I have a very strong opinion on this series. It's propaganda at its worst that simply didn't age well. I really don't understand how anyone considers this as relatable. For starters, the story attempts to use an outdated theme of the only job a new immigrant can find in Canada are dishwashers. While this was largely true for the 1970s, as the earlier immigrants were poor and uneducated, the paradigm has largely shift when the 90s rolled around. Even the early immigrants were given lots of opportunities to succeed. Take Linda Chung's parents. During an interview, she mentioned that her parents were precisely the type of describe above, but was impressed how they were able to save up and purchase multiple houses in Vancouver. Does that sound like somebody who regrets coming to Canada to become second class citizens? 李司棋 mentioned her restaurant work as part time only, and her take home after taxes is super low. Really? There is so much wrong with that, I don't even know where to begin, am I'm sure if Linda Chung's parents saw the series, they might scream WTF. The series describes 江欣燕/雷宇揚 house being in the $400k, and the house he showed 夏雨 at $800k. It's about nonsensical as it gets. The story mentioned the interest rate during 1990 to be around 13%. If you put down 20% down-payment,雷宇揚 monthly payment would be around $3500 and 4000sqft house would be over $7000. Even today, $7000 per month on just your mortgage is an eye watering amount, nevermind 1990. The average house price is the GTA was only around $250K in 1990, and prices dropped throughout the 90s, yet 雷宇揚 make it sound like anything below $400K would be located in Iqualiut and would disintegrate when it rains. Reality is, the 4000sqft house depicted would have been located in Scarborough or Markham/Richmond Hill and would reasonably cost $350-400k tops in 1990, while 雷宇揚 house in Scarborough would the $200k give or take. The house 夏雨 eventually bought, would be a relatively new built house in Markham, well under $200K. If TVB were actually honest, how many people would abandon their couple hundred feet coffins in Hong Kong and apply for immigration immediately? The house problems 夏雨 experienced is also divorced from reality. I know people who lived in houses that are over 100 years old in Toronto who don't have 1/2 the house trouble. Simply put, old houses in Toronto were built to withstand the test of time, and the newer neighborhoods are nowhere close to needing that kind of repair. By the 90s, the group of immigrants from Hong Kong were made up primarily of people who were far more educated, and far more wealthy to the point local residents were highly critical and resentful of how they were flaunting their wealth. The story describes 夏雨 as poverty case, but reality was, if he delayed his immigration by only a couple of years, having an 1800sqft apartment and a factory valued at $2.5M HKD in HK in 1990, he would be looking at house on Post Rd, nevermind struggling to get by. For those who aren't from Toronto, visit Markham and take a scenic tour. You'll see immediately how this series aged.
