Palele Faataape was 3 when she arrived in New Zealand from Tuvalu. She was adopted to an uncle and was raised believing she was Samoan. She's spent her whole life in Canterbury and has never been back to Tuvalu. It's left a hole in her heart that has never been filled. This week she met Tuvalu kaiga (family) in Christchurch as part of Tuvalu Language Week celebrations.

Most Tuvaluans can really speak in Samoan fluently. By the way, I’m a Samoan. Love for our Tuvaluan brothers and sisters n may God bless u all in Jesus Name.

It's our linguistics similarities. Samoa, Tonga, and Tokelau we share some linguistics similarities like Kioa in Fiji the people are actually Tuvaluans. The plaangis been classifying us as this and that. However, we are all one big family of the blue continent.....

@@km2441 They’re not just any Tuvaluans, they’re from the island of Vaitupu in Tuvalu.

Awesome story! In Hawai'i, we Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiians), depending on how long we live, we keep in close contact with our 1st-4th cousins. We also keep in contact with our grandparents siblings children and grandchildren, we dont consider how related a person is to another unless they're siblings. But usually your 1st cousins are like your siblings. Love to see how us Polynesians have so much cultural similarities ontop of linguistic similarities💙🤙🏽

Tuvaluan history and folklore say that the 8 islands have mixed blood of Tongan and Samoan, the north 4 islands mostly Tongan descent and south 4 are mostly Samoan descent

If you understand both Tongan and Samoan, you can for the most part understand the Tuvaluan language.

Crazy how the Tongans and the Samoans has travel to these little Islands and many more during the past influencing their language. Maybe that's why we're Polynesians. Pacific Vikings conquering each other lol. Congrats on meeting your lost family

Tuvalu 🇹🇻 sounds a lot like Te reo Māori 🇳🇿 Sāmoan 🇼🇸 and hint of Tongan 🇹🇴. This is the first time I’ve ever heard that language and it’s beautiful.

Hard to tell because Tuvalu has 8 different dialects and one island in Tuvalu (Nui) speak Kiribati but with their own dialect too.
