Jammed CD changer? No problem! Let's get it playing some jams again! Need to take the mechanism apart even further? Look here: • TWB #17 | Further Dism... Wanna help support this channel? / theworkbench www.paypal.me/...
This is how instructional videos should be. Very patient, knows what he is talking about and ... no head banging music! Thanks so much for this! Now, off to my workbench and hopefully I can fix my CD stacker, which luckily is the same type. John.
That loader mechanism is such a beautiful contraption it should be a crime to hide it away in a closed metal box! More gadgets need clear acrylic cases :)
8 years late 😂 back in the day I had an 8 disc changer but it was in the trunk’ Having “in dash” was luxury back then’ Fried a used to make fun of me having to get out the car and swap cds in the trunk’ Mid 80s early 90s kids truly had an amazing childhood’ Tech was just getting big it’s just an odd era of time Big white caller ID box dial up internet Calling for a ride by calling collect and when you record your name “It’s me pick me up” 🤣🤣 goodTimes
Professional keyboard warrior here and I'm speechless .... I just subscribed to your channel and I must say that I truly enjoyed your clear tutorial... I have a 2008 Ford F-150 Lariat and it has the same issue... By watching your video I gained the confidence to do it myself and for that a million thanks... You sir deserve 5 👍👍👍👍👍
Wow, IT field tech here. I'm really impressed with your work. Unlike many of the videos posted, you detailed the loader mechanism. I actually have a '03 Bose changer, but I'm trying to see if there was any chance of rotating something manually to get my CD's out. Only my top loaded disc did that so far so I wondered if there was a gear that could control the CD disc level. Looks to me like that's a iffy "yes" only, unpowered it's unlikely to do what I want without removing pieces. I already knew how well calibrated everything was so I was trying to avoid disassembly. I got my answer, thanks again.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Fixed my CD changer on the first try. No more chatter. My wife is ecstatic. Appreciate your hard work and great detail. Thank you again.
Alex, I hardly know where to begin. First of all, great video! Very informative, very professional and thank God no awful background music! Well worth my time to watch it twice. One time straight through. Second time while I was disassembling my unit. I got it apart just fine up until removing the black gear. I could not get the split ring off to save my soul. Probably needed a sharper removal tool. So I could not perform all the steps as described in the video. I did manage to remove 6 of my favorite CD’s and get the unit re-assembled without any parts left over. Alas, it did not work any better when l was finished than it did before l started. BUT . . . I did mange to retrieve my CD’s. So . . . I went to your Patreon page. I would be glad to make a contribution to your future endeavors but it appears that a subscription is the only way to do so. People who do what you do should be encouraged. I would make a contribution but l am not ready for any long-term commitments. If you have not already done so, I would encourage you to get a website and start taking in work for hire. I would gladly pay to ship my unit to you, have you perform the work and send me back a unit that functions like the one in your video. Keep up the good work.
Phenomenal video. I disconnected both batteries to my 2008 F350 diesel to clean the battery terminals. Discovered upon reconnecting power that the 6 disk CD player (that had worked flawlessly up to that point) was no longer working. Your video allowed me to pull the CD player out of the radio, take off the sides, remove the 6 CDs that were already loaded, and re-set the entire system. Thank you for the great video and the assistance in fixing my truck's radio/CD player!
Thanks for posting this. My 2007 Ford Five Hundred stopped ejecting CD's about a year ago. Now it won't even play the ones it had. That's OK becaue I am pretty tired of them anyway. Armed with this information I believe I will be able to repair my player. I appreciate your instruction. Very well done!
This video really helped me repair a 2007 Ford fusion 6 CD changer with the same symptoms, and it worked flawlessly! Valuable insight with the switch cleanings and a real technicians point of view on everything! Thank you!
Watched the video and followed along while tearing mine apart. My first try didn't work. Second try it worked. When putting on the top piece, pay attention to all the various linkages. After insuring I put the top on correctly everything worked. Video was awesome in helping me. Player now works. Thank you.
My 2007 Ford Fusion had been jammed (without any cds in it) since I bought it last summer. And when I was trying to fix a separate radio display issue I found this video. Followed along and worked perfectly. However, I used CRC 2-26 Lubricant/Cleaner to clean the contacts. Also the big gear at the bottom did not have the same markings as the one in the video, but was able to find the right spot. Thanks a ton!
Absolutely Fantastic step by step instructions! The video was very helpful especially with all the tiny screws and moving parts. We ran into the same problems with the wires as well the alignment of the moving parts. It was very helpful watching how you maneuvered through these problems! Very grateful for your expertise!! Many thanks ❤
Your video is amazing. With the help of your video I was able to repair the deck in my wife's car in under an hour. This has saved me hundreds of dollars. Thanks for doing this!
Thank you for the instructions! I appreciate people like you who spend their valuable time making these tutorials, and this one was great. I did have some problems with synchronization. I aligned with the "S" and put the stack at the position you had in the video, but it still was jammed when plugged back into the car. I then removed the black gear again, plugged in the unit to my car, let it run through its routine, disconnected, reinserted the black gear, and it worked great. The gear set must have stuck somewhere wrong when it originally jammed, and since we aren't rotating those gears with it apart (no power), they stayed in that unsynced spot. Also, I removed the large shiny plate on the inside bottom of the unit since it was warped and adding friction to the giant flat gear that rotates on the bottom. From what I can tell, this isn't necessary. One last thing, I used a DC power supply to operate the motor you removed in the video. I tried turning the gear manually (with the motor out) but it was very hard to move. The power supply showed where the unit was jamming. Thanks again!!
The only reason why I don't necessarily like using power on the motor to rotate the gear is that I've had one strip before, which made it even worse. Good to hear you were able to get yours working though!
This comment helped me a lot. I have the PS-3140K-A in my Suzuki SX4 and the large gear at the bottom has the letters/numbers L, 2, and G. I aligned the gear so the window would show "G" instead of "S". Then I just followed the steps that James did. I'm so happy to get the disc changer back up and running. Thank you both!
@@GriffinU I am glad the steps above helped! Two years later and my problem has returned, probably due to the little switches that were problematic last time. Now mine comes apart again. Hopefully yours is still working or you got a new car.
oh you are a much smarter man than I. Thank you for sharing! Shout out to the creator as well as there was nothing else out there in this capacity. Just bought a 2007 Ford Focus lol was pretty excited that everything was in such good shape. Just had to try filling the CD player all the way up. That running it without the black gear was a smart idea, not sure I would have ever went there. Thanks again.
Excellent video. Mine was jammed because while I was removing the unit from the dash the CD player started to shuffle, and a CD fell out of place. I didn't have to take it as far as this video. With the radio cover removed, I reconnected the radio, and played with the problem CD in between the CD shuffles until it fell back into place. Lucky! If you try this watch your fingers, and select the eject button to get the unit to shuffle if it stops shuffling. I cleaned the switches as well since I was already in there. Cheers, and good luck!
This is a great video Bud! He just get's it! Plus he seems to be very knowledgeable in this field and speaks clearly. He shows how to test switches and Pay attention to what you're doing, be patient, and try it! I'm gonna try and fix my Dodge Ram cd changer after watching this. Thank you
Hey, thanks so much for the informative video! My daughter's boyfriend's Nissan radio was busted, from a mechanism error, and we had to go through this whole process to get all the CDs out. Thank you, again. Appreciate your time and effort. Subscribed!
Very thorough video on the 2008 Ford Edge with a 6 disc player. I have the same model year with a 6 cd changer and it jammed. I just finished putting it back together, will test it out in the morning. I had thought about taking it in to the repair shop, but at today's labor rates, it'd probably cost a fortune. Didn't have any screws left over after the disassembly and reassembly, keeping my fingers crossed.
Just wanted to say thank you for the amazing video. I had a similar issue on my 2008 Mazdaspeed3 6 disk, which is almost identical to this. Works like a charm now and saved me at least $500. Thank You!
Well sir, I have the same radio in my 06 Expedition and the problem with my cd player is that it wouldn't load or eject any cd's I tried to load up. It didn't even recognize that there was a cd in the machine when I manually loaded up a cd so this video helps HUGE!!!! I will see about pulling my cd player out of my radio and doing the same thing you did. Many thanks for a very informative video and you now have a new subscriber.
Thanks for the video. I was able to resurrect the CD player in my mazda following your steps. I even cleaned the switches and saw the same change in resistance. You saved me quite a lot of trouble finding a replacement.
I bought one of these radios (Ford Fusion, Ford F series, E series vans) because they have good sound. I knew the CD would probably be funky. Your video allowed me to renew it. Thanks!
I have a 6 CD changer in my Mazda CX-7 that has been experiencing eject issues, CD errors trying to load for about 3 years now and was at the point where it would no longer play, eject or load. I was ready to replace it and ran across this video. Although my player was different from your video it was close enough that I could follow and fix my changer to as good as it was when I purchased the vehicle New. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
... mmm, you're a kind gentleman, what I like most is the time when the machine started to check loaded CDs also when it toggled between them, it is pretty much tell the story of our era. It is so fascinating scene, thanks.
Excellent video. My F150 CD player was cycling 6 times making annoying sounds then after about a minute displayed CD Error. Every time I turned the ignition on, the same irritating cycle occurred. I followed the step by step instructions in this video. My computer was right next to where I was working, hit rewind and play several times. There wasn't any CDs in my player however it was out of synchronization. I must say I had quite a time getting the CD slots in the correct place and the "S" in the window. Bottom line the player is back together and working properly for the cost of a can of contact cleaner. Thank you Workbench!!! Oh yes and thanks to my wife for her assistance, it took four hands to do some of stuff the guy in the video did with two hands.
Thank you so much! you saved my 6 cd changer! I found it was hard to take the lid off because those screws are so small and so tight, so i just tried my best to follow your step. I took out all the cds and cleaned all the sensors. It back to life again. one thing I notice that there is nothing written on my big gear, like 1,2 or letter S. and the 6 cd changer I got is from a 2009 murano
Your instructions are very helpful. I just wanted to take my radio apart to remove the CDs and put it back together so it works for the radio and the rear dvd. Cd player still doesn't work but i have the Cd's and everything else works. I only had one extra screw when I was finished.
Thanks much for taking the time to post and share your knowledge with this very informative video. I watched it, followed your directions and now my cd player is working again! My large gear had a G on it not an S, and I also had some troubles when I put it back together, It would not load a CD but then would eject it and give a CD error. Discovered that when I put the top on the little slider that controls the door that opens the CD was on the wrong side of the top piece causing a bit of a bind. Thanks again!
really good tutorial until I bleed my self up wide open at about 11min 30, after that I just went to destroy mode but I managed to recovered all by cd. You did it better than me. play it safe!
This video was a BIG help- my CD player stopped working after i got a jump start last winter, and it was acting up ever since. I was able to get it working again...many thanks!!!
Mine didn't have the stuck cd's, but I sprayed the connectors that you did, and when I first put it back in my car it still acted up at first as I don't have the ability to bench test, but after a minuet it asked for a disk and I said "All Right!", now it works fine. Thanks for the great instructions.
Thanks the time couldn't be better my six changer CD player my Subaru trashed out a couple of weeks ago and you gave me a good informative video of how to get into it and fix it I don't know which is harder to getting it out of the car or working on the bench but we'll figure it out thank you very much have a great day
I was repairing this along with your tutorial step by step, i lack some tool, and i stopped when i realized its missing the lift mechanism, so i guess the best for me will be to get a 2nd hand magazine and replace it. amazing video tough!
Do you ever work on other people's CD players? I have the same one that you are working on here and a CD has been stuck in there for years, rendering it inoperable. I get "Load Error" and "Eject Error". The menu button does not cycle through all of positions it should, like speed volume, bass, treble, etc. There is only one place in Tucson that I can take the unit to who will get the CD out but I'm almost positive that they won't do the thorough quality job that you do. I would worry about the same thing happening again. I don't think that I could do this by myself - I'm too old and it's too complicated. I would lose all of the screws and break it more than it is already. This was one of the best videos I've ever seen. If you would take the work, I could ship it to you for repair. You tell me how much it will cost. I would really appreciate an answer from you-yea or ney. Thank you.
great video long and educational and doesn't just stop at getting the discs out, cleans switches, and does a walk through on reassembly i have this exact unit and i messed it up or the switches were bad like shown here and im going to use the vid to help guide me take it apart.
Great video, but poor ability on my end. I have found myself unable to move the disk into the "S" slot and the sound returns upon plugging the CD player back into the radio. I honestly just tried to fix it to save myself from the annoying sound it makes as it tries to fix itself every time I turn the car on. *QUESTION: Could it hurt my vehicle/radio if I were to plug back in the radio and leave out the disk player part indefinitely? The rest of the unit seems to work fine this way, but I'm not experienced in electronics and am paranoid it may fry something if I don't. I am fine without having a CD player to save me the cost of a new unit, but not if harm can ensue. Thank you to all in advance!
thanks a lot for the tutorial, I did the same process with my clarion 6 cd changer CLCC05 mounted in a Suzuki Grand Vitara (same changer mecanism) and it works. Thank you!
Hello The Workbench, hope you're doing well today. I was just wondering, I have the exact same radio Shaker 500 but I can't figure out how to power it up in my electronics workbench. I figured this radio is 12V and probably only need less than 1.5amp from a power supply to power it up... that's my guess. Now the questions is, what connectors did you use to power up the CD Changer to begin testing the device. Also, wanted to congratulate you on such a detailed and well made video that has all the descriptions needed to understand the job, and also, great camera angle and focus to see exactly what you were doing. I am definitely going to follow in your footsteps to learn from you. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks for posting this. I appreciate seeing how to get out some stuck discs. This makes me think simpler is better--maybe I'll put in a single CD player rather than continuing to fiddle with the 6 CD player...
Try an easy way before trying to get into the assembly/ Take a disc. wrap very strong sticky tape. wrap around one end of the disc, and twist the tape so that the sticky side is up. hold the tape with your thumb. Insert a bit into the slot and push down, until you feel it is on the stuck disc. Push on the eject button and at the same time pull the disc you are pressing down slowly. This works because I did this Yesterday. If this doesn't work try a couple of times before trying to get into any complicated procedures. Good luck, Keep well, Keep smiling.
Thanks for posting this. A great explanation of the inner workings in these units! I just picked up an 02 Ford Explorer and the deck says its full when I tried to insert a CD. Hopefully it has six good rock CD's in it and not any rap music! The Deoxit is on hand as I use it when refurbishing vintage tuners and amps.
I believe you're correct. No hexagonal hole on either side of this gear. It may vary slightly by design. Mine is from a 2003, but pretty much identicle to the one in your video. When you turn the gear at 11:50 in the video, the white assembly behind the trays and the two white loading fixtures move. Mine does not, so this may be the issue. Just need to know where the gear goes. Thanks for your help!!
Outstanding! This was the exact same problem issue I had with my 2007 Ford F150 CD changer. Now I understand in a way never possible before. Thank you so much.
Great video! I was able to repair our 2008 Fusion CD Changer. It developed a problem (dropped a disk?) when I disconnected the battery to replace. Sounded just like yours at the beginning of your video, went through your procedure and got it going, Thanks!
I just want to thank you for this video, this happened to me when we had our first cold day of the season. Didnt know what went wrong, untill I saw your video. Kudos
Great video and especially the explanations and close-ups. I have a unit in a '02 Honda Accord. Seems to have fewer large moving parts and more worm gears. Still holding CDs - played for a short while but not again since. I suspect sensors but they're not as clearly shown without the big take-apart. I can see it's not same as this one. Thanks!
Thanks a million. Working like a dream though at first I plugged it in outside and the light entering the player made it think it was loaded when it was empty. Pyulled it into the garage and it worked fine.
If anyone wants to see a very funny video of this same process but yours truly doing the work I will make one. it will involve hammers and power tools and def will not come back together and play!
Thank you for this excellent walk through/fix.. As ford (and mazda) is funny that way and this style of changer is used in many years and models. You have fixed my car and my wifes truck. But not only that earned a subscriber. :) thank you you sir!
I too was extremely amazed at how well your video was done! I did every step exactly as you did, following along. I’m absolutely positive that I put my unit back together exactly as you described. Was able to remove one cd from the top slot. However, now upon testing the player reads “ initializing”, but won’t load a cd. Is it possible that I assembled the plastic micro switch cam assembly incorrectly? I read where some units that do this need reprogrammed or reflashed at the dealer? Please respond to my question. Thank you!
Wanted to pass along my thanks and appreciation for the helpful video you provided. I employed it successfully on a 2008 Ford Fusion. While not very knowledgeable on electronics, I found it easy to follow. Could I recommend some caution on removing the ribbon cables, especially the small one? I may have broken the black slide-out connector. But so far it has not proven problematic. My unit did not have the same markings on the big gear but it didn't seem to matter. Also as a senior with poor eyesight, I had trouble seeing the split in the two retainer rings and even more trouble trying to "pick" them off. I found that if I pried up on the black gear and the white switch activator while holding a finger over the post and ring, they would pop off. Again, many kudos.
Your 'continuity', ohms - I would have thought fluctuation due to your (un- steadiness), movement of probes. =\ Dirty Switches, hmm ~ W0W! Impressive job! Never knew of this. Thanks! Don't have one, but Good to Know. You should be Happy - I Am! = ) ~ peace
Thanks for the great helpful footage. Worked a lot. I am in the middle of the job. I believe turned the white wheel a bit a lot while alligining the plates and the reader arm came in between playes. Do you know how to get it back to reset position?
Best video ever, very helpful in trying to fix my wife's cd player in her Ford. However when I took it all apart my issue was not with the contacts being dirty but rather I discovered a broken gear. Specifically the one white gear next to the black gear that you initially remove so that the tray can move freely. I suspect that this too is the reason for several people having issues with this particular cd player. Would you happen to know where I can obtain this particular gear and possibly some new retaining clips? The one clip I took off of the black gear seemed to be somewhat deteriorated. I wonder if this correlated in anyway to the other gear breaking. Also do you know the manufacturer of this particular radio, I believe it to be a Delco, but am not 100% sure. Again great video, it's guys like you that I truly appreciate and the many reasons I am able to fix things or at the very least gain knowledge of how to fix. Thanks!
Most malfunction(s) in devices such as CD players rely on these types of switches and as he said in the video if one or more of those switches don't signal the microprocessor of the mechanical position.... jams occur ... switches inside can sometimes be a real pain to get too as well... and some switches are like the ones on the front panel get dirty too ... they in some cases a little better protected against dust and dirt but still can get dirty ... most times you can pretty well bet if a mechanical issue develops in your CD changer (even single CD units) they have switches that tell the microprocessor the mechanism status as well
This video was great. Unfortunately the motor would not click into place. Tried for an hour to re mount it. Then the wires connected to the motor broke and now I’m in the market for a new CD player
@The Workbench Great and very informative video, thank you. Just wondering if you can tell me what the pin-out is for these radios to be able to bench test it. Thanks in advance, Bob.
You are a very good instructor of the cd technology . I'm guessing it's basically the same for a Nissan pick up 6 disc changer ? Thanks this the best and most informative video iv seen , I appreciate you doing it , so maybe some of us "gifted" people may understand .
Nice video..I was able to get to the point of getting the last cd out..and the little gear you turn by hand froze up..a lever moves forward but the metal separating disc will not compress
SUPER REPAIR VIDEO! Thank you for making this video, I learned a great deal. I looked through all the videos you have on your channel. Now, need to ask if you have further wisdom on how to fix the same type of stereo unit in my 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac V8 4wd truck. The lighted display has never worked since I bought the truck, so I cannot see what channel the radio is tuned to, or which cd is playing. Blank display, ok, it did faintly light up two times when I gave it a good hit above the cd changer on the dashboard. Any direction you can offer is greatly appreciated. Linda/Indy
Sorry for such a delayed reply, but the most common issue with those green VFD displays on the Ford radios is that the SMD resistors in line to power the filaments on the display break at the solder joints. These are located in the faceplate. They're large flat chip resistors. They need to possibly be cleaned and have the solder reflowed and they work fine again. It's possible there *could* be something else going on, but that's the usual problem.
Great video. One suggestion. At the beginning of the video it would be a good idea to list the tools needed. I got all the way through to the point where you need to clean the switches but I didn't have the cleaner.
That is a very good video EXCEPT in my case the arm that moves over to the center of the CD and has the motor and actual CD reader (Laser Arm) is stuck in the engaged position and you don't show me how to move it back to the stowed position out of the center of the player ??? If I could get it out of the center (or the Play position ) of the player I think I could reset everything to make it work .... HELP !!!
