3 years late but this is the best hack to real pattern fit! im 66 and too tired to do all that blocking etc I learned. Never did full fasionschool but small series offered at adult ed. Ive made plenty of circle skirts, attachd my old skirts to tshirts but this gives me a way to do a great basic bodice to add material too. The town we retired to has cleaned out their grandmas sewing stash and given to me! Im assume that fold at underarm still gives the bust fit with elastic in a magic way. I can see also trying different lengths on bodice for diffgernet looks. At waist etc. this could have a retangle faux sleeve added too. Or little bolero made from a tshirt. im checking out your other videos!
The paper tip is one of the best ever sewing tips. I purchased a new sewing machine about 2 years ago and thought it was defective because my fabric would get caught. Then I happened to be watching one of your older sew-alongs when you mentioned it. I was so relieved.
I am just seeing this! 😱 YOU MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS UP CLOSE IN A CLASSROOM! Your tutorial was soooo clear and understanding!!!!! And the dress is absolutely AMAZING!!! Thank you
Mimi, please please take more time to show yourself in your creations! You showed yourself in your finished dress for 3 seconds (I counted) Would LOVE to see a longer part of your video in your creations at the end (or even the beginning) Thank you for your fun videos!
Loved this Mimi thank you. I made it today and your instructions were nice and easy. I just made the square bigger as I wanted it slightly longer and it worked a treat. Will be making another as I love the simplicity of the dress. You are such a good teacher x
Simply stunning! Unless I have missed a video on any 'white me-makes' perhaps this could be the next color wardrobe to share with us. I adore making white garments. Something simple like this can get me out of a bind when it comes to dressing for a summer wedding or other gala. Thanks!
Beautiful dress. Excellent instruction. Very easy to follow for this beginner. I agree with another comment that the end was a bit abrupt. I too would have liked to see the hem finished.
Love the video and the paper in the beginning is very useful I tend to have problems with my fabric being torn and I love the way you give step by step instructions on how to create the beautiful dress.
OMG!!! You make this look so easy. You are so talented. Thank you for always sharing, stay blessed. Oh I made the tee shirt dress and it was so easy after watching your tutorials, turned out so cute! Thanks again 😊
Have had a number of skirts and pants with elastic in them like this and the elastic always twists in the wash. On most of those, I undo the waist seam and then stitch down one side of the elastic to the inside of the skirt or pants waistband then resew the seam I took out. To do that on this dress you would go ahead and iron as instructed, then open the fold and pin the elastic in place (please note that the elastic should be joined end to end FIRST), then stitch along the bottom edge of the elastic through the fabric that will be on the INSIDE of the dress when finished. Then fold and sew that seam to enclose the elastic. Do NOT stitch both sides of the elastic down as it will pucker oddly. Doing this secures the elastic better and prevents rolling for a much more professional look. Good tutorial and nice pattern though I can't do strapless. Using the entire tee for a pattern and then adding lace sleeves would make for an awesome evening dress for those of us who are larger or simply uncomfortable strapless. Of course you would eliminate the elastic if doing this. You should use a sleeved tee for your pattern and stretch lace for the sleeves as fabric for pattern and the dress are stretch knit. Necklines are fun to play with here too. I would go for a flattering scoop neck coming straight down from sides of your neck. I just need to go get some stretch lace!
Thanks Mimi for this tutorial. I'm a beginner and I've watched all your videos. You've given me so much confidence because you make it look so easy. Can't wait to make this.
Me to, being 4yrs later after your comment 😜… your not so much of a beginner I bet. I’ve only been sewing almost 2yrs. So I’m still learning. This however makes me want to make this. I have been wanting to make a halter dress and all other tutorials make it seem hard. This one omg so excited to try!
I LOVE your vlog tutorials everything. I would love to see the finished product one more time at the end of your tutorials-cuz I get so involved sewing and following along to see the item again wb terrific... thank you for all
I would have liked to see you stitch the hem and then hold up the dress for a better look. The end of the tutorial came across as abrupt! Apart from that, you clearly gave precise instructions and the dress was very nicely sewn!
The white dress is very cute but I clicked to see your haircut tbh. Lol. It’s super cute! I love pixie cuts and this really suits your face shape so well. You go sis🥰
I love how you do your tutorials you make every thing plain and easy thank you so much I subscribed to you so time ago but this is the first time I've seen you do one in quite some time
Thanks for the tutorial! Quick tip for clarification though: saying “divide by half” mathematically means divide by 0.5 which will actually double the number making 15/0.5=30. Just wanted to point that out in case it messes some people up! Thanks again for your videos
OMAGOSH! Your pinkies are just like mine! We must be related somehow. My sister and I call it “the inheritance” because all of our children have the pinkies too except not as short as we do.
Thanks for your awesome sewing lesson. On the square the 22" square is that for a size small, medium, lg, and extra leg? Or do you make the sq smaller for a smaller size? You are super awesome. Thanks!
Hi MiMi! This is a quick and easy one. Question...could we use a stretch stitch, as well as, a short zigzag stitch? Or is this strictly a zigzag stitch item?
Omg I’m so excited to make this! Thanks so much for this tutorial! You are sooo creative and talented! Your directions are clear, I mean this is going to be quick and painless! Can’t wait, I think I’m going to do this tomorrow. Tysm xoxoxoxo
Are those ring weights that you use to hold pattern down, something you get from a sewing store or is that a hardware item you get from Home depot? That a pretty neat idea, because I hated all the pinning required in doing patterns. I love how the dress looked on you but how about a circular skirt? Is that doable or too much material? Thanks for sharing and blessing to you in the days to come.
How tall are you mimi G??? How did you come up with 20" measurements??? I want to make sure I am not doing trial and error measurements for the skirt part.
Oooh this was 2 years ago u posted but I tried these measurements and couldn’t get into it lol. It’s now my mannequin....I let her have it☺️. I’m reviewing the tutorial again and now I’m thinking about cutting half of own waist measurement..::🤷🏾♀️
I tried it. Sewing the bodice to the skirt is where I screwed up😶 UPDATE! I took it apart very carefully and got it all pinned again and ready to sew. Once I get the elastic in, I will let you know!!
Hi Mrs.G I am 5feet tall short torso and I have a bit of t tummy . I fine it hard to fine clothes that look good on my especially dresses, skirts, and blouses. I am 66years young can you please give me some ideas I always look sloppy to me. Thank you dear.
Awww I love her freakles. Thanks for the tutorial. Oh my and did you see her pinky fingers? So cute. Im sorry Mimi, I'm a self-described eccentric who love anything out of the boring norm. oweei
I have the same curved pinky fingers that I was born with. I heard some great great relative of mine had the same fingers but I have never seen anyone else that has them
For the love of God woman why do none of your tutorials have any video footage of you wearing the clothes??? You cab tell so much more about a dress if you cab see it move!!
