Step by step instruction starts at 21:35
For this tutorial you will need: a finished ornament to embellish
A non permanent marking tool - I used a chalk pencil, I recommend the Bohin pencils
A small ruler
Inexpensive scissors
Fine needles: I recommend a #10 milliner's (soft edge finish, like a pillow) or curved beading needle (hard edge finish, as seen here)
Crystals or beads of your choice, I used 4mm crystal rounds
Silk wrapped purl in the size and color of your choice
Update 12/19: Finishing packs are currently sold out, although individual boxes of size 4 purl are still available. They will be returning for Christmas in July 2024, so I have left the information about the packs up in the description. A new color has been commissioned for holiday 2024 as well.
Finishing kits are available at katie-strachan...
The finishing packs have one box of silk wrapped purl (size super), the recommended needles, 4mm crystal rounds and a spool of 100/3 silk that match the purl
As used in this tutorial, the pack will make 20 1/4" edging, although formulas to calculate length needed for the different variations are listed below.
All ornaments shown in this tutorial are individual motifs from the Modern Folk Embroidery pattern Through the Bitter Frost & Snow: www.modernfolk...
Silk wrapped purl comes in size super (smallest), 2, and 4 (largest)
One box of super contains an 18 inch length, sizes 2 and 4 come in 1 yard lengths
You can find the purl variation trims shown - silk scallop, laid down trim, and metal lined laid down trim here, as well as regular silk wrapped purl: thistle-thread...
Needle in a Haystack has photographed many of the silk wrapped purls and has them listed here: www.needlestack...
The Knotted Needle and Traditional Stitches also carry silk wrapped purl, although any LNS can special order it for you
I recommend Artbeads as a source for crystal beads:
artbeads.com/p...
As well as crystal pearls:
artbeads.com/p...
Formulas for the different finishes:
The single loop finish demonstrated in this tutorial uses a 1/2" cut of size super purl, stitched down on a 1/4" length, with 5/16" between loops
To add a double scallop as seen in the lighter green, round ornament, add 7/8" cut lengths of size 4 purl, staggering them behind your front loops as demonstrated in the tutorial
For the double scallop on the small square ornament, the front rows were 1/2" cuts of size super pearl, stitched down on a 1/4" loop length, but spaced 1/4" apart. The second, back row of scallops were 5/8" cuts, staggered behind the front row
For the single scallop seen on the red square ornament: 1/2" cut length of super purl, stitched down on a 5/16" loop length, with 1/8" between scallops where I have placed a single 3mm round crystal
The double scallop with metal purls (on the blue ornament stitched in White Gold Glint Bijoux) used a 3/8" length of smooth purl stitched down over a 1/4" loop length, with 1/4" between loops. The second row of scallops used a 5/8" cut of check purl, staggered behind the front loops
To calculate how much silk wrapped purl you need:
Measure the finished edge of your piece - ornament, pillow, etc - to know what your total vertical length is
Choose your purl - remember, super comes in a 18" length while sizes 2 and 4 come in 1 yard lengths
Add together one stitched length and one space: for the single loop finish shown, that came to .5625 with 1/4" taken up by one loop, and 5/16" between loops
I was using 1/2" cuts of purl, so every 1/2" inch of purl equals .5626 inches of a finished edge
1/2" cuts for a 18" length means I can get 36 cuts out of one box of super purl, so I would also need 36 beads if using the full length of purl
Crystal pairings for Katie's Greens
For the blue toned greens (as shown on the double scallop round ornament), I recommend crystal color Erinite, as used on the double scallop ornament, or for a lighter crystal that matches the color more exactly, Chrysolite or Chrysolite Opal
For the yellow toned greens, crystal color Palace Green Opal

These tutorials make all the difference. The previously impossible for me, or at least that’s the way it was perceived, becomes totally possible because of your carefully constructed and perfectly presented lesson plans. You wear your teacher hat extraordinarily well. Thank you, thank you, Katie!! There’s lots here for the taking beyond techniques too. I especially appreciate the guidance as to silk wrapped purl versus the metal variety, which will avoid many a beginner’s blunder. The finished pieces shown also address aesthetics and I found that equally important. This applies not just to the obvious with the synthetic purl as opposed to the Gilt Bright Check Purl, but how the curves and flow of the loop method lend so beautifully to round ornaments, yet can equally enhance square or diamond shapes. The example that particularly appeals is the longer lengths and gentler contours with the beads between rather than looping over a bead. Oh, the ‘purls’ of wisdom you generously share are coming across so clear!

Thank you so much for your kind words! I did my best but really, silk wrapped purl is very simple to use as it truly is cut and stitch, that's the particular magic of the thread. I only scratched the surface on all the design and finishing possibilities, I'm sure there are many more spectacular variations out there waiting to be discovered!

It will be coming back into stock soon, I hope within the next couple of weeks. Materials are all on order already. I did begin my embroidery journey with Tricia and Cabinet of Curiosities, but from there it's just a matter of taking what she teaches you and figuring out what else you can do with the techniques and materials. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy every one of your videos. I am so grateful for all you teach us! I have a question for you. I haven't been able to find curved beading needles. I'm only finding the long hooked ones or curved upholstery needles. Can you tell me where you get them? Thanks so much for all you give to this community!
@katiestrachanembroidery
@katiestrachanembroidery 10 месяцев назад
Thank you! Needle in a Haystack stocks them: www.needlestack.com/WebStore/Accessories/Needles.html The first section is beading needles, and if you scroll down to the bottom of the section you should see John James #10 curved beading needles. They come in packs of 2 but honestly I'd recommend buying a few packs while you're at it, they're so useful to have and can make finishing so much easier. Truly a game changer if you're working with a hard edge like the ornaments seen here.

I just discovered your RU-vid channel and I love this silk wrapped purl edging! Will you be restocking your kits? I would love to buy a kit! I am also interested in your beaded basket, but I can't seem to find a video of it, other than a brief view of it on another casket video. Could you direct me? Thank you! Karen
@katiestrachanembroidery
@katiestrachanembroidery 4 месяца назад
Thank you! I will, although not anytime soon. The beaded basket definitely appeared on a flosstube but I couldn't say which one - it would have been maybe a year ago? Year and a half? It's amazing how quickly they all run together, but it was definitely featured in one of my regular flosstubes, I did a full segment on it once it was back from exhibition. You could look through episode descriptions as I probably put some of the technical details on number of pieces in it, etc.

If you marked out spacing on a round of cardboard, laid your finished ornament in the middle and marked prior to stitching would that work? I would surely miss mark. 😮. Starting 12 o’clock and next 6 o’clock etc.
@katiestrachanembroidery
@katiestrachanembroidery 10 месяцев назад
I think so, but you would want to go in order all the way around rather than marking top/bottom first - it's easy to get thrown off and you want to keep the spacing as consistent as possible. Having said that - it's pretty forgiving and I wouldn't stress about it. My own spacing is not exact on any of the six ornaments shown, and the finishes are still lovely.

Thank you for the exceptional tutorial. Simply holding items under the lens without a good contrast background is not effective. Many of your examples are completely lost to the viewer. Your knowledge and skill are amazing.
