My wife and I are trying to be completely off grid. We have purchased property in Northern Nevada (mountainous) and will have 7.3 kilowatt of solar/48 volt Absolyte GNB Battery Bank. I am looking purchasing a used KESTREL 48 volt wind turbine to supply power when the sun is not shining. Your video is great for assisting me in comprehending how to "dump" excess power - I fear burning up a battery bank...for good reason. I have subscribed and I hope your videos can assist us in completing what we need to. Blessings to you and your Family!

👍 My dear "Off-the-Grid" specialist! 👍 I am Austrian and American English is not my mother tongue, but German. I'm also not an electrician, electronics technician or anyone else who has a job related to electricity. But I can read circuit diagrams and it would really be very helpful if a professional like you are one, could briefly show such a quick drawn schematic. I do not know how many of your subscribers do not speak English as their first language, but I think it could help many! Thank you very much for your attention and best regards from Austria!

Dude, I wanted to thank you for somewhere in your videos proposing SCRs to redirect my panels energy to other devices when my battery’s were fully charged. At 12 noon on sunny days my battery’s are fully charged. At that point they start the dance… the controllers stop providing energy, let my batteries handle the load then when maybe 5 to 10 % capacity is drained the controllers snap back on and cover the charge and drain loads. Ridiculous micro charging and TOTALLY wasteful. I have now added SCRs remotely controlled by wireless Arduino devices to redirect some panel capacity to a 72 to 12 volt step down regulator that drives a 12 volt inverter that hooks to a UPS to buffer clouds. Technology is great ! Thanks for your suggestion !

No problem at all to this day I still use all the extra power to power things instead of just letting it go to nothing. Sounds like you are enjoying the extra power now Awesome.

I wish midnite made 150, 200, and 250 AMP charge controllers! The 96amp capacity of the 150 is great, but I have an offgrid array of pv, that us requiring 6, 60 amp charge controllers, even if I went with a classic 150 I'd need atleast 3 of them, a charge controller that has output modules would be awesome, the controller with 60 amps or so output, 150v in, then extra modules to allow a additional 60 amps output, then another, the modules being a fraction of the cost of the controller it's self, that would be awesome, if it only allowed 4 modules, that's 240 amps, at say 72 volts max output, to charge 60v systems, I think a voltage sense leads would be a must, and a current sense of each module, to allow mppt, the main controller would handle all logic, the modules would be basically buck converters, controlled by the main charge controller. To me that would be worth the near $800-900 of a classic, the price is all over the place, I see them for $650 or so, I even seen them for $729, $799, even $599 for a regular classic150, and the SL for about $50 less, I don't know if midnite sells directly, but that would be nice also!!

Do the cheaper MPPT controllers have this feature? I see "load" on some of them, but I don't know if they have programmable settings as to when that is switched on or off. Some of them probably don't do anything at all.

If I understand this you have it set to trip a relay to draw directly from the battery bank if the voltage hits 60 volts? Are you drawing directly from the battery bank DC or the output side of the inverter 120cv a/c?

You don't have a copy of ur wire diagram for a 24v system do you I can't find one like you got it didn't come with my fw 500 thanks
@ModernOffGridDIY
@ModernOffGridDIY 6 лет назад
It's the same 12v 24v 48v all the same because the output on the ac side is Either 120v or 220v coming out so the manual shows to wire the ac side, so I'm not sure are you asking how to wire the dc side ?
@dangoras9152
@dangoras9152 6 лет назад
Yeah the wire diagram u had on the wall where can I get one for 120v and I need one for the dc side too the instructions they sent with it is only how to mount it to the mount plate i got a lot of hardware for the dc side I'm looking for a little help outback sent different wire diagram thanks

Those wire on the aux, it's so thin. Does it get hot? I'm doing the exact same setup as you and I'm trying to figure how to get bigger wire in those aux connection.

I'm using Lead acid batteries... And I'm in Canada. Setting the on and off voltages is fine, but what about when it gets cold? Is there any way to program SOC into the controller? I'm a little disappointed considering the price tag of this thing if there is no SOC programmed in.
@kenputer56

You can set the controller to dump when the batteries get to float

I think he's using 120V for the heating element. So to do that he would have to change the element to one suitable for 12V, and also run an extra length of heavier gauge wire all the way to the water heater. By using a SSR, he only has to run a very light gauge wire to the heater, and can use the heating element already in the water heater.
@0786RICARDO
@0786RICARDO 4 года назад
Can't you simply set the equipment you already have and set a charge voltage and a sell voltage ranges? Instead of doing all of that? They usually come with that option. I mean, this video is super interesting, I'd just like to know.

So with that sat do you connect it directly to the heating element, and does the heating element need to be 12v

Dylan Looks like you're right across the highway from me I'm up in orchidland looking into dumping 5000w into a hot water heater when the batteries are full. But I don't want all the power going through my charge controller and inverter. I want to pull it from the panels before it goes to the charge controller and send it through a homemade mppt element controller with an AC like output that would be more ideal for the free hot water heaters laying around the island
