I have Analog Lab and the V-Collection 7 with the new OB-Xa, but the MicroFreak _still_ interests me, especially with its affordable price tag. Since I'm now doing everything on my computer, I was hoping that the MicroFreak had its own Arturia software program (like the Spark drum machine had), but it's still nice that it uses an Arturia Software Center -based hub to make adjustments. I'd like to see a more in-depth video of what you can do with that. Anyways, I love you guys' software; it's awesome!
This electronic has overcome the future need to anxiously see whats being fabricated by other consumer instrument companies, having heard little mention of @mutableinstruments since building their flagships in the early re-interest in modular, I saw the collaboration, had built many instruments using the resistance keybed and wondered why it took 5 years to hear of its release, instant buy. I bought a MS-20 mini for education in teaching art and life through waves, but it is useless without the midi output of the microfreak, and Ide certainly buy 2 more of them instead of the korg, for lending to students in hindsight. MERCI BEAUCOUP ARTURIA J'TAIME OXO
I don't know how can he say "it is easy to set up", I have done so much research online and have owned the microfreak for over a year and still cannot get Microfreak to sync up the arpeggiator downbeat with Logic Pro X's Midi Clock, and because of that I can never record anything from the Microfreak. Can someone from @Arturia clarify how to do this??
Hi i have a connectivity issue with my MF, i want to connect it using a hardware synth with the original midi connections using ordinary old midi cables but although i have done so the freak does not respond, what are the settings i need to do inside the MF in order to make this connection work ? Btw this little beast has a lot of synth power !
I did it for the first time, earlier. The 3.5mm MIDI sockets were quite stiff so I think my initial problems may have been due to not plugging in the adapters fully - maybe plug them in and remove them a few times. Unplugging took some effort, so turn and gently wiggle them a bit as you unplug. For the MicroFreak to receive MIDI, all you should have to do is set the MIDI channel to match what's being sent, or set it to ALL, and make sure Merge is set to include MIDI or "BOTH" - which means 3.5mm and USB, I think. Use the Utilities menu button, near rear right, to get into or leave the menu, then use the white encoder, clicking to go up or down a level. You can set some options for THRU too. You might need to turn that off to avoid a MIDI loop, depending on how you have it connected and to what.
I LOVE this synth... my only gripe is that I could have done without one or two of the more similar synth models and instead gotten a rudimentary reverb and delay... just the open source mutable instruments reverb would be fine... how hard could that be... now i HAVE TO plug it through stuff, which, for its main purpose as a teeny tiny portable synth, is annoying... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, pwetty please, with a cherry on top.. reverb and delay please!
I have two questions: 1. are the midi connections type a or type b? 2. will a midi signal that is sent to the microfreak via USB be transmitted to the midi out of the microfreak? I am thinking of the midi through function possibilities.
hi there, thanks for the video What sort of cable would i need if i would like to pair my Tracker to a microfreak using their Midi "Jack" in/out ? I hope i made myself understood, i'm quite a big noob into this world :D Cheers
The midi thru doesn't seem to actually echo midi that is input, I've tried both through CV output and with the correct channel configuration (input 1 output 1 for example).
I can’t get the midi thru to work either (I haven’t tried the cv out though as I don’t have modular). I’ve tried everything and just can’t get it to work. The closest I got was playing my midi controller (keystep pro) into the Microfreak with its arp on. When I do that , the arp transmits its midi data to the synth on the output/thru. But as soon as I turn the arp off, the signal doesn’t get mirrored like they say. This is disappointing because that midi thru was important for a setup I’m using. I suppose I’ll have to get another Quadra-thru for this, but I didn’t want to. I hope arturia can fix this in an update. It’s technically false advertising if it says there’s midi they when there’s clearly not.
3 years since this video came out and syncing arpeggiator with Logic Pro X still is an issue… the tempo syncs, but the arpeggiator always starts not on the beat and stay off the beat consistently 🤦🏻♂️
Hey! Thanks for this information, I am very much a beginner when it comes to Synths, I have tried to connect Microfreak to sync with Garageband but I can not make it work the way I want and it would be great to able to play all the sounds from MF and synch with the tempo in Garageband, or do I need to get LogicPro? I only manage to get the sound in and not all the midi information so that I can change the notes and sync with the tempo in my DAW. I love the Microfreak though, it has sparked my creativity but I can do sooo much more with it and it's frustrating that I do not understand how.
I'd like to see a MedusaFreak combo of the Polyend grid attached to the Microfreak synth. Imagine being able to have different matrix/knob/oscillator settings per pad of the Polyend controller that you can play or sequence. Plus the mpe control over the Microfreak.
Can you tell me how to use my Moog werkstatt with the micro freak so I can use the micro freak keyboard and arp etc? I can’t seem to get it to work thanks so much
It does and can also change synth engines via CC which allows for super smooth parameter locking via external sequencers. It greatly increases the speed at which it can shift between vastly different sounds. Sometimes I make drum kit sequences just to show my buddies it can be done 👍🏽

The Output volume is incredibly low compared to the Drumbrute impact. Is that normal and do I have to insert a miniamp then before my focusrite? What can I do? 😭
If I remember well you can change the volume of each preset in the utility section. I suggest you to get in touch with our support team with this link: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp I’m sure they will be able to help you :) Best regards.
Can you use the USB MIDI port on the MF to plug an external midi keyboard with a real keybed to control the MF or do you have to use those silly breakout plugs then plug 5 pin din midi cables into them and into a keyboard? I hate the breakout midi cables
@@woodswalker88 as far as I know yes. I'm not with mine currently to test it out though. The battery may well work though but I've so far only used mine with the power supply.
@@mrcassette of course you can play with an external midi keyboard, but can you use that keyboard's aftertouch to control the pressure on the mod matrix?
I guess the cable on the left is a usb cable to the laptop. Where does the cable on the right go, from the microfreak to where? Thanks. Nice tutorials.
Hi @@PeterKudelin! If you have an external sound card, you can just plug your audio cable into the sound card, and choose this sound card as the Audacity's audio in :)
Hi there, it is already in stock in many music stores in the world! Make sure to contact them to know if they have it already: www.arturia.com/community/dealer-locator
@@ArturiaOfficial thank you. I've checked that the other day. I live in Maui, Hawaii. I usually go through zzounds for gear. I've also checked Sweetwater. Both places are preorders still.
I just got my MF today...I have been trying to tempo-sync it to a Synthstrom Deluge which is the master clock. It is not working. When connected via a MIDI cable to the Deluge, the arps and sequences in the MF either don't sync, or they don't play at all. I have gone into the Utilities and tried all the settings...still nothing. Bummer!
If you read the Arturia forum there are a lot of problems with the program MCC still doesnt recognice the device when my fl studio does. Even there are not sync and I cannot update the program.
We all have to start somewhere, but just about every question here was basic stuff you should really know if you plan on getting the most our of the microfreak, beyond just tweaking cutoff and res.
Perhaps linking an article or video that teaches some of that "basic stuff" would be more helpful then just telling people they should already know it.
how can I connect the microfreak via midi to my RC505 Loopstation without have the play button on the RC505 cause the sequencer on the microfreak to start???
Excellent connectivity with modular gear, but it’s rather a shame that so many of the control options require several thousands of pounds’ worth of pc to function. How about making the Control Centre available over iOS too?
Is the USB Midi class compliant? I can't get my Microfreak to send Midi Data to my HERMOD Eurorack module. It only works via the Midi cable. All my other devices besides the Elektron Digitakt can do it (the Digitakt seems to have some kind of fast USB protocol which the Hermod doesn't support ... does the Microfreak also use that protocol?)
I'm lost in the conversation. I haven't been able to get my opz to send note data. I have some kinda software that lets me reassign the midi programming of the Microfreak, but I don't know what it is or where it's at on my Mac. My secondary mac user has guaps of shit, it'll even run windows. But computers get me lost
Question how to use an external keyboard to play the micro freak. I wonder can I set up something else to control it like the roli seaboard rise which is MPE? If so how best to approach this
Microfreak manual p.30 Input MIDI Channel - All,1-16,none. MicroFreak sends and receives on one of the 16-channel MIDI port. It should respond to midi pressure.

How would I record the raw sound coming out from it? I don't want to record using a mic because, well, that's losing some sound, you know? How do I just get it as a sample or something?
Hi, I suggest you to get in touch with our support team with this link: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp I’m sure they will be able to help you :) Best regards.
@Arturia I understand that the USB cable will only send MIDI notes (and not audio) produced by the MicroFreak into a DAW, correct? If so, what's the easiest way to send the audio as well, along with the MIDI notes? Thank you!
@@robsinHL the reason I was asking this is that with VSTs I don't usually record audio, I mean I just record the midi track and then when playing it back the audio is generated again in real time by the VST according to the VST preset. Is this kind of setup not possible with an hardware synth like MicroFreak and some DAW tweaking?
@@aaalllfff you can send midi signal to the synth! and it will the midi notes you want and you can control that sound real time .... but all the automations and movement you have to eventually record in your daw, so that you can free up the synth to play other instruments.
@@darshanvyas4881 no you don't get me, I want to send midi notes to the daw while also recording the audio emitted by the synth as I play those notes...
To be honest I don't know, I suggest you to get in touch with our support team with this link: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp I’m sure they will be able to help you :)
I'd be surprised if there is, if I understand the question correctly. There's no stereo output, so if you plug in a stereo cable, you're getting an identical mono image on the L and R channels.
You can send something like PC (program change), and probably CC (control change). But not MIDI notes. In other words Pod XD does not send the notes you’re playing. Fastest way to make your MicroFreak a guitar-synth destination is the free MidiGuitar software. This uses any audio interface, and REGULAR guitar signal, from the ¼” output/regular pickup. You could also use any other midi guitar technology (Roland GK/GR etc)
Hi! I also want to connect it to my rc505. But the audio output of Microfreak is balanced, but rc505's instrument input is unbalanced, which caused a lot of noise! Have you figured out how to properly connect them?
@@masterj2245 I connect them with the help of a mixer. Freak at one channel(TURNING UP FX from the channel) and from Fx send of the mixer to the 505 input. Output of 505 to a stereo channel at mixer(important that this channel has fx fader DOWN). Midi connection is another subject though..they say use 505 as a master but i have my MC101 as a master and 505 as slave. Then goes to freak etc...still havent fully undersood that subject :)) Hope it helps!!
Shit out of luck for anything meaningful. You need the software to reveal/ assign cc messages. Stock options make no goddamn sense, it's like eating pickled icecream with a fork and having marbles for sprinkles.
hey guys! new producer here! I got gifted this synth for Christmas and im so excited and love getting to know more about it. but I'm literally confused. I wanted to use the synth to make beats on Logic Pro x, but I've been studying for hours and can't find anything. the sound is weird whenever I connect it and I ended up getting gifted an interface as well but it looks like I dont need it??? feel free to message me lol
ok I read through the comments a bit and see you can use an interface. I have the focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and am wondering what cables I need to operate it, because I see the cables that come with the MF isn't built to connect to it.
Easy to set up. bullshit. I just plug my korg stuff together and it works. The options are nice, but it add complexity to the sync up. I might have to return mine for this reason. Bummer
Hi! The white "Rate/swing" knob is both for time division and tempo, you can click on it to change its mode. In step sequencer mode you can also press shift and turn this knob to change the number of steps. I hope it helps. Best regards.
New firmware was released today which is supposed to address a bunch of issues. I'm still waiting on my preorder, but am very much looking forward to trying this synth.
Yea, I've seen that, someone just messaged me on Insta saying the update failed on their MF, I had issues when I had mine trying to put the then current one on, [thinking it would help with the issues] but it failed at every attempt.
Hi there, We released a firmware update that should be fixing any issues you've encountered. If not, I recommend you to contact our support team: www.arturia.com/support/askforhelp
I got a microfreak for my birthday half a year ago and i'm still wondering/looking how i can clock my drumbrute to my microfreak and you just had to plug it in like that?? tried it a million times and it still didn't work. what are the settings to make them connect with eachother? because i'm starting to feel frustrated that i don't get the full potential out of it and it even demotivates me to start playing on it.... @arturia pleaaaaaase help :)
