So, I'm not too happy with this tutorial anymore, so I've since updated it! Check out the newest version here! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e4SahLP1yI0.html
“I’m going to assume you know how to use clip studio on a basic level” Me, who has been using it for three years: well this will be eas- “And that maybe you know what a vector layer is” Me: * heavy sweating *
@Fahim Ali idk man, I didn’t bother to read the instructions manual at first because I was excited about doing digital art for the first time, and now it feels like it’d be boring to go through all of the stuff I already know.
Animation layers contain the full structure of your drawing- clip studio has the option to use the same layers in each folder every time. It's like every part of the frames contained in a folder! Good luck to those who try and animate! (PS if you think it's easier to do simple animations try exporting your individual drawing, turn down the opacity and draw over it on another layer and put it into gifmaker.me)

@Hayden The Gaming Artist Mk so u see that one layer there that's just white? that's the background now to make a new layer. There's already an auto generated layer there. If you look a little upper you will see options like "new raster layer" or "New Vector layer" or "New Layer folder" if you put your cursor there. In the options there's that one basic looking like option that has a "+" press it and that's how you make a new layer. (I'm also 11 but I just became 12 by November 🤡) If you need any help I'll try my best to help
"no" "don't do that" "or you will die" Bro that's what we do as artists: We pour our heart and soul into what we do, get two notes on tumblr, and then shrink and die in a corner before we are resurrected with black magic and do it all over again
GOD i wish you were around when i first got CSP, i tried animating and did the 1 frame a second thing you reverbed not to do because I WAS A BIG DUMB DUMB
@@Zedrinbot thank you! I think i kinda figured it out But its still a bit confusing I got clip studio on Mobile though, maybe it's a bit different, i don't know. It won't let me move frames if its not at least 3 frames long And if I add a frame inbetween, it connect to the next frame, so I have to make frames at the end and just move them back 🤷♀️
Yo, your kind of humor really made this work for me. Trying to get into CSP's animation portion is so daunting because of the videos/ tutorials being too wordy with their vocabulary or bland. It makes me zone out way too much. But I like your video because it's like you're snapping your fingers at their dog to get their attention. Yes, I'm saying that I'm the dog in this situation.
this might sound dumb but i usually avoid instructional videos because i have a really hard time focusing after a couple minutes with my ADHD,,, but the memes you added helped keep me engaged! i really wish there were more teachers that implemented humor into their teaching while still being helpful and informative, it makes a world of difference for me
For me humor's always made things memorable, which made it easier to retain. I remember a lot from my psychology courses cause that professor was witty, but nothing from my C++ courses.
@@Zedrinbot i agree completely! obviously i have weak subjects in school, but a great teacher can really boost my work ethic and desire to learn the material. it's just unfortunate that a lot of my math teachers and my one coding teacher made me feel like i was slipping into a coma every class. anyway, thank you for your reply! I honestly wasn't expecting you to see this, especially so quickly haha
Hey Zedrin, I'm a big fan of yours and also animate using CSP, did you know that just like specifying a vector as the first frame to make others a vector layer, you can add layer folders and any cell afterwards has the same folder structure and layer names inside, I think this makes having multiple elements way easier to manage.
Interesting, I'll have to try that. That'd definitely be a huge help for organization and simplification, though the tradeoff is you can't do a universal lineart reference / do the faster navigation via clicking in the timeline. I could see that being exceptionally useful for more complex coloring / shading, while using the separate animation folder for lineart.
This tutorial covered a LOT of ground in a relatively short time, which is great for some people, but confusing for others. If you're looking for something that's a bit slower paced, I've designed an OFFICIAL tutorial series over on the official channel! You can check out the series with the first video here: ru-vid.com/group/PLzSHl36nXG14ZerXV7DAudYUcvNwZFRN_ This series goes a lot more in depth over the animation process and covers things a bit more thoroughly. Each week a new part of the series will go up, to a total of 6 videos, so look forward to it!
Hopefully this tutorial was enough to get you started. Animation's hard work and it probably still feels daunting, but it gets way easier when you don't have to wrestle with the program to do it. btw, obligatory shill, I have some new merch available! crowdmade.com/collections/zedrin Anyway, I've also got a livestream today. I'm gonna be trying to learn a program of my own, and messing with blender: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iK5iJUBqZNg.html Also, for comments unironically trying to argue the pronunciation of "gif", please see the disclaimer at 12:01
@@Nyxanightlypoet dude! Cut him some slack you've just seen how much time animation takes so chill and give him some time! As an semi-artist I too find it very VERY enoying when people keep saying: "Are you done yet!? When are you done?! ARE YOU DONRLE YE-" DUDE JUST LEAVE THE ARTIST ALONE!! HE'S A SENSIBLE HUMAN BEING AND NEEDS HIS COMFORT!!! sry just had to let that demon out of me.... What I'm trying to say is just pls don't.... He's but a man... don't push him...
zedrin! ya didnt explain file objects! they're basicly symbols and can replace folders entirely so you can bone animate. nevermind, its not super worth it really just use flash
i swear ive watched this like 4 times and i just... dont Understand™ i dont understand how csp can be so far ahead of the game and also be so behind with this overly complicated layout when krita, a free program, has a much cleaner workflow i do appreciate your video though, i reference it every time i try test animations in CSP
*thumbs down for pronouncing GIF as JIF* *thumbs up for the Grade A "Choosy artists choose JIF" pun* No but seriously this was hella helpful. Thanks for the fun explanation!
i would recommend exporting the animation as a movie, it makes it an mp4 with whichever framerate you want and you dont have to edit each cell together may i ask why you prefer image sequence?
Image sequences are perfectly lossless, while MP4 has compression going on. If you want to add in audio / dialog, and then reexport it witht hat, it's better to have a full image sequence instead. If you just wanna go straight to video without any further editing and you don't want a gif, video export is fine.
Bonus tip for the complex characters part... use the 3d model editor that comes with CSP. Make a 3d model using blender or w/e you would like to use, edit it with the CSP software, import it into CSP and use that model. It will save you so much time, so long as the character is super complex.
I dont think most people who want to 2d animate know blender, however there are several sites to download basic models (or also models from games etc if you want to be face but idk if you can Import those haha)
I know that cel animation can be confusing, but I find it more convenient as you can make a frame last as long as you like instead of just copying frame after frame (like I did when I used Flipaclip)
I animated a fan animation of Yoimiya with clip studio paint and this really helped! I use EX instead of PRO tho. But every setting is just the same tbh
EX basically just means you can use it for longer shots and scenes, since it has no cap on frame counts. You *could* do it in Pro but man would it be tedious :v
Thanks for the tips! As far as importing your image sequences into Premiere goes, you can set your default fps for importanting in preferneces to 24fps rather than 30fps. I don't remember when I learned that, but its super helpful if you primarily use Premiere for 24fps animation.
Yep, you can change defaults from the preferences. You can also right click an image sequence and click "Interpret Footage" to set it to a different framerate.
Thanks so much for your time, you are a wonderful person, believe me it's not for everyone! I wish you all the best you wish, thank you very much again! You are for me the light in total darkness! Imagine that I am unemployed, I have no money to buy a course, with you I am learning a lot..
thank god i animate using clip studio paint and previously there were only like two tutorials it's a nightmare learning a new program when you don't have a reference
Learning new stuff sometimes is incredibly frustrating, I'm trying to animate and following step by steff but I can't do simple stuff like ADD A KEYFRAME, the buttom is there but gray'd out and can't be clicked
This was the single most comprehensive tutorial for animation without over analyzing on unnecessary steps. Good job, Subbed!! I use tahoma 2d. But I use clip studio to illustrate for my comic book issues.. just wondering if you could do a tutorial on lip syncing in clip studio as well?
Hey! Thank you for making the only comprehensive hand animation tutorial from CSP I've managed to find! After years of frustration and suffering I might actually be able to animate a thing properly in this program without wanting to evaporate 5 seconds in
Me, having an animation deadline in 9 days: "I know how to animate in Krita and After Effects and I've been using CSP for two years, this can't be that much of a difference!" Haha Hah Ha....
I used to have this issue in CSP where when I import audio it doesn't work. It gets imported, yes, BUT - there was no soundwaves, no audio, nothing. Just the layer. Here's how to fix that: The reason - The reason this happens is because the codec of the file is unsupported, even if the format is correct, that doesn't change the codec. I don't know how to see or change the codec of a file,, but I did find a way to get around this. The fix - What I do it, I save my file (which doesn't work right away because of the site I use), feed it into an audio editing software/website (In my case, I use soundtrap because I have a subscription, but others work too), you can edit it or just leave it, do whatever. Save that version, delete the original file from your computer (for the sake of your storage) and the new file should work. If it doesn't,, just try use soundtrap haha it's free and it works for me
This video is a cunning trick by what I can on,to assume is a sadist who takes pleasure in causing pain to new animators. I assure you, if give a choice between animation in csp and stabbing yourself in the crotch, take the stabbing every time. You’ll understand when csp just straight up forgets how to put frames on the timeline, forbids access to drawing in layers, starts auto arranging your manually set key frame lengths and decides that 11 frames is a secret command for self termination while taking the recent list with you. Please, just draw the frames manually and compile them with ffmpeg, you’ll thank me later.
i'm broke and dont have enough for EX so ive found a way to get full leangth animations with only PRO. Basically you need to animate as much as you can with the 24 frames (depends on what fps your using) and then your going to save/export that. Then, your going to save the last frame of the animation and put it into a new file. the rinse and repeat and after a painfully long time you can throw the entire thing into an editing sofware and fit them in like a puzzle. it'll probably be a bit messy, but it''ll be decent (:
12:56 I'm a video editor and I got Graphic Tab so I could animate images from manga comics and after edit them! Any good course to recommend me for 2D animation? Note: If you want a nice smooth video at least you need 30fps. It suits much better on the human eye.
I feel the need to give you and others this tip. Right click your cel layer that you've drawn on, and select the option "Create Folder and Insert Layer". You can now use a folder for your cel and your 1 cel can now have any number of layers from sketch to clean up instead of stacking animation folders on top of each other and struggling with the excessive amount of layers spread out in the layer panel. It's much easier on your first cel to insert into a folder with a right click then name your layers sketch, cleanup etc and go from there. Each new cel will automatically have the folder created for the next frame once you do this. It will have an identical number of layers inside saving you the time of adding them again. This can be done with the iPad version as well. Try it out. I think you'll find it's much easier to animate with and far less cluttered. It makes it easier to use 1 animation folder if all your cels are inserted into a folder. If you manually add a folder for your cel, rename it to the cel number so it will work properly, go to timeline and rightclick and select that number to see it appear in the timeline if it doesn't appear for whatever reason. This is especially important if you want to use keyframes with camera effects for different animation folders later in your project. You won't have to copy and paste those camera keyframes across multiple animation folders if you organise it this way for an individual character.
hi! i'm at the 4-minute mark of your video, and I like the pace you made. You went right to the point, made it amusing in a short amount of time without being blahblah like other videos. thank you ^^
Just changing my drawing app from AAnimate to CSP cuz why not.. and turns out the difference is little! Thank you so much! Your explanation is top point! Very easy to learn.
ok i admit i laughed a bit watching you draw a circle for the head several times bc same, been there, absolutely struggled with that so many times before anyways i've been using photoshop to animate up until this point, and honestly, this seems SO much easier, bc it's like combining the convenience of flash with the actual ability to draw something reasonably good like in photoshop (flash's drawing software is horrible, i hate it so much) so thanks for the tutorial!
I don't like Clip Studio Paint's GIF exporter when exporting anything with gradients. The gradients become all ugly from the compression, I instead export as an image sequence and then turn the sequence into a GIF.

Imo krita is the best experience I've had animating Clip is clunky and horrible for animation my god. the drawing that shows up in the "cel" or layer depends on the name so if you rename it your old "layer" is still there but just doesn't get used...it's like referencing a variable or something. Then there's the duplication of frame 2 becoming 2a and for some reason they're linked and changing one changes the other one two?!? What the fuck? Yeah no thanks clip I'll just sit comfy in krita when it comes to animation where a layer just has frames you draw on and that's it...no cells or folders and linked cells and all that bull. Don't get me wrong clip is amazing for anything else but animation in there is so clunky it's like they tried to organize it and make it look "cool" but went WAAAY overboard to the point that it made it more confusing.
just got a cintiq after 7 years of wanting and now im chillin here sky high on the zaza CRYING MY EYES OUT at all the features ive suddenly got access to :’)
your results might output at a lower resolution as CSP likes to try and make a 'recommended' resolution for GIFs that's like, 75% the size. Just check your export settings.
the reason why I mostly don't use keyboard shortcuts is because the creators of krita were kind enough to make almost everything you need easily accessible. ;___; unfortunately krita does not have vector animation yet. Switching to CSP is torture and I miss my pop-up pallete, and My ref. Image tool, and the mirror tool. I suppose I'll live for now...
I've made my animation and I'm trying to upload it onto youtube now, but when I export as a movie and save it as an mp4 file, it doesn't work when processing the video, when I try to save it as an avi file it does the same. Could you please tell me how to fix this please?
New to using CSP, figured that my experience with PS would be enough to let me just to explore CSP in general to pick up the differences. Then I felt inspired to try a lil animation, saw the animation folder and realized I was not going to be able to intuit myself through this. This is an excellent video, thank you for sharing, I'm sure I'll be referencing this a lot!
