In a world where streaming and the digital landscape is growing bigger and bigger, TRADITIONAL TV IS DYING - At least that's what a new article from the BBC seems to claim...
But why now? What has changed to solidly put traditional TV in the gutter? Is there any hope of saving it in the near future?

The irony is I subscribe to numerous streaming services that constantly increase in price only to discover what I want to watch is on a service I don't subscribe to and when it is, it's taken off before I complete the series meaning effectively, I need to stay in and watch a series about to be removed. I'm giving in and returning to Blu-ray and DVD.

This is just a transition. The situation where studios have their own service and only show their own stuff is never going to survive. Netflix exploded because everything was on netflix. And streaming will only stagnate until they adopt a model like music streamers have adopted. A third party streamer like netflix or someone else, or maybe a couple big ones that compete, that studios licence to and recieve a royalty based on viewer numbers or something of that sort. Until that happens streaming will not be able to take over.

If Traditional TV does become obsolete... (Don't ask me when I think it'll happen)... I'd like to see the following... - Ident Galleries (I know this is extremely niche, but the BBC have done something like that on their website, so a man can dream.) - Live Premieres (I imagine this would get people excited for an upcoming show or episode of a show. Also, the fate of Live TV shows is a mystery to me with the rise of streaming.)

Honestly I wish the channels stopped blaming 'viewing habits' and just focused on their content .. for the BBC alone they haven't really spiced up their programming since the early 2000s... (And ITV)... Its always ... News, morning programmes (not changed in ages), quiz shows, sports, kids shows, news, soaps or dramas, adult drama, news, random adult stuff they don't know where to put it... Repeated. Just look at what people are watching on streaming and at what times and copy it... Then people would care. I try to watch as much normal TV as possible... But I'll watch 2 shows then be like... Nope...we are now on that section on the day 🤦. Just make BBC nation friendly... Itv family friendly and channel 4 the adult one.... Bam.... You have variety!!

There are also people out there who ONLY watch Linear TV because they can't wrap their heads around the concept of streaming services, which is understandable. Unfortunately, people like them will be left out when broadcast television comes to a halt. I can imagine a situation in the future where families (who wouldn't be comfortable having their child be entirely in control of what content the kids watch), wish linear TV stayed with us for longer. Of course, there are those of us who'll get along with Internet-exclusive TV.

I know TV is dying worldwide and this is a very UK centric view of things but I think charging pensioners is for the TV licence is proving to be a big mistake when it comes to viewing numbers because many pensioners cannot afford the TV licence and many of them have been forced to turn to streaming services and on demand services and RU-vid for entertainment because for those pensioners it was easier to become technologically savvy enough to use these services. Then it was to find the money to pay for the TV licence and since they were the main viewers The viewing numbers are going down because less of them are legally able to watch TV now. I think the scrapping of many children's channels is going to prove to be a mistake as well especially with parents now being more internet conscious then they were when I was growing up because many parents are now deciding they don't want their kids on the internet at all and in that case they would rather their children watch pre-approved programs on a dedicated children's channel then going on a streaming service on top of doing goodness knows what online so while in theory scrapping children's channels seems like a logical cost cutting decision they might end up just shooting themselves in the foot and losing even more viewing numbers that they would have gotten from children.

I don't think traditional TV will be 100% Obsolete, if services like Sling TV, RU-vid TV, and FuboTV are anything to go by, but it does seem like the Internet will be more involved, weither we like it or not. I still think there's a market for traditional antenna (or, I guess Freeview in the UK's case), but like cable and satellite before it, the big money will go to streaming. Personally, I'm fine with it as long as there's still a free service, and they get rid of paying to watch ads.

"I still think there's a market for traditional antenna (or, I guess Freeview in the UK's case), but like cable and satellite before it, the big money will go to streaming." In the UK, Sky has ran Now TV for years (which is basically Sky over IPTV instead of satellite) and they've released Sky Glass (Sky's own TV which again provides TV over IPTV rather than satellite) so our biggest provider of satellite TV seems to be migrating to IPTV and Freesat will liekly be going with it. Same goes for Freeview. The government is hiving off more and more of the UHF TV band that was used for analogue TV and is now being used for Freeview for mobile phones, there are already channels that need a "connected TV" in order to watch them and Freeview and Freesat have also merged into one company. Traditional TV will be entirely over the internet on the same platform as streaming services, I'm just hoping we get one app for all free to air (or free to stream) channels, with the TV Licence being replaced by a levy on internet charges, per connection rather than per household but cheaper per connection than the TV licence.

@@GeoNeilUKFreeview will eventually in all probability be reduced to just the mainstream news channels, QVC sales channels, American tat channels like the Food Channel, Quest and Blaze and maybe Drama for the oldies that are still left. Everything else is pretty much gone as it is. E4 will eventually shut up shop as they realise that it isn't a 'yoof' channel anymore just as they closed 4 Music and Viva years ago. Forces TV was a fantastic channel until they closed last summer because of the frequency sell off. That's TV seems to be powering on in the meantime but will probably be bought over or edged out also given enough time.

All of which can be delivered via IPTV. Freeview and Freesat are already under the auspices of one company, Everyone TV which will very likely reveal itself as the streaming app that replaces both services and would really be nothing more than TV moving from terrstrial and satellite to IPTV. The channels that require a "connected" television are already provided through IPTV (and diappointingly don't work on my equally connected BT TV box) "Everything else is pretty much gone as it is. E4 will eventually shut up shop as they realise that it isn't a 'yoof' channel anymore just as they closed 4 Music and Viva years ago." Last I checked 4Music is still going via IPTV. "That's TV seems to be powering on in the meantime but will probably be bought over or edged out also given enough time." That's TV will carry on as long as it has an audience (or as long as companies are prepared to advertise on it) if it was going to be bought out, it would have happened by now.

Linear tv is just not going to survive i think. But streaming as it exists today is also impossible to stay as it is now. What it most likely will turn into is something like the model music streaming have adopted. A third party service provider where these production companies licence their content to. So that everything can come back to a single service again instead of this segmented idea where everybody does their own service. A bit like what netflix started out as. Bbc and the likes can offer their productions on these third party services as well.

I don't so much see the decline in watching TV in the traditional, linear manner as being the death of TV as such. It's more of a shifting pattern, as technologies evolve and converge. Early adopters of home VHS weren't abandoning TV if they taped an episode of Coronation Street to watch at a later time, in fact they were increasing the overall viewership by being able to watch a show which they would otherwise have had to miss due to other engagements. I don't think that the decline in live viewership marks the end of linear television, I think it's just becoming a lesser preferred option in some areas. But not one which will ultimately be entirely abandoned. Its role is merely evolving, with its importance still healthy for shared experiences of big, live events. It just doesn't make any sense that someone would now rush home to watch an episode of a TV show at a specific time, when it's available to watch whenever they want. It would be like leaving a party early just to catch the last bus home, when you have a personal driver sitting in a car outside who will gladly drive you anywhere at any time. Shared viewing experiences will always have a place, it's preferable to watch a big football match live and not be missing out on the latest development. But on demand streaming is just another way to view the same content as you would if live was the only method, just with a greater level of convenience and choice. Traditional TV is not dying, it's just adapting with the evolving landscape.

I think older people are more motivated to learn about streaming services because the current trend in daytime advertising seeming to be funeral services and life insurance plans! If I was an older person, I wouldn't want to see two minutes you're going to die soon 4 times an hour, every hour! A car manufacturer could get a lot of attention and probably kill off that trend by getting Jeremy Clarkson to produce an advert for a very expensive sports car in the style of those adverts with a very Jeremy Clarkson twist ("Remember, it's not their inheritence, it's your money! I thought it had more to do with the fact that they started charging pensioners for the TV licence and since many pensioners cannot afford the TV licence It has literally been easier for them to become technologically savvy and just use sites like RU-vid or the on demand services or maybe pay a lower amount for a Netflix or Now TV or Amazon Prime subscription than it has been to find the money to pay for the TV licence. The BBC literally priced out their main viewers and screwed over every other channel that relies on views and advertisements as a result.

For example, Newsnight, is down to under 200,000 viewers (from around 1m peak) & Radio 4’s Today Programme has 800,000 listeners (from 7.5m peak). That's because cable TV isn't as common in Bongistan. In Burgerstan young people are so used to having cable TV that they think antennas are an amazing free TV channel life hack. In Europe in general, pay TV is much cheaper and the free channels actually have plenty of content worth watching. In some places, multiple streaming services end up costing as much as the whole internet plan. It's better to just have the usual IPTV, terrestrial TV and free satellite TV, alongside the internet connection.

Networks don’t help themselves by showing the first episode on linear tv then proudly saying all the other episodes are available now on their streaming platform! Why would you watch linear over 5 more weeks when you can watch it now? It would be interesting to drill into the digital figures to see how much of the shift is is people actually watching non- or not recently broadcast material and how much is just people time shifting away from an inconvenient / poor time slot. If it’s the latter, then it’s really not that concerning as it’s just the modern version of taping shows onto VHS etc to watch later. The only difference is companies can now measure that practice more accurately. I think in recent years various execs from BBC and ITV publicity stating that they’re chasing the under 35’s may not have helped older peoples perception that a channel may not be for them anymore? The repeats of Heartbeat and LotSW doing so well seem to back up a lack of simple feel good serials in the schedules. The older generation are probably latching onto the older box set content on ITVX for example.

RU-vid and other social media platforms have democratized television. You don’t need to have good connections anymore to make your own programmes and have people watching them. Also it is extremely competitive so there are a lot of new ideas and improvements in a very short time which traditional telly, run by old people who are resistant to changes, can’t really keep up with RU-vid/streaming. There are many RU-vidrs and streamers using professional television-grade equipment with budgets comparable to television productions, which was unimaginable 10, or maybe even 5 years ago. TLDR: Young people are now innovating online, not at television, which is increasingly run by older people less likely to innovate.

TV needs to focus on staying cheap and cost effective for those families who struggle to afford Internet plans. They have to stop investing in trying to put their channels on streaming, they'll never do it as well as Netflix. If they double down on being the cheap alternative with a focus on movies and live events, they will maintain their relevance for another decade or two.

The thing with these new things is that they take off fast at first, but eventually people get tired of it when these big corperations try to gate everything and want to squeeze every penny out of people again. Netflix was great because it pretty much had everything on it. Now it is all spread over all different services costing a fortune if you want to see all your favorite stuff. Until things go back to third parties offering services where these production companies make their stuff available based on royalties or something i think streaming has had it's peak for now. It has to become like how music streaming is done nowdays. All labels offer their music on a third party service. That will be the future, i don't see this segmented market where every studio shows their own stuff existing for to long.

95% of tv channels these days are automated playlists with some adverts sprinkled in. There are even ai generated "channels" on streaming services. This is What I have been saying for ages the BBC and ITV output is boring. Their shows are unimaginative staid and uninteresting. They keep rehashing old shows that were cancelled and brining them back. Today I read they're going to bring back Total Wipe Out completely reformatted. I think there is a lack of imagination in those who come up with ideas for new tv shows. I think they need to cut the deadwood and bring in new talent. I have been tuning into digital tv streaming content I have been watching Paramount Plus Star Trek Strange New World's which I am really enjoying. And I have taken the plunge and subscribed to Disney Plus and I really like the Streaming service and their are pretty good much better than Netflix. Paramount Plus has some excellent shows. I would hate to see linier tv go because I still watch live tv.

I still watch live tv because I like it and have grown up watching TV and would hate to see it go. I'll be honest I very rarely watch the main ITV channel because there is nothing worth watching on that channel I don't watch Emmerdale or Corrie. Other shows have no appeal to me like long lost families, cooking with the stars. Whenever I look at the TV guide for ITV I do so with a sinking heart and think if it hadn't been for Emmerdale, Corrie, Ant and Dec and Simon Cowell I think the ITV channel may well be have been shut down maybe 10 or so years ago. The ITVX app is a little better only just they have movies, TV shows, documentaries. Some shows I've never heard of some old shows on the app. If ITV had put as much effort into making their flagship channel as interesting and watchable as their app then maybe they'll get more viewers. The only ITV channel I watch is ITV2 only for Family Guy and American Dad and occasionally Plebs when it's on. I'll be surprised if the main ITV channel survives to the end of the 2030's the way things are going I doubt it. As I said in my previous comment they need to modernise get rid of the those who have run out of fresh ideas and bring in more people who understand TV what audiences want to watch and make better TV shows. Maybe they should look at how US tv is run. It's about ratings every year. They look at their tv shows see which ones are doing well in the ratings and chop the ones that are failing and make fresh new tv shows then every year around September/October they test their new shows with the audiences and if shows don't get enough ratings then they are pulled from the schedule and replaced. Maybe the channels in the UK should adopt that business model it seems to work in the US it may work in the UK.

BBC is slightly better I watch tv shows on BBC One I watch maybe an hour to and a half of BBC each day so yeah, I watch more BBC shows because they make some really good tv shows. But, after about 8pm which is prime time tv watching for most households I switch channels and watch something on Sky. I do think the BBC needs to bring in fresh new talent and get rid of those who have run out of ideas behind the scenes. The BBC used to have some great comedy shows on like Blackadder, Men Behaving Badly etc. Now I feel their comedy is boring I never saw the appeal of Ghosts I couldn't see what was so amusing about a bunch of Ghosts. I thought Black Ops was fairly decent. Some of the drama on the BBC can be slow and boring. A few years ago they had some fantastic drama on BBC One like Line of Duty, Killing Eve, The Girl Before, and a few others. Dramas on the BBC used to be for me anyway slow and boring but lately they have really caught my attention and I stuck with a few really good drama series. I think the BBC needs to bring live audiences back to their comedy shows I kind of miss that. I do think the BBC needs to do better with their tv shows and channels and like ITV get rid of those who have run out of fresh ideas and bring in fresh new talent with fresh ideas who understand what audiences want to watch on the BBC, have mass market appeal not just to certain audiences but to all audiences. Skytv mostly has American tv shows some I really enjoy some has no appeal to me. They have started making tv shows based in the UK shows like Code 404, Bloods, Brassic and a few others shame Idris Elba is no longer making his comedy series In the long Run I really liked that tv show it appealed to my sense of humour.

For me, TV died AGES ago. I'm talking as far back as the late 2000's (just slightly prior to when we had the digital switchover). At the end of the day it depends on who you are and what sort of content you want to watch, and there's been ABSOLUTELY NOTHING worth my attention on the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and all these other channels. Not back then and still not today. I'm not interested in these silly karaoke talent show contests where people go on stage, do a performance and Simon Cowell says they're crap and then they storm off throwing a strop while the audience laughs and boos at them... I've over the many years have been more of a fan of Japanese entertainment like Tokusatsu and Anime, and the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 have not been the place to watch this kind of stuff. I would mostly watch Tokusatsu and Anime on physical media such as VHS and DVD, which I still like to collect today, and while I don't care much about broadcast TV, I still hope physical media won't go away ever. But one thing I wish traditional TV would do is act as a little preview for these shows so that we could watch the show on TV, decide if we like it and buy it on DVD later. Most Anime is released on DVD and Blu Ray without ever being broadcast on TV so that people could watch it and decide if they would later like to buy the show on DVD. There are alternatives though. And MTV is definitely a product of it's time. MTV used to be a really cool 24 hour music channel, but nowadays and for the past 2 decades they've been airing nothing but crap and all the music videos are on RU-vid now (well most of them at least, some of them are probably lost media). I do miss VJs like Ray Cokes introduce the music videos and introduce us to new songs and artists... then again Ray Cokes is still doing stuff today, just not on MTV anymore. The only aspect of TV I'm interested in nowadays is it's history (which is also why I'm subscribed to Adam Martyn). Things like the TV channel idents, the TV commercials it used to show in the 80's and 90's, the nostalgia and excitement of watching Saturday morning cartoon blocks like TV Mayhem, watching South Park on Friday nights... Things like that.

Linear television and radio does seem to be on its way out with the public. There seems to be a push toward a paywall/pay per view system for media consumption. RU-vid is heading that way. The BBC could head that way post licence fee. ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are eyeing up that direction and the radio networks by Global and Bauer are dipping their toe in paywalling radio content while the BBC seems to be treating FM and DAB as legacy platforms and going all in with Sounds. The only way moving to such a funding mechanism is through the Internet and apps. People might begrudge the increases in subscription fees but it seems people are more than happy to pay for content and will pay for convenience. It's why VHS and PVR's were popular. Streaming removed the last hurdle in you forgetting to record the programme you wanted to timeshift. Also bear in mind that the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Disney, Spotify et al can draw funding worldwide for content which the UK broadcasters can't compete with. The mobile phone networks are eyeing up the frequencies used for broadcasting and can easily outbid the broadcasters for those frequencies and Government will sell the spectrum to the highest bidder.

Currently this only is for the United Kingdom, but for those (like me) elsewhere is this also going to be the case? Companies have started to place their bets on their digital services (i.e., streaming platforms) so it may seem like that is the case.
@KaleunMaender77
@KaleunMaender77 Год назад
This is going to be the case everywhere. Traditional TV will have nothing to offer other than live news and current affairs, and then live sport. Even so, everything you find on free-to-air TV either is available on pay TV and streaming services (and to varying degrees of service), or comes from pay TV and (I suspect) is no longer viable to remain on pay TV because of either fewer subscribers to the whole range of channels on pay TV (like Sky or Foxtel) or because (once again) even satellite and cable pay TV is giving way to streaming services (and Foxtel in Australia has begun capitalising on certain aspects of this with Binge for regular genres of TV and Kayo for sports). Take Australia for instance. We have TVSN. We have NITV. We have NICKELODEON (on free-to-air as of this Tuesday just gone). All three came from pay TV (most likely origin, I assume, is Foxtel). All three are now available free-to-air, by name and by content. That's starting to seem a bit cool and grand to my mind. I have this idea in my head that free-to-air may look like Foxtel or Sky, meaning most (if not all) of the channels that have ever been available on Foxtel may end up being broadcast terrestrially. However, I am going to burst this bubble and suggest that the terrestrial venture is going to have to wrap up at some point, and it will not be feasible to continue on with terrestrial broadcasting, and everything will move onto streaming. It's almost as if there was no point to getting rid of the analog signal anyways because the digital(-only) era is not going to last even half as long as the analog(-only) era did. What's almost certainly accelerating the move to streaming media is the amount of trashy TV available on free-to-air. No one really wants to watch a bunch of tossers on an island pretending they're into one another for anything deeper than the skin (and possibly genetalia). No one really wants to watch made-up drama for the sake of drama between two random unknowns from off the street. And everything else is just nowhere near as interesting to watch as anything in RU-vid or Netflix or any other of these streaming platforms. To make matters even more frustrating, I find that on the streaming platforms for two of the commercial networks in Australia, there are channels available to watch live and free which I thought would never happen (that is, they're exclusively available on the streaming platforms). One surprise of mine was that Bloomberg Television is available through 7plus, while MTV's reality line-up is available through 10play. I'm not going to read any deeper into the wherefores of the arrangement; suffice to say, it is miraculous to a grand degree that the streaming services of two commercial free-to-air networks are streaming this content online and so openly (once one reconciles with the fact that one needs to log into the system, which means creating a profile for each of the streaming services). In essence, everything is going onto the internet, and everything is going to be available only on the internet. If traditional TV has any chance of surviving in any capacity, the networks need to re-evaluate the approach to terrestrial television broadcasting and essentially overhaul EVERYTHING. They'll need to conjure up substantial reasons for keeping traditional TV available and afloat. Beyond news and current affairs, there's very little that could be still produced for terrestrial television that people of the near future would want to watch. And just about anything that anyone could ever want to watch, whether live or not, is on the internet. In ten years' time, over 75-80% of people with a TV will be (almost, if not totally) exclusively watching content on the internet. The end.
@timgoodwin4424
@timgoodwin4424 Год назад
I am sad about this news but can understand as I feel that many of the TV channels these days seem like lost causes. Christmas is the best example of how traditional media is being outgunned by streaming as before you had big TV events like big sitcoms or shows whereas now you have the same or similar content to every other day and no specials unless it is Mrs Browns, whereas as there is content overload, I have more time to play catch up on what I missed during the year on Amazon or Netflix. Also some of the channels have lost their way as I read an article about how ITV has become tired as where CITV was back in the day is now bombarded with the same quiz shows on repeat that they might as well be Challenge TV and also they have the same programmes as 10 or 15 years ago on prime time which seem to have lost their way or gone stale. Sadly I am more drawn to Netflix or Crunchyroll as it worked more around my new lifestyle whereas the linear stations don't unless it is Iplayer, all4 or ITV X
