I'm an old guy that recently became interested in a TW200 and found your videos, but what makes your videos really interesting is not the bike, not even the terrain and vistas... what really makes your videos interesting is you kid, you're a special kind of guy! Keep having fun, keep up the good work, and I'll keep coming back for more!

Always enjoy these videos man! I will say that part of the reason those particular air mattresses got cold is because there is little to no actual insulation inside of them. There ARE 3" air mattresses from companies like Exped, REI and Big Agnes that ARE warm because they have insulation inside of the air baffles. Cheap mattresses are cold because they don't have insulation in them, that's also why they're cheap lol If you're looking for more ways to stay insulated from the ground if you don't use a cot, you can purchase a closed cell foam pad to lay under your insulated air mattress and that helps a lot! Even a thick yoga matt under your air mattress will help insulate you from the cold of the ground, that's what people do when they go snow camping! 👌

catalytic hand warmers work well for this application, a giant sized peacock hand warmer runs off of camp fuel and can last about 2 days w/o needing to be refueled so i like stuffing them into my sleeping bag or placing them up my sleeves when riding. For cold weather riding i use hotwired heated vest to keep my core warm and tusk heated hand grips for my hands, this combo works quite well. One thing about the tusk heated hand grips is that the wire on the throttle side can work it's way out thus breaking the electrical connection, so if you install them put some hot glue down around the area the wire enters the grip!
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 3 года назад
nice, are those like the the zippo ones? that's pretty cool, I just picked up a mini heater that runs off the fuel canisters, cool, I can't wait to get some heated grips on. yeah that's what my friend said too for those kind of heated grips, I think he used a zip tie though

@TDubsKid - As a Michigan native, it's pretty normal for us to camp at around or below freezing temps and you have some good tips. Here are some of mine - - Not using an air mattress is super important if it's even a little cold. Those suck all the warmth out of you. I'd recommend either a closed cell foam pad or a self inflating pad. Insulated air pads are okay, but they can puncture easily, especially inside bike luggage, and then you're going to have a very very cold night. - A sleeping bag liner can add a lot of warmth, I'd say easily 5-10 degrees of comfort. I recommend one of the Sea-To-Summit ones. It also keeps your sleeping bad cleaner, so you don't have to wash it as often. - Handlebar mitts are awesome. I use the Hippo Hands ones and with some grip heaters I can ride with summer gloves on all winter long. - Heated gear is nice, but always always have a backup. When I ride, even with a heated jacket, I'll always bring a puffy down jacket with me. It weighs like 4oz and packs down slightly larger than a soda can, but can literally be a lifesaver. I'd think this would be especially important for you, being in the mountains, where you can easily get stranded due to an unexpected weather situation.
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 3 года назад
nice! i'm fairly new to winter camping still have a long ways to go. thanks for the tips! ill probably use an insulated air mattress to start. it wills stay puncture free in my big bag that goes on the tail, ill just surround it with non pokey stuff. I do want to get one of those too. nice, I can't wait to get those, ill probably go with the obr ones though. oh for sure I had a cheap one of those, with me just in case. true that, thanks

@@TDubsKid Another general cold weather "hack" - keep some cookies around to chomp on if you get cold at night. Might sound silly, but if you're hungry you will feel like you're freezing, even when it's not actually that cold out. So eating high energy food and being hydrated (not by alcohol) is really important - foods with fats, sugars, lots of calories. Your body will release/generate heat during digestions and warm your core... and when your core is warm, your body opens up the blood flow to your hands and feet, and those will stay warm as well. So yeah, bear permitting, cookies or some pieces of candy (or a high sugar granola bar) in your tent ;)

The hand warmers are air activated, when you put them in your shoes you constrict the air flow to them that’s why they cool down so quickly, if you don’t use them for the whole time of hours of what it says on the package just put them in a zip lock bag and get all the air out of it and then you can reuse them till they expire.....hey did you loose your remote for instant camp set up lol ? The coldest I have ridden my motorcycle was 12 degrees and I had an hour commute and I had good clothing and winter riding gloves but by the time I exited the interstate almost home I stopped and pulled over to the side because I couldn’t feel my hands, when I started warming them it was extremely painful to where I won’t do that again, heated grips are the way to go, you need the heat on the palms of your hands

One thing I do that helps and is great for overnight trips because it doesn’t require any recharging is use a zippo handwarmer and place it in my chest shirt pocket of my base layer, runs for 12 hours and after it’s out of fuel you can immediately refill it and continue on. Obviously you have to bring fuel but the little 4oz bottle of ronson fuel last a week so it’s no big deal
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 3 года назад
oh nice, those are pretty cool, I have an electric version of those haha it does pretty good not quite that long though. yeah fuel is pretty efficient, have you looked at diesel heaters? too big to bring on the Tdub but super cool and cheap, crazy efficient. would be perfect for a camper van

Great video! I can tell you wool is the way to go. For sleeping warm put a wool blanket on top of your sleeping pad under your bag, you won't believe how warm you'll be. Also sleeping in clothes will make you sweat and then you'll get cold. Sleeping in your underwear with a light weight bag liner is better so you can regulate your body temp. Wearing a fleece cap will keep your head warm. Make sure to not breathe into your sleeping bag it will cause moisture to build up inside it and you will definitely get cold then. Years of sleeping in the mountains during the winter have taught me these things.

Suggestion: a cheap and light weight piece of gear to add to you sleep system. A folding accordion style relflective car window shield to keep the heat out of you car. You can cut it to fit your own size and place it under your sleeping bag. Some of them have a reflective on both sides with a small air bubble layer in the middle. It is a great insulator and will reflect your own body heat back up to you.

the newer TW200 have a much better stator than the older ones, also if you replace all the normal bulbs with led's you free up a bunch of wattage, I have a power supply so I can test exactly how much wattage everything is taking when I make the video also the stators on these bikes don't have as much output when at idle, they do much better when going faster, also you would want a volt meter to see if your dropping too much voltage

Kinda digging the TW200. I just purchased 4 acres and there's some cool areas to ride behind the area I'm building a house. I've mostly ridden touring bikes for the last 20 years.. and haven't really done any off-road riding since I was in my 20s (I'm 50 now). I do go mountain biking occasionally on an e-bike.. but I'm thinking about picking up one of these TWs for some trail riding. I enjoyed your video... cheers.

I like using the hot hand things to preheat my sleeping bag in the winter. Even if they aren't super warm, just having some positive temperature in the bag with you really helps your body maintain heat. The heated gloves look like an absolute life saver on long rides in cold weather. I did a couple hundred miles in sub-30 temperatures on my KLR last week, and my 3 season gloves were clearly not up to the task.
@TDubsKid

that's a good idea, they also sell bigger body warmer versions. yeah they are great, put them to the test last night coming home from the mountains at 1am, they did much better than my other winter gloves, finger tips still got pretty cold near the end when I was almost home, but still much much better than usual

The socks I use are Heat Lockers and Polar Extreme they work very well. I have heated socks for trips but they are 12 volt, and are powered by the bike. It has taken me years to accumulate it, but I have heated everything finally. If I had it to do over I think battery powered heated gear is the war to go. It is just less cumbersome. The only issue that caught me off guard was one time camping, at a bout 11'000 feet, and on the last night it was 30 degrees with high winds, I was fine in my tent, but the wind chill cracked the tips of some of my fingers as I was packing up to leave. Aside from that it was the best motorcycle camping trip I have ever been on.

I've recently purchased some heated gear. Socks (similar to yours), heated glove liners, and a vest. I live in Mongolia which is much colder and drier than Colorado but also sunny. Daytime highs are -10C to -15C and nights are -30C to -40C. So I limit my rides to mid to late afternoon when it's warmest. The heated socks work well under motocross boots. I'm trying the heated glove liners soon motocross gloves over the top. The wind is cut completely with some home made handlebar muffs. I've yet to try them much because my bike fell on my ankle and sort of injured it. So I'll try them soon. I ride a Surron Storm Bee and a Honda Transalp mostly off-road. I'm thinking of trading/selling the Honda Transalp for a TW200 because it's just too heavy and cumbersome for serious off-road. It's also the bike that fell on my ankle. It's very hard to lift up alone which sucks since I like to ride solo. It's probably 180kg compared to the TW200's 125kg. Is the TW200 easy to pickup when you've fallen?
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 2 года назад
very nice! definitely worth it if you live in a cold climate. wow, that's crazy cold! it can get gold here too but it usually warms back up. sounds like it's all working great! @martinfoster5163

@@TDubsKid Thanks for the reply. I used pretty standard home improvement materials for the handlebar muffs. It's mylar backed foam of about 10-12mm thickness. I cut patterns out of cardboard first for ergonomics tests. Then used the cardboard as templates for the foam. Then I duct tape them together and used 2 sided tape to attach them to the brush guards. The mylar faces inwards. They are pretty ugly which doesn't bother me too much. However, if I like them enough, I can always sew some nylon and/or leather covers to make them pretty. Damn, I should really make a video. Price is pennies because I had some mylar foam left over from a home improvement project. Compare that to what top of the line handlebar muffs cost - about $150 and mine are warmer.

Awesome stuff, again. And congrats to TDubsMom! This vid was quite a bit more immersive to watch thanks to your temperature info, and the fact that it's winter makes it more exciting and dangerous. How far/ long did you ride? How much fuel did you burn? Keep it up! Seems November in Colorado is about as cold as here in Stockholm/Sweden. Though we have slightly milder climate due to the gulfstream, I've barned my KLX230 till spring, mostly due to the salt they spread on the roads here, it eats metal. About all those battery powered heating-clothes, must be a hassle every time, not to mention the fact that batteries get bad over time. Kind of makes such items only good for camping half an hour from home. I'd personally trust a campfire more, that's if there's dry wood around and no rain. I love those sick little details you squeeze in, and when you make coffee and eat those "pop tarts" (?). I looked it up and it's sweet, like pastries? You should save sweets for emergencies, some bread with salami (or bacon) and cheese for breakfast is better if you want to keep warm longer, and ofcourse hot chocolate. Man I'd eat myself to death going motocamping. When they'd find me they'd shake their heads; ".. this wasn't a wild animal, he ate himself to death."
@TDubsKid
@TDubsKid 3 года назад
Hey, thanks! Yeah, I could see the low temp making it a bit more interesting to watch. Maybe about 35 -40 miles from home, so not super far. The temps fluctuate like crazy here, very bipolar. Not a bad idea; salt is nasty stuff. They use magnesium chloride on the roads here, so not as bad. I would have liked to have a campfire, but there was a fire ban. I got an actual heater now that runs on those butane canisters, so that should work well. Haha, pretty much what pop tarts are. Yeah, fat is good for staying warm, just like the Eskimos. bahahahaha 😂
