They sony mirrorless cameras have a feature in their time-lapse app that has an AE tracking feature that changes the exposure for you when doing day to night time-lapses. I can't imagine having to stand in front of the camera to make long time lapses and have to manually fiddle with the settings in between each frame. Kudos to you!

Thanks so much for posting this. Even though, I have been using LRTimelapse and Genie Mini for quite some time, but watching this video was a pleasure no matter you know what you doing or just a beginner. Many people tried to explain Holy Grail in LRTimelapse, but this is the best one ever. I wish Syrp would take care of the App freezing on me most of the tome and upgrade the App so it could automatically Bramp (Bulb+Ramping) in Bull Mode just like Radian (The Dark Side!) did from the beginning. Changing the settings on the camera while shooting is exhausting and impractical etc., for longer time-lapses or at night.
@seawildearth
@seawildearth 8 лет назад
+M Potter thanks for posting. With regards to the ramping through the Holy Grail period you will only really be busy for about an hour or so. Once you reach optimum darkness not a lot will change and you can just concentrate on supervising the safety of the rig etc. I like the aspect of ease that apps and technology allow but personally I don't want to have all of the challenges removed. That makes things too easy, lessens the sense of accomplishment etc.

Mark Chia Are you high?! or stuck in 2010? The Sony E mount is the most versatile mount on any camera system! The fact that the sensor is so close to the mount makes it easy to adapt any lens. You can use anything from EF, to PL, to FD, Leica, Minolta, Nikon and many more! Sony Zeiss glass is way better then any Canon L lens. That's why most pros use Zeiss CP2s for alot of movies. Do some more research. Sony does have quite a few lenses but it's the adapters that extend your options! Another cool thing is a speed booster! You can get an EF to E and with this will allow you to do is (On an APSC camera) make the lens a full frame lens then if it's a F4 lens, it will make it a F2.8. You will NEVER get anything more versatile then the Sony E mount.
@mcrksman
@mcrksman 7 лет назад
Are u illiterate? Or did u just not bother to read my comment properly? I'm obviously talking about native lenses when I say it doesn't have a lot of lenses. And even thought they do have a decent range now they're all pretty ex compared to 3rd party brands. And I don't have a million $ to spend on cameras so I have done my research and I do use adapters and Tamron lenses.

Thanks for the great video. I just tried the same technique with my new Syrp Genie Mini. I wonder how you manage to touch your camera without moving it and thus disturbing the movement. Unfortunately my Syrp Genie is always a littel loose when and only the slightest touch will move the whole camera. I am quiet frustraded. D you also have this problem or might I have an production error in my Genie Mini? Thanks

@photobomb6186

Hi Mark. Thanks for giving your time and all the information . With regards ramping the shutter speed to adjust for exposure. Would you recommend a gradual adjustment of say open up 1 stop over 25 frames. Or just get to the correct exposure as quick as possible say with in 4 frames ? Does the LR time lapse need to see a jump in exposure in order to find the key frames ? Thanks Mike
@seawildearth
@seawildearth 7 лет назад
Hi Mike. LRTimelapse doesn't seek to detect light changes due to ISO or Shutter adjustments. It simply renders the incremental changes in each frame, irrespective how small they may be, so that over the course of time between two keyframes they result in the continuous and flowing final clip without any noticeable flicker.

You didn't show the last part where LRTimelapse renders the video, but with the latest version, you can apply the crop there, rather than mucking around in Lightroom doing it. I don't know if that was the case with version 4 of LRTimelapse.

Thank you! This video clarified many of the doubts I have regarding time lapse photography from day to night. One question. Would it be okay to set ISO to Auto and let the camera adjust the ISO and I just focus on the shutter speed?
@seawildearth
@seawildearth 8 лет назад
+yeo lily Hi Yeo. Setting the ISO to Auto in the urban environment may not be a great idea, I understand that you are ramping and in Manual shooting mode but given a busy traffic intersection you may get drastic light level changes as the flow of traffic changes from one direction to another. This will have the camera continually compensating for that creating a greater incidents of 'pumping' and therefore compounding the complexity of the edit. With a fixed ISO and the fact that you're shooting Manual and have lots of leeway with the RAW files in post which I prefer.
@sgyeolily

It's not ideal because it causes unwanted flickering in your timelpase, and your exposure will jump around a lot.

Mark, does the Genie need to connected to the camera to operate? Or can one have an internal intervalometer control the camera and the Genie just does the rotation as programmed? Also, while panning does the Genie do the stop shoot move trick or is it a constant pan motion?
@SyrpLab
@SyrpLab 7 лет назад
Hey Peter - the Genie Mini does need to be connected to the camera to operate if you're doing a move-shoot-move time-lapse movement like Mark is. This is an option that you can select when using the Mini and is recommended when shooting long exposure. The Link Cable that is supplied with the Genie Mini will ensure the shutter fires at the correct time - you can set up the Genie Mini without a link cable but it's very difficult to get it in sync with an internal intervalometer. Thanks!

I'm planning to make a time lapse with a transition from sunset to night and Milky Way. For that I would need to change the interval of the time lapse, does anyone have any ideas on how to do that? If I take interval very long and change the shutter speed on the go then the sunset won't be smooth. And seems like I cannot change the interval in genie mini on the go
@SyrpLab
@SyrpLab 7 лет назад
Hey there, once a time-lapse has been started with the Genie Mini, the interval can't be changed. Depending on your camera and lens, you'll need a 30 second shutter (or close to, once again depending on your camera) to get the right exposure for the Milky Way portion. A solution would be to use the long interval length throughout your time-lapse and then for any flicker through your sunset portion, use LRTimelapse to remove. Thanks!

@SyrpLab
@SyrpLab 7 лет назад
That's completely up to you. If you feel like it's in a sheltered safe place, then go ahead an leave it if you're comfortable. The Genie Mini doesn't need the App to be open and nearby for the whole time-lapse, so once you hit record, you can close the App and walk away and the time-lapse will continue as set.

How many cf cards and batteries do you use for a project like this?
@SyrpLab
@SyrpLab 7 лет назад
It depends on the size of card you use and your camera, and the length of your time-lapse! It may take some trial an error on working out how long you can do a time-lapse with the gear you have but I don't believe Mark needed a second battery or card for this time-lapse. Thanks!
